MG 165 and Solo 1000 for minor

I recently loaded some Montana Gold 180gr Hollow Points behind 4.5gr of Solo (OAL 1.185" & Crimp 0.422"). I was hoping to find a sub-minor load for Steel Matches.

I didn't get a chance to chrono it but it is definitely a minor load (I know because I was getting 171PF using 185gr Precision Moly bullets). Nonetheless this wasn't the lightest 40 minor load that I have tried so I need to go back to the loading bench and work on a lighter load. I will probably start at 3.8gr and work from there.

FWIW Accurate recommends the following for Solo 1000 but I have never had good luck matching their velocities.

(The projected velocities they show are for bare lead bullets out of a 4" barrel):

Bullet weight: 165/170 grains

Start load: 4.2 grains (850 – 925 fps)

Maximum load: 4.6 grains (950 – 1050 fps)

I forgot to say that my wife shoots 40 Minor in Production with 180gr Berry's TC bullet over 3.1gr of Solo 1000 with an OAL of 1.135" and a crimp of 0.422". She's making 128PF out of her M&P 40 with this load.

Edited to add:

This is what Accurate recommends for Solo 1000

Bullet weight: 180 grains

Start load: 4.0 grains (825 – 875 fps)

Maximum load: 4.5 grains (900 – 950 fps)

Thanks Cy. I think I'll load a few at 4.0 and work from there. I almost always shoot lead/ moly but I need as little smoke and flash as possible for a night match. Wait a minute! I may have some Berrys 180s! In which case I'll use your wife's load.

I have to admit to being surprised that a load that light will cycle the gun without problems.

This load is so light that I had to go to 13 lb spring to make the gun cycle reliably. I tried putting an 11 lb spring in the gun but the slide would unlock when she shook the pistol.
