  1. Yeah CO is definitely gaining popularity! I think that’s so to companies putting out red dots that are affordable and gun companies making rmr ready guns.

Ok, I will take the bait, how does it make it more like Open? In open I can have a 170mm mag, mag well, major PF scoring, frame mounted dot, race holster.

None of that in CO. Just get a dot, only similarity at all!

Limited you get a magwell, major PF scoring, custom 2011. That has more similarity to open!

I said more like open not like open. You are right there are a lot of differences I agree. But I have always Called CO poor mans open because it’s like shooting open with out the things you stated above. CO in my eyes is more closely related to open than any other class. Back when it was 10 round max it was more like production. I love CO but personally I used it until I could get an open gun. For my area of shooting I was the only person shooting CO so I kind of compared myself to the open shooters maybe thats were my thinking comes from.

Gotcha, looks like it was changed,. That really is a plus for going to carry optics! Thanks for the link!

Yeah it is a plus for CO but it also makes CO more like open. I wish it  was 10 rounds. I like CO a lot, but it wasn’t doing it for me so that’s why I switched to open.

I had never considered the franchi, but after reading a few threads on BE, it looks like an excellent option especially for the price. Where do you buy extension tubes, and other parts?

Thanks for making me rethink this ?

I got a tube from Nordic, TTI carrier,TTI safety. I also have a red neck tactical bolt release.

Check out a Franchi Affinity. It's basically a Stoeger recoil system but made by Benelli. They can be found as cheap as M3Ks. I l am extremely happy with mine.

I 100% agree with him! I have a Franchi Affinity with all the upgrades I could think of and have about a grand into it. Shoots just as well as my fathers Benelli M2. Plus the grip of the gun is smaller than the M3k so fits my hand better but that’s personal preference.

Not bdh821 but I know a few guys who are Open shooters who tried CO. They too prefer Open. CO guns move around much more than an Open gun. Therefore dots jump quite a bit.

That is true the dots do more a lot more. It takes a little time to get used to but once you can track that dot through the recoil you are golden.

  7. Well I first started shooting CO I called is poor mans open. Now don’t take that as a bad thing! It was a ton of fun! I will never get rid of my carry optics rig. However for me personally I am making the switch to open because I want to go as fast as possible. No doubt the red dot will make you faster and more accurate. But also the lack of people in my area shooting CO means I have no one to shoot against l. It also comes down to how much you want to spend as stated by one of the other members above. As well as if you want to go though the trouble of gettting an open gun to run right, dealing with mag problems, so on and so forth. CO is going to be a lot less hassle.  So you have to take a lot of thing into account.

I picked up a Vortex PST Gen ii for $560 new. I couldnt pass it up for that. I got it today and havent mounted it. The glass is very good, 2 fold better than the strike eagle. Less distortion at the edges and much better resolution. The PST Gii feels very well built, good clicks, good eye relief, great parallax, good red dot, etc. I'll post more after range time.

Who uses the cute little sun shade?

You got a killer deal in that optic! Hope you enjoy it! Look forward to hearing the range report.

I guess we could spend countless hours batting this subject around, passionate camps on both sides, all with valid points. I guess it's not the equipment, but the comradery, competition, and support for the sport which drives us to the fun.

I agree pick one and have fun that’s why we do this.

  10. I just got into the open also. With the gun, mags, and rig I'm in for about $5500. But after the cost of that stuff, reloading open doesn't cost much more than anything else.

I'm running it with no issues.  I am using 8.0gr under a 124gr PD RN using a CCI SP Magnum at 1.165".  Making 172PF out of a Tanfo V-12 barrel.  I'm surprised you'd be at 8.5gr for a barrel with no holes.

I am going to experiment with Autocomp, AA#7 and CFE Pistol this winter.  Not because I don't like HS-6 but just because.

Yeah I'm also surprised by 8.5 out of a DVC. But also I have had no problems with HS6.

Not sure why you would need 4 140 in open, I would do 3 170 and 2 140 or better still 3 170 and 2 155. As almost never use my 140s. It's 170 into a 155 and for me loading a 155 is easy than the 140.

I might look into the 155s. But why not just run all 170s if you reload into 155? I figure I will start with a 170 in the gun then reload into 140s most of the time.
