  1. The entry deadline for the Overlord Memorial Cup (17 Sept 2016) and the Cardinal Cup (18 Sept 2016) is less than 4 weeks away. Determination of awards is based upon entries received by 27 August. There is a limit of 65 guns each day due to time constraints on the Moving Target Events. Last year we had to turn away shooters who waited until the last minute to try signing up, which was a disappointment for us as well as the shooters involved.

These are the largest and longest running NRA Action Pistol matches east of the Mississippi River. At present, the roster is over half full with entries and donations for the prize tables coming in at a steady pace. Cash & merchandise will exceed $14,000 over the 2 events, so get those entries in soon if you plan to shoot with us in September.

Thank you to those who got your entries in before now.

  2. Don't know the exact velocity differences, but I worked up a load @ 40-50* for NRA Action Pistol, which is minor PF. It ran fine until a hot spring day when I left the ammo in MTM ammo boxes on a black tailgate in the sun for about an hour. Turned the 1911 into a single-shot. Wouldn't even extract, let alone eject or reset the hammer/trigger.

  3. I have a GLOCK 27 and bought the conversion barrel for 357SIG. Was showing it off to some guys at the range and the difference in recoil/muzzle flip between the 2 calibers. Dropped in the .40 barrel and forgot to change ammo! 357 SIG brass looks really funny when fired in a .40 barrel! :roflol::ph34r:

  4. An arched MS housing will slightly change your initial sight picture on the draw and will make the gun point slightly higher than you're used to now. That can be overcome with practice draws and dry firing, but initially you may have a problem with that.

You might try building up the GS "bump" and try that before you buy a new MS housing. That can be done with some tape stacked on itself in several layers, and doesn't hurt the gun if you don't like it. If that works for you, then get some JB Weld and replace the tape with the needed thickness.

  5. I'll go back to my original posting on here a few years ago regarding comp cleaning........and IT WORKS!

Before the match and after every stage in a match, spray the inside of the comp with a lanolin-based case lube... Dillon, Frankfort Arsenal, MidSouth Shooters Supply, they are all pretty much the same. Shake off the excess and go shoot it. The lanolin softens up the fouling, and the comp can be cleaned at home after the match with any good bore cleaning solution and cotton swabs. Be sure to spray the comp after EVERY stage, and even if you don't get around to an immediate cleaning at home, it keeps the fouling soft. I've even waited a few days before cleaning and it WORKS!

No harsh chemicals to worry about peeling finishes or harming any part of the gun, inside or out. I got the original idea from watching a top-level shooter use gun oil in his comp during a match and just brain-stormed the idea of using case lube instead.

    Serendipity!

  6. I wore a hat for the first time last weekend, I don't see how you do it . it was waaay hotter with a hat than without.

Haven't got the nerve to wear those 'man' scarves - maybe in the winter, but summer??

Back when I was a kid we had a crazy neighbor who wore a black trench coat all summer - said it kept the heat out - maybe he was onto something :roflol:

We had an old guy that worked on our farm back in the '60s who swore that 2 pair of pants did the same in the summertime as that trench coat-wearing guy you mentioned! Maybe we're both missing something but.............I don't think so!

  7. The only mention I could find on the NSSF web page rules for Rimfire Challenge is: "1.0.4 Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot." At our club level matches that's the rule we use.....finger can be inside the trigger guard, but visibly off the trigger.

The rules addressing "finger outside the trigger guard" fall under loading & reloading but nowhere else in the official rules.

  8. Where most Metallic Sight (no mover front sight) and Productions shooters begin to lose it is that they "score" their target as they are shooting. They get the proper lead factor going for the first and maybe the second shot, then start looking at their hits. This tends to make the gun point at the hits where they're looking instead of the proper lead factor they used for the first shots which were probably really good hits!

Practice on static targets works in the beginning, but in the end, a real mover is essential to fine-tune your shooting on this event.

I see that BaggerJoe is in LA, so get with the guys at Lake Charles, if you haven't already. They are some of the best in the country and they have 2 movers set up. Their web site is:

Tell 'em Alan sent ya' and I promise they won't giggle more than a couple of minutes!

