Hornady 185

I have a bunch of Hornady 185 Jacketed XTP's and plenty of Solo 1000 and Clays powder. I am hoping to find a load that will use one of these powders so I can (hopefully) avoid buying other powder. The primary gun for these rounds will be a Para P14 with 5" barrel, non compensated. There will be some use in a Kimber Pro CDP and a standard Springfield govt model. Mostly for steel shoots and for the occasional, local USPSA shoot.

Thanks in advance,

steve

PS I did a search, but didnt find the data I was looking for

I don't have exact data, but both should work just fine based on my experience with 200gr rounds and both powders. You will probably be looking at mid to upper 4.xgr of powder with both with a 1.25ish OAL. My old Solo chart shows 4.6 to 5.1gr with a 185gr Hornady and a min OAL of 1.15. Clays should take less as it's a touch faster burning.

I just loaded up some Zero 185 JHP with 4.3 of clays for steel very soft shooting out of my 5" Springfield. I dont know how rough it would be to make major PF if your trying to, but for steel it seemed fine.

I had a pile of MG, and Zero 185 grain jhps last year, and I decided to use them up.

I ended up over what Hogden says is max load to make 168pf, with Clays, about this time of year, (30-40 degrees) but, when I rechronoed them in August, (80-90 degrees)for our state IDPA match they were up to 180pf.

Ahhh what the heck, I'll bump the thread instead of editing my previous post.

I found a load on handloads.com last night that listed 5.2gr-5.8gr of S1000 under a 185gr JHP. It listed Accurate as the source of the info but I couldn't find anything S1000 related on Accurate's website. I'd suggest starting with SA Friday's advice and work your way up to what ever power factor you are trying to achieve and watch for pressure signs.

I'm going to work up the same load when I get a chance because I got picked the 185gr XTP's for my LNL rebate. I doubt I'll have the extra time or primers any time soon.

Haven;t had a chance to load any yet. But wanted to tell y'all thanks! By the way, they will be used more for general play and steel matches than for any serious competition, so PF is not that critical.

Thanks Again.

Steve
