  1. Ok going to stupid mode.. i have the same problem.. can you explain how you are scrubbing the inside of the barrel with the copper chore boy.?? My XD's are getting filled up with lead/molly from these and i have used every chemical known to main to get it but no luck.
  2. Thank you.. And that link is probably where i saw it at when i first started researching!
  3. Im just getting ready to start reloading .223 ammo. My first rifle reloads. I know I read it somewhere but I cant find it now, but at what point do you switch to the large powder bar for the dillon dies? My .223 dillon conversion kit came with the small bar already on the funnel but Im looking at 24 to 26 grains of powder for these rifle reloads. I was expecting the large bar to be on and I figure I need it there but what is the cut off for grains when you move the large bar. 10? 12?
  4. Same deal with me. My first rounds under the Chrono and I had them loaded at 1.260 with 0 problems and good peformance. Loaded up a hundred came back the next day and every other one jammed the gun so hard I had to really put some muscle behind it to get it out. All the marks were along the side of the bullet the flat area before it starts to turn into a cone. Passed the case gauge as well but not my gun. I ended up like I said above and pulled my barrel and keep reducing the final OAL down until I had a good seat. Course I didnt have a Chrono to compare with but shot them with 3.8 clays and didnt see any issues. Seems decent to shoot, but im just starting and mostly shooting offhand. Any that was with the 230 RNF.
  5. Im shooting an XD 45 ACP using that bullet I had to bring mine down to 1.210 to get it to sit nicely in my barrel. Anything longer and I problems, didnt get that nice brass on metal ting when dropping it in. Any Longer OAL for me I could hear the dull thud of the bullet stopping the chambering and rear end of my case sticking up to far and not flush or below flush were it should have been. Going to shoot it that with a 3.8 clays.
  6. Your right, but then again I have variations on my COL Im doing some right now in 40 and Im a tad longer and a tad shorter or longer than my 1.135 not much and not all the time, more like 1.132 and 1.137 or so. Since the brass is longer it would put the bullet in deeper when seated.. if the brass is shorter it should not be seated as deep. Hmmm well then that shoots my theory out the door. I dont know why the variations would be there then that he is having on the final product. And I get a few.. nothign as extreme as his though. but again he is in the .001's range for variances.
  7. Well I ended up loading long on them, or the max OAL of 1.135 based on book spec's. From reading the forums I found out I could go out to 1.155 on my particular pistol. I then I looked at the book having alot of loads with similar bullet weight down at 1.100 even with some round nose. (Im not shooting any wad cutters or hollow points) I also opened up a box of store bought ammo and I found out they have a pretty decent range on their loads as well, those were some personal defense Winchester Ranger's. I'm shooting winchester brass and my variations probably arent any more than (after loaded) 1.132 to 1.137 and Im doing a nice light target load I didnt have any issues with that range. Plus another post I read said variations in brass is normal and as long as it doesnt get out of hand not to worry about it. Now for me, If I was playing with a hotter charge I could probably mike all my brass and get it grouped within .001 for those types of load. I know this doesnt completely answer your question but this is just what I came up with from reading and putting some nubmers together based on alot of mike'ing. Again I a newbie so this is just personal advice.
  8. I'm guessing it's a typo...but you meant .470 crimp, right? Oops yes.. i was loading 40 S&W and 45 ACP. but .470 crimp lol for the 45 acp. Well I was stupid I should have researched more on the chrono, I didnt buy a pact, now that I see the pact keep the epxensive part back on your bench and eyes and ears out there I will be more apt to go at it again. Only thing I was getting ready to buy but I couldnt find the spot to buy more of the plastic pieces. I figured id better get a couple of extras right off the get to !!!
  9. I had a similiar question as well. Check 23 brass random pulled out of the bucket and you will find out its the brass that has variations. Not usually your process. I spent hours trying to figure out what I was screwing up on only to find out the brass had some pretty decent range of OAL's. I will let someone else speak to the OAL and pressure part.. since I am still a newbie.
  10. Went great today. 85 degrees cloudy no wind setup my chrono about 8 feet away from the bench on a video camera stand, first shot broke the straw I was using for the height up from the eyes of the chrono and it looked good. 45 ACP 4" Barrel 3.6 clays at 1.260 OAL and a .470 crimp using 230 Precision RNF 1st shot 685.5 2nd shot 686.2 3rd shot 699.7 4th shot 689.6 Im thinking good stuff nice and tight no much fps range. 5th shot right through the eyes of the chrony. Most expensive 4 rounds I ever shot Well I went ahead and shot the rest of my batches both for the 40 and 45 no pressure issues at all. I suppose Ill have to get another Chrony once I can work myself up to spend the money again.
