  1. Hodgdon Longshot will destroy most plastics if left in contact for more than a few weeks. It either appears to melt some plastics or make them very brittle.
  2. I had a very nice steel challenge match with the pcc today. Loving the side charger, especially with the bolt release paddle removed. As a side note, cleaning the upper with the bolt still in it is not a problem. I can even remove the firing pin if I need to.
  3. My plan for cleaning the upper is to use a liquid wich is usually alcohol and compressed air, rinse/repeat until clean. I will remove the handle only when it is necessary.
  4. I was thinking about making something with the handle up on the handgaurd and an op rod to push the bolt back, but it seemed like too much work! Cutting the pocket in the side of the bolt was interesting. Two brand new hss endmills just made a squeeking sound when they came into contact with the bolt. I lucked out and found a carbide endmill of the right size and a flat bottom. After making the pocket i put the handle in and marked the the hole for the allen head bolt with a transfer punch. The metal under the surface of the bolt was softer and much easier to work with. The bolt release button will be gone tonight. I have a steel challenge match on Saturday. I want to see if i can match or better my rfro times! You guys have been very helpful. Thanks!
  5. Hi Dave, I had a sdb and broke it several times. If I knew about Hornaday One Shot then, I would still have it. Makes reloading so much easier. Welcome, this place is great!
  6. I shot my first match with the side charger today. I really like it. I didn't have to touch that awkward charging handle once! Things that i learned over the weekend. No matter how tight you put the side charging handle on, it still needs locktight, and the release button on the bolt stop has to go. I think that I will try a bad lever. Anyone know why I don't have any mb's left for posting pictures? It says that max file size is 0.49mb. Also, I took 8th place in a 5 stage match today, and I was the oldest guy (50) on my squad!
  7. I have posted maybe 4 or 5 pictures on the site and now it says max size is 0.49MB. Nothing is that small. How can I fix this? Thanks! John
  8. I have at least 2 matches left this year. It already seems to be more convenient. This should be good!
  9. Thanks! Thats high praise coming from the b.e. gang! I just finished just now and got it put together. Too bad that I don't have any ammo loaded for it. I'll whip up 100rds after work tomorrow.
  10. Here is the bolt handle. I left both ends long for final fitting. It weighs 1.2oz with the allen bolt in it. I'll cut the upper reciver tomorrow.
  11. Those are very nice. Funny that there are no pictures of the left side in the description, but there are in some of the reviews.
  12. Thanks for all of the great replies. Hopefully I will be able to start on this, this weekend. There are 2 matches around here this weekend, walls of steel in RI on Sat.,and a 3gun in Nh on Sunday. I has seen (online) the non recip charging handles and think they are really slick. I like the one thats up on the handgaurd. I assume that it has an oprod that runs to where the nose of a conventional charging handle would pull on the bcg.
  13. Shot a few loads thru the chrono today. All were a 9mm 115gr plated round nose berrys, 1.160 oal. 3.0gr of clays, 1068.7 fps for 122.9pf 3.5gr of clays, 1193.8fps for 137.29 pf 4.0gr of tightgroup, 1306.9fps for 150.29pf 3.0gr of clays was super light w/ almost no recoil. 4.0gr of tightgroup was snappy but very little dot movement and very accurate.
  14. I have a stoner that is 1/2-28. I remember reading a cautionary statement somewhere about installing a .223 brake on their pcc barrel.
  15. Thank you, very helpfull. Ill take some pictures when i start the mods. Just waiting for some drillrod to show up.
  16. Thanks Steve. One more question, what has been done to the bolt catch on your ar? I know that there can be some interference with a left side bolt, bolt catch, and your finger (ouch!).
  17. Nice! Thats exactly what I decided to do to my ar9. Would it be possible to get a close-up of the bolt handle?
  18. I guess that I was over thinking things a bit. This makes it seem much simpler. I do try not to run a gun dry. My open gun doesn't have lrbho, so I have developed a terrible habit of counting shots even when I don't have to. I do like to lock the bolt back for general gun handling purposes. That's just me. I might be a little OCD. This gives me something to practice to be more familiar with my gun's operation. I operate my handgun and shotgun like second nature, but not there with an AR yet. Only used the ar9 for steel challenge so far. Next month I will be using it in a 3gun match with no shots farther than 75yds. I'll run my pcc with a left side charging handle for a while then decide if I want one on my rifle too. Thanks for all of the responses, you guys have been very helpful.
  19. Thanks, this all sounds like good advice. I did have it set up to short stroke, but i missed the bolt hold open feature. AR Stoner puts them on the right side, and i watched a guy on YouTube put one on the right side. I figured that if JP puts it on the left side there was a good reason.
  20. Clearing an AR after a stage has always seemed a little awkward with the rear charging handle.
  21. Im just trying to figure this out. So, i would keep my strong hand on the grip to operate the mag release and the trigger, and use my left hand to insert mags, operate the bolt and bolt catch? Will this be less awkward than using the rear charging handle? It would seem so. What would be the disadvantages with the bolt on the right side?
