  1. I don't think it will die. After all, some version of this same discussion rolls around at least a couple of times a year. Not only that, but it seems that (at least locally) about a quarter of the people shooting 3 gun have the kit to shoot heavy/He man. What may end up happening is for there to be a few more matches that are HM specific. Isn't the one out west fairly well attended? Nothing saying it couldn't happen other places, eh?

  2. Go ahead and invent another wheel. The 3gn classification works for 3gn, the uspsa classification works for uspsa, and so forth. There is a substantial number of shooters that participate in major multi-gun events that choose to not be involved in either. If a classification is neccessary it seems that one maintained on universal and overall match results would make more sense. Even if the match was not affiliated with any other organization.

Of course if 3gn or uspsa were to track results from major matches that are not affiliated I suppose using one of their systems could work.

  3. The A-5 is a great SG. I wouldn't consider it for 3-gun though. If one was to screw up and let the bolt close on their thumb it'd be like closing a safe door on it. Much worse than a Benelli. Ask me how I know, LOL

You can sometimes find shorter barrels on gunbroker for not much more than it would cost to cut and choke the original.

Still though, they are better bird guns.

  4. great match, was my first 3 gun match and i came in 10th on the am side. my only wish is that they let like the first, i don't know 10 finishers walk the prize table first. haha i think they should split and let the top finishers walk earlier or have a side prize table for the top.

i stayed around for the pro prize table and open had there own prize table. you could do something like that for the top % of shooters on the am side then do a draw.

other then being a little late, i was very impressed with the match and the staff. many thanks to a job well done. Nice win Mr. Jordan of FNH

If you want to go to the prize table in order of finish, then shoot pro next year. One more stage, one more C note, and order of finish to the PT.

  5. 7.62x39 should be considered major - just sayin

No it should not be major. It is an intermediate cartridge (assault rifle) not a full power cartridge that major was built around (.308)

    Pat

Hold on for just a minute. 7.62x39 is actually .310 or .311, if memory serves (I don't have an AK and don't load this cartridge), so the bullet diameter is larger and the length is shorter (resulting in a lighter bullet).

The real issue is driving the bullet fast enough to make major (320 pf). There are at least a couple of loads that do this (barely).

.30 Gremlin was designed specifically by the AMU for Dan Horner to make major for the USPSA nationals a few years ago. He switched to 300BLK in 2011 (if memory serves) to use the mainline AR parts available (especially in the Army's supply stream). Because he's shooting Tactical, he switched to a 5.56 this year, due to the move away from major/minor scoring.

I think the statement is really tied to whether 7.62x39 should be considered for HEAVY METAL or Heavy Tactical or Heavy Limited. In this case, I agree with Alaska--the divisions are designed around using a true .30 caliber rifle. 7.62x39 doesn't meet this spec. Neither does 300BLK, even tho it uses the same bullet diameter and weights as .308.

    Thresd drift....

IMO major PF for rifle should be at LEAST 360, easy enough to make even out of short RIFLE.

  6. We are pushing hard to make this as headache free as possible. I would bet the farm there are going to be some but they will be small and easily corrected.

Dustin you better come and shoot this match I gotta win that twenty back from last match!

Has anyone ever seen or even heard of a headache free major match?

As a sometimes shooter I prefer to see the envelope pushed with regard to stage design and endure the inconveniences that go with it.

    Best of luck,