  11. thanks guys.. It will be interesting to see how it shoots.. going to do that on Friday, took the day off! Well after I run down to buy some more poweder that is.. dropped my bottle and spilled 99% across the floor. almost a full bottle of clays. So after I grab some more.. another magazine or so and whatever else that gunshop has that strikes my fancy it will be interesting to see how my chrono compares. Id like to stick with 4.0 clays.. so if im short on the major ill probably drop the OAL down a bit at a time to see the changes that gets me. Thanks everyone. Im excited about my first rolled ammo
  12. Thanks. I have case gages and everything fit fine. I was going to shoot through the chrono purely for FPS and PF, but your right if I like the stats from one I really need to shoot some for groupage as well.
  13. About the same post I have in the 45 acp section but looking for feedback on my loads. One thing I did notice once I spent all night reading about the horrors of 40 S&W pressure was setback. So there I sat loading up clips and feeding them into my gun. I did notice some slight change in OAL after doing that a couple of times. A cartridge may have changed from 1.135 to 1.134 or even 1.33 after doing that. Do I have set back issues I need to be aware of, or is this something that occurs? I have been reading two different answers to that question, but my crimp doesnt seem excessive so im not sure on the answer thats why im posting. Ok My load creations 3 sets of 10 rounds each for testing at the range. Springfield XDSC 40 S&W Winchester Brass, Winchester small Primer, Bullet 185 Precision RNF OAL 1.135 (I was shooting for it but i range from 1.132 to 1.136 im guessing brass variances?) Crimp .420 (Really tough to measure at the edge I have seen .419 and .421 Could be me trying to hold my fat hands right there on the edge) Powder HP-38 4.0 I kept the same OAL and Crimp and moved my powder to 4.2 and then 4.4 so 10 rounds of each powder weight for testing. Was going to start low Chrono and check pressure before moving onto the next set. Basically can anyone answer my question about the possible set back and then any feedback on my loads. How do those loads look? PS one thing I also noticed is that while my bullets feed well no issues feeding them and manually ejecting them, I am noticing some scratch marks on the Precision bullet itself, random on where its at nothing deep but scratched enough that it did pull a bit of the coating from bullet and I can see lead. I read that XD's really like truncated cones and im wondering if that is my problem with this RNF. Anyone else using Precision have those same issues? Probably be hard to find someone here that is shooting a Sub compact but thougth I would ask. (its my wife's gun, cept I love to shoot it.. fun little gun)
  14. Ok all, I spent the better part of two months reading and researching, and the last two weeks working up my first loads. I feel confident with them but do have a few questions to make sure Im on the right track and I get to keep all of my 10 digits on the hands. Going to post here in the 45 acp section as well as in the 40 S&W section since I developed/copied/read these loads for both calibers. Ok my first question is it normal for the same brand brass (Im using winchester) to have a different OAL's? Im talking once fired brass, cleaned, tumbled and even right after the sizing die some will be right on spec some will be .001 to .004 shorter or longer? When I made my first dummy rounds I thought I was doing something wrong until I measured the brass first. Is this normal and acceptable ranges in loading? I noticed my WWB has some of the same variances so wasnt super concerned but wanted to double check. Ok My load creations 3 sets of 10 rounds each for testing at the range. Springfield XD 45 ACP 4" Winchester Brass, Winchester Large Primer, Bullet 230 Precision RNF OAL 1.260 (I have some variances based on my second paragraph above) Crimp .470 (Measure taken right at the very edge of the brass before the bullet starts) Powder Clays 3.6 I kept the same OAL and Crimp and moved my powder to 3.8 and then 4.0 so 10 rounds of each powder weight for testing. Was going to start low Chrono and check pressure before moving onto the next set. Basically can anyone answer my question about the brass OAL and then any feedback on my loads. How do those loads look?
  15. thanks guys. Shooting the 40 in a XD sub compact 3" barrel. Thanks.. I will also run another search on the forum.
  16. Hi all.. im new to forum.. been lurking for quite some time and purchased all my dillon gear from Brian a week or so ago. I picked up HP-38 for my 40 s&w and I have come up with some loads based on other bullets and weights, but was hoping someone was using close to the same setup so I could streamline my process, its a decent drive to the range. I was going to go with WST based on the forums here and was actually talked out of it at the store by owner.. probably should have stuck with what I had in mind originally but decided to take his advice. I did stay with clays for my 45 at least! Anway I was hoping someone could give me some starting loads with the 185rnf precision bullet and HP38 powder. Im looking at target shooting with this load but suggesstion for both Minor and Major would be welcome. I only bought a pound and would be interestd in other powder choices I see N320 is popular as well.. which if the HP38 can get me by (i love shooting so I will go through it quick!) I would have no problem trying others for my next purchase. Thank you for your time.
