Brian Enos's Forums... Maku mozo!

I think I was focused...

Just came back from an IDPA classifier today and had a literal blast. What helped me out the most is I avoided conscious thoughts during a string, and avoided “concentrating”, as Enos' book defines it.

So now that I can think back and try to break down the components my shooting, I realized a couple of things-- I can only remember seeing my target and front sight during strings. I also remember my front sight recoiling when I fire...and not always having the front sight return to the notch (gotta work on that). I don't remember how my two-hand grip formed when I drew from the holster. I don't remember when my trigger finger went to reset during a string. And I don’t think I called my shots—at least I don’t remember if I did. The only glaring exception was when I was transitioning to an adjacent target and the gun discharged before I got a sight picture, leading to a miss that I called. On the bright side, the miss tells me that my finger only comes out to the trigger reset.

I’m hoping I’m using the terms correctly: do you have to be able to remember or recall components of your shooting to be as aware as possible? Does my inability to remember mean I’m too focused?

do you have to be able to remember or recall components of your shooting to be as aware as possible? No. Does my inability to remember mean I'm too focused? No, remembering requires recording (thinking). Your goal is to do what it takes to experince the moment. Do ALL your thinking and remembering during the walk-through. Then just shoot it.
