People run extended firing pins because they run light main springs. In their search for low DA numbers the suffer ignition problems and running an extended firing pin is part of dealing with these issues.

    Thanks, that makes sense.

If you have a 16lb main spring and an extended firing pin and you're not lighting them off 100% it isn't the gun that is the issue, it is the ammo.

CGW says to never run more than a 13# hammer spring with their extended firing pin. So that's what I tried. The 16# spring was used with the stock pin.

  2. I have been using SRP's in 9mm for a few months. All Federals, normal ones and gold medal. Work fine with my S2 Orange. Stock firing pin, 10lb CGW recoil spring and the strongest of the 3 hammer springs that it came with (16lb, I believe). Totally reliable. So I found some more SRP's the other day at Bass Pro, Win SMRLP, and bought 2000 of them. They say on the box specifically for 5.56 so I did some research on them before buying and read a review from a person that said they worked great in his 9mm handgun. Well, they didn't work in my S2 or P229. Some would go bang, some only after repeated hammer strikes, some not at all.

Figured it was time for the CGW extended firing pin. They advertise that if you use it with the blue 13# hammer spring, it'll ignite "even the hardest primers". Got that in today, installed it, and no change in performance. That was disappointing. Called CGW and talked to one of the smiths to confirm I had the correct setup for the hardest hit. He'd never heard of this issue before, but I think these are not common primers.

I'm pretty sure I can get rid of them at my local range, but wondering if I should send the extended firing pin back or keep it. So my question is, why do people use it? My S2 lights SR primers with the stock spring very reliably, so having trouble understanding their value.

So, Red Hill says they don't do thumbrest holsters anymore. I lucked out and got one right before they stopped. It works great. When the new Production rules came out, I jumped in and bought a new holster for a weapon mounted light (WML). I was resigned to not being able to use my Eemann-Tech slide release/thumb rest. Surprise! It works just fine. I don't know if all of their holsters would fit the thumbrest, but the CZ SP 01 decocker with WML one does.

Thanks much for the info. But to be clear, you used that SP 01 holster for a Shadow 2? And which holster line was that in at Redhill? I couldn't find a WML option.

  4. Loving my Eemann-Tech slide release/thumb rest, but it won't fit in my blade tech holster. Does not look like it could modified to accept it since I would need to cut into the hinge to make room for it. Just wondering if anyone knows of a holster option that may work for this setup.

With regards to springs, CZ USA needs to get there act together and be consistent on what they tell their customers asking for info.

The info I posted above is very recent, and it may be different for non-orange variants.

But I do find it ridiculous that the springs are not labeled in anyway and the info on what they actually are is so hard to get. It's nice they include them, but it is of dubious value when you don't know what they are rated at.

I wish all the extra springs in the box were labeled as it came with a good handful but I don't know what any of them are or how to identify them without a spring tester.

I bugged CZ USA quite a bit about the extra springs when I got my S2O late last year. Here's what they finally found out for me. This refers to the extra springs:

13 and 11 lbs recoil and 16 and 13 main. Stronger in always the longer one.

Do you notice any accuracy difference between the two?

Not enough rounds through the CGW slide to say for sure yet, and still tweaking the SRO a bit. But I was running 15 rounds through a silver dollar sized hole from 10 yards with it yesterday, so I think I'm going to be happy with it.

  8. Just thought this was interesting. I have the S2O, but could not bring myself to have it cut for an optic. So I bought a new S2 slide and sent it off to CGW for an optic cut and their barrel bushing. When I got it back recently, the barrel was a bit difficult to insert/remove. Doable, but I have to apply a little force through the ejection port to get it out. As a side question for anyone that has had the CGW bushing installed, is it normal to have to force it a little?

I've shot it a couple of times now and decided to try the stock S2O barrel (polished barrel) when I was cleaning it last night, just to test the fit. It slips into place with the CGW bushing easier than the S2 barrel (black barrel). I was a little surprised by that. Maybe it's the black coating on the S2 barrel? Both barrels lock up tight in either slide. And there is no detectable slop in the barrel/bushing of either. The S2O barrel has a few thousand rounds through it, so that might be part of it as well.

I have not shot the S2O barrel in the S2 slide yet, but will soon. I'm sure it'll work well, but curious if it will impact accuracy (which I know is a hard thing to fairly judge w/o a rest, etc).

It’s similar and will most likely fit since he’s indeed looking for the Shadow 2 (S2) Orange part 😆. It’s the same gun model, S2 Orange and Shadow 2 Orange.

He said Accu Shadow bushing in his first post. I kind of wondered, though. I'm not real familiar with the Accu model, but I thought it rotated the other way.

How did it become "illegal" in production by a CGW bushing?  No one can tell if the bushing is stock or aftermarket so??  Unless of course you tell the R/O checking your firearm 😏

You obviously know how it becomes illegal, given the quote above. You can probably get away with it at some level, but that does not mean it's legal.

What about a regular Shadow2, but done over by Cajun Gunworks vs a stock orange?  I've been considering both...  Thoughts there?

I doubt anyone would find a difference as far as accuracy. But then you have questions of value, usage, etc. If you have CGW put a barrel bushing in, for example, the gun become illegal for production in some cases. Where the orange is legal because the upgraded bushing is stock on the gun. And by the time you buy an S2, spend the money, time and shipping on the CGW upgrades, are you really money ahead?

The local Cabela's has a line an hour before they open every day of the same people that buy up what they can.

Yeah, that's true. Pretty much the same guys are the first few in line. And the supply varies a lot. Some days, nothing, some days (like today) very little and some days tons of it.

    Where?

9 mm ammo is 55 - 60 cents a round anywhere you look.

Bass Pro, Cabelas, Academy Sports. I've scored 1000's of 115gr range 9mm from them in the last 3 weeks for 35-40 cents a round. CCI SP primers for $38 per 1000.

I use this same method with the hundo.  In addition, I use a bitf pressure when checking the primer seating.  This will make any non-passing round actually get stuck in the gauge.  Then when I go to flip, the ones that are still in the gauge get relegated to practice.  Using MTM cases btw which also work with the flip method.  I recommend this little handy accessory in addition:

    https://rangepanda.com/collections/misc-products/products/dmd-hundo-risers?variant=31072202391651

Depending on your OAL, this will help catch more case gauge failures.

Thanks. I watched a video where a guy just used the lid of an MTM box to do the same job as your linked accessory. So I think I'll try that first. I have several MTM boxes, so I'll just make sure I leave at least one empty for doing the testing.

  15. Thanks guys, I went with the Hundo. Seems to get the best overall reviews also. I'll just use the reloading box double flip thing to get them out of the tester and boxed up. Seems simple enough.

    iflyskyhi,

I have some Armanov stuff for my dillon, and it works well. I wanted to go that way, but there are just too many negative reviews on their plunk tester for me to feel confident about it. Glad you're happy with yours though.

  16. I've noticed my CZ S2 is more picky about my reloads than any of my other 9's of various makes. Not a OAL issue, but slight case expansion apparently. I have a single round plunk tester that works well, but that's not going to work for me as I'd like to check every round I make. So I'm looking at the 100 rounds plunk testers. Shock Bottle, Armanov and Lyman each make one. Does anyone have any experience with any of them, good or bad? Like most things, you read reviews and each have positive and negative feedback. The Armanov seems nice with it's included flip tray, but I don't think that's a show stopper since 100 round plastic reloading boxes will work also.