  9. Whatever you buy, DON'T GET A BLACK ONE! Stuff gets lost in there and you'll swear that it's gone. Had a friend that was "sure" he'd lost or misplaced a suppressor (can), ordered a new one and 3 months later the old one showed up in the bottom of a BLACK shooting bag! :roflol:

  10. I ran some D&J bullets in 147 a few years ago and these are the specs:

    9 MM D&J FMJ 147 UNIQUE 4.4gr WSP 1.135 - OAL

    9 MM D&J SWC 147 231 3.8gr WSP 1.135 - OAL

I've also run some Montana Gold 147s but can't remember the load specs. They were extremely accurate, and soft shooting, as you said, but I shoot NRA Action Pistol, and the lead factor on the mover was a bit much with that slow a bullet. With Titegroup, I'd start around 3.5gr and work up from that on any 147gr bullet, but give MG a try and you will probably be happy with the results.

  11. Hell no! Old age and treachery beats youth and exuberance every time!

Lots more to be learned from those who have been there and dunt it than most folks my age (33) and younger realize!

In that case you Should have been around when I went through my advice/advise correction phase. LOLOL damn near drove me back to drinking. I just had to finally accept 30-40% of people can't get it right. Now I just grit my teeth when I see it

Same here with the difference between affect & effect. Another "grit your teeth and shut the (*&^ up!" situation.

  12. The 2016 Overlord Memorial Cup and Cardinal Cup matches will be on 17-18 September 2016 at Bedford VA. We are limited to 65 guns due to time constraints on the Mover each day. Lunch is included along with water & drinks all day both days. Prize tables will be in the neighborhood of $5,000+ each day in addition to awards cash for the top finishers in each classification/division. Prize table will be by random drawing.

  13. In 2014 we had the infamous World Shoot in Kentucky so more Internationals made the pilgrimage that year than normal I think.

Yes definitely better to fund the new mover at Pioneer than give us more bling. The Flagler Cup is a big added draw card for me to travel so far as it gives me a second shoot way bigger than I can get at hone. Thanks again Ron and team.

You're probably correct on that idea about the World Shoot.

I understand the NRA show is the week before most years.

True dat! Every year it's within a week or 2 of the Cup.

  14. Over the past 8 years the Bianchi Cup has been through many fluctuations insofar as participation goes, with a low number of 154 shooters in 2009 to a high of 282 in 2014. A break-down of the statistics is very informative, when analyzed. The overall numbers drop from last year is 23%! Over the 7 years prior, the Cup averaged a 10% increase per year.

The number of shooters slowly increased from 154 in ‘09 to a high of 282 in ‘14. This was due, in part, to increases in Metallic & Production shooters. Metallic went from 29 in ‘09 to 68 in ‘14 with Production increasing from 28 to 90 between ‘09 & ‘15 primarily due to the fact that the NRA decided to pay prize money to the top 50 in Production with only the top 20 in Metallic & Open getting cash awards.

This year the format was changed and the reduction in shooters went like this over last year’s numbers: Overall = down>23%, Metallic = down >20%, Production = down >51%, Newcomers = down >65%, Juniors = down >41%, Women = down >25%.

International shooters dropped from a high of 61 in ‘14 to only 43 this year. Many previous US shooters’ and sponsors’ names were conspicuous in their absence this year. There has to be a reason beyond the usual excuse that it’s the economy, etc. The format change is rather like Communism; it looks fine on paper, but in practice, it sucks! It may be great for the spectators and the media coverage, but for what I call the “support shooters”, the ones who pay to shoot but stand relatively no chance of coming in at the top of the lists, get nothing for even being there as opposed to years past. Add in the extra 2 days of meals and hotel bills and it’s fast becoming cost prohibitive for the lower level shooters to have a reason to come out and shoot.

Why spend another 1-2 day’s hotel bill for a “free meal” to see only the top shooters walk away with everything of any decent value that was donated with the intent that all shooters would have a chance at that merchandise?

All the donated firearms, with the one exception, were presented to the top overall shooters instead of during a random drawing as in the past. Vendors were asked to pay more (in cash) for tables at the Vendor’s building as opposed to merchandise as in the past and any donated merchandise was given to the top 20 instead of being included in the random “shooters bags” as in the past.

I wasn’t there, so I don’t have a “dog in this fight”, but I have participated in at least 12 Bianchi Cups since 1998. In running the largest AP matches east of the Mississippi, I want to have at least some input though. This is headed in the WRONG direction! I have contact with many of the top shooters in the world, and from what I’m hearing many, if not most, won’t be back at Columbia next year! That’s what a police officer would call a “clue”! NRAHQ listens but they don’t hear what’s being said!

When the program was turned over to a “Bullseye shooter” who didn’t listen to the “support shooters” it could only lead to catastrophe and that’s seems to be what’s happened here! The current format is great for the spectators and the media, but for the participants, not so much.

    Just my $.02
