I will add that if you're going to be OCD about something, then make that ensuring you visibly check every case for powder BEFORE you seat the bullet. This will prevent squibs and double loads.

Appreciate it. I'm scanning every one of them as I place the bullet on top. I assume that and the powder check should have me covered.

  2. Well after owning my XL650 for a year I finally loaded 6 batches of 10 rounds each working up in powder grains to get a sense of the differences. Prior to this week I had never shot a reloaded pistol round (9mm). I've got to say I friggin' loved it. My first ten rounds were 3.6gr of Titegroup with 1.125ish OAL. Shooting a 124gr Hornady FMJ-RN out of my Glock 34 I use for USPSA CO. I worked up .1gr on each of the next 5 batches. I shot all through my chronograph and documented the fps of each round.

But I have a question about process for working up loads and getting consistency with OAL...

Like I mentioned I only worked up 10 rounds in a variety of powder grain amount. I have been reading on here (after the fact) and found some suggestions for consistent OAL such as making sure the shellplate isn't too wobbly and making sure each station of the shellplate has a case on it. Both make sense except how do I work up small, consistent batches that way? Am I thinking too small? Should my test batches be more rounds (like 100 or so)? Do I just put the beginning and end rounds aside and shoot them for practice? Or should I recycle the materials for later use? Would love to hear your best practices in this process.

My OAL was all over the place not consistent at all. How consistent should it be? For example if my target is 1.125 what is an acceptable range? What is a preferred? I'm a little OCD when it comes to consistency but I wonder if I'm not being realistic. Hopefully longer runs with a full shellplate will help matters. I think my bell may be too large now as well now that I re-read the manual.

I attached my data in case anyone wants to take a look. Just know that the OAL documented is approximate since it wandered...

    Thanks in advance!

  3. I'm running that exact same Jager Guide Rod. I bought it from SC along with a variety of Wolff Glock Recoil Springs.

Until this week I was running factory 115 Blazer ammo with a 14 lb. spring. I actually purchased 11 lb thru 15 lb springs. I'm planning on dropping down to 11 lb. or 12 lb. as I work in my 124gr. FMJ-RN reloads. I love the lighter spring. First light loads I shot this week along with the 14 lb. spring was amazing.

Here's a link to the .270 springs from SC for those interested...

  4. Thanks to everyone who replied. I posted that and then went out of town with little to no cell reception. I was excited to read through everyone's advice this morning. I will probably follow-up with some specific questions shortly based on your advice. Thanks again and I appreciate your patience. I will pay it forward when I get some experience.

  5. First of all apologies if this is (and it probably is) somewhere on this forum. I'm trying to find as much info as I can.

I'm new here and new to pistol reloading. I just purchased a 650 and plan to start with 9mm until I get the hang of it. This isn't for major/minor or anything in particular. My wife and I shoot steel matches a few times a month.

I'm struggling with finding reloading data that matches what I was hoping to start with. Any help would be appreciated.

I have bought in small quantities so far for experimentation purposes. Here's what I have so far in terms of materials:

    • Powder: Hodgdon HP-38 and Hodgdon Titegroup

    • Primers: CCI Small Pistol Primers

    • Bullets: Hornady 9mm .355 124 gr FMJ RN

    • Brass: I have a small batch of new Hornady brass but mostly mixed brass from years of saving

When I look up data on Hodgdon's site the recipes are very limited... In fact the only bullet they list is 124 gr Berry's Hollow Base Round Nose Thick Plate. Which I could have bought and still can if need be. I've reloaded shotshell for a decade or so but I have never strayed from the manufactures exact recipes.

    So...

Can I use those starting loads to begin?

Is there recipe data online that covers a wider range of bullets, powders, primers, etc.?

Which reloading book/bible would you recommend? Is one better than the others?

Sorry for the rambling. Trying to get started but not afraid to take it slow. Want to make sure I'm doing things the right way.

  6. Hi all, I just joined as I'm looking to learn from you all regarding reloading - specifically handgun and maybe rifle later. I just purchased a Dillon 650 - won't arrive until the end of the week. I have been reloading shotshell for about 5 years  with a Hornady/Pacific 366. Can't wait to get the Dillon setup and running smooth. Would appreciate any initial thoughts if you care to share... Thanks, Tom
