Krag
I recently "inherited" a rather large supply of WW231 powder and want to work up a Major P.F. .40 load for USPSA matches. I plan to use both 165 and 180 gr. bullets and was wondering if anyone can suggest some starting loads I could try? I shoot a Para 16.40 and up until now I've been using TiteGroup with good results. Many thanks. Edited August 30, 2010 by Krag
Torogi
Good for you. W231 is discontinued now and it was replaced/ renamed to HP-30 by Hodgdon. I load HP-38 to 4.6gr on 180gr Moly Coated Bear Creek bullets, Fed Small Pistol Primers, 1.130" OAL. gives out 168PF out of my 5" Schuemann AET barrel. I load shorter than usual, previous owner had it at W231 5.1gr, 1.180" OAL, 180gr MG JHP, WSPP, 167-170PF out from the same barrel. Good luck! Walküre
I dabbled with W231 in .40 before going to Universal... 5.2gr W231 @ 1.147" OAL with a 180gr MG CMJ was ~935fps (~168PF) out of my TS. Good for you. W231 is discontinued now and it was replaced/ renamed to HP-30 by Hodgdon. And where exactly did this information come from? Direct from Winchester or Hodgdon? Or usual friend-of-a-friend banter / internet rumors? This is particularly hard to believe given that I just received 16# of W231 last week from Powder Valley. Both W231 and HP38 (which are the same) have been out-of-stock at most suppliers for a while, but all indications have been that it's just a batch/seasonal thing - and it's coming back now. NickJ
5" 2011, Scheumann barrel, 180 gr Lazer Cast flat point (which is about 178 gr)- 4.8 231 makes 167pf. 5.0 makes 176. Small rifle primer, 8000 ft altitude, so your results may vary.

blaster113
I've been loading 4.7 gr. of HP38 in once fired Winchester cases, Precision 185 grain moly bullets, CCI small rifle primers, 1.180 OAL for a pf of 168-170 out of an Edge. I also tried 5.0 gr. of HP38 with some Zero 180 gr. JHP's for a pf of about 170; I actually like the recoil impulse better than a comparable Titegroup load. All loads fired at sea level.
