  1. My son and I recently took one of his two-day classes. I can't recommend them highly enough! It made an immediate difference in our skills and mindset. Well worth the money, IMO. He does these around the country.
  2. Quick update: I used the Magtech ammo in a club match yesterday, and it was a disaster. Countless failures to feed. Completely unlike my experience at the practice range. I have some Highland Lakes ammo on order, with an OAL of 1.2", per the recommendation of CK Arms.
  3. I asked CK Arms via Facebook. I figured there was no harm in following their instructions, and there might be some good in it. I used the Brazos recommendations for my Edge.
  4. Well, I went to the range today to finish the break in on my new CK Arms .40. The advice I had was to shoot no more than one magazine every ten minutes. So knowing I'd have some time on my hands, I brought a few other handguns: my 9mm STI Edge, Glock 17, and FNS-9C. Of course, the Glock and FN feel like crap compared to the CK. So I'm thinking maybe I should sell the 9C and get a 1911 carry gun. Any recommendations?
  5. Great - I've been there a couple times, but think I saw the best view of it at Maduordam :).
  6. Thanks! I'm sure it will be educational ... and humbling :).
  7. I ran more cheap Monarch and LAX ammo through the pistol today, and each ran flawlessly. Also one more entry to add: Sig Sauer 180gr FMJ: 1.1251, 1.1250, 0.0014; None This ammo ran great, and was among the most consistent in OAL. The pistol is broken in now (as are my forearms), and I'll try it at a USPSA match this Sunday. Can't wait.
  8. Thank you! We went to the 3GN Regionals in Navasota a couple weeks ago. Not exactly Houston, but not too far away. Impressive facility....
  9. Wher in the Netherlands? I lived in Leiden briefly in the '70s. Made it back about five years ago, and my goodness, it has changed.
  10. Hi! New to the sport but a long-time casual shooter. I've been in San Antonio for about two years, and was in Massachusetts prior to that. Been shooting USPSA, Steel and 3Gun for about a year. So much to learn! My teenage son love three gun, but I've come to the conclusion that it is hard enough achieve proficiency with one gun, much less three. Got my son introduced to shooting at 11 years old, with long range rifle shooting. My first matches were with a little FNS-9 Compact, which added its own challenges. Quickly moved up to an STI Edge 9mm. Now breaking in a CK Arms .40. Not enough time for practice and reloading, but hope to take up the latter soon. Thanks for creating such a great and helpful community here!
  11. I started breaking in my new CK Arms Hardcore .40 S&W, using a variety of commercial ammo. I thought the reliability I observed with the ammunition might be useful to others, so I'm sharing these data below. One box per manufacturer was sampled. Interestingly, where FTFs were observed, the first instance experienced within the first three rounds fired from that box. From each box, I sampled the ammo OAL, expecting the longest to feed most reliably. The results didn't support that assumption. I sampled six rounds from each box of 50. MBX 140MM magazines were used. Brand: Average OAL, Median OAL, Std Dev OAL, Failure to Feed Experience: LAX New 180g: 1.1201, 1.1190, 0.0038, None PMC 180 fmg: 1.1244, 1.1235, 0.0027, Frequent Fiocchi 170g fmjtc: 1.1266, 1.1265, 0.036, Frequent Monarch brass case 180g tmj: 1.1201, 1.1185, 0.0034, None Aquila 180g fmj: 1.1088, 1.1090, 0.0010, Frequent Winchester Train 170g FMJ: 1.1244, 1.1238, 0.049, None Remington UMC 180g fmj: 1.1268, 1.1255, 0.0038, None Winchester White Box 180g: 1.1225, 1.1210, 0.0045, Constant Magtech: this was ammo borrowed at the range; it wasn't measured, but no FTFs were observed over 10 rounds. The good news is there are a variety of inexpensive sources which ran fine. I look forward to more testing as break-in progresses. Scott
  12. I had an EOTech mounted on an AR. I saw two dots, not one. I zeroed on one of them, but it was easy to forget which one once the buzzer sounded. I moved to an HD Razor, and am much better off. The EOTech has gone onto an M&P .22, which I will begin using in Steel Challenge.
  13. Thanks, everyone, for your great and very helpful input. I ordered a CK Arms Hardcore Limited gun, in .40, with Silver frame, slide and metal grips. The discussion in this thread opened up many new ideas to consider in my selection process, including looking at CK. Many thanks!
  14. Thanks! The CKs look nice. But for a few hundred more, I can get a stock Akai. Is an Akai substantially better? It has a stroked recoil system. I saw a used 6" Benny Hill gun for sale, too. I don't see those at club matches. I'd appreciate your opinion on these choice! Thank you very much.
  15. Thank have astigmatism, and with my EOTech, see two dots, not one. Far from ideal.
  16. Would I need to replate after slide cuts? Thanks.
  17. Should I expect any meaningful difference in recoil between the two? I'm new to .40, having spent all my time shooting 9mm. It seems the tradeoffs might be: Brazos HP Edge: - better trigger - assured fit and finish DVC Limited: - a lighter slide and better grip All things being equal, I think I'd prefer a gun that Brazos has gone over. But if there is a meaningful difference in recoil, I'd probably opt for the DVC. I appreciate your thoughts.
  18. Hi, I want to transition from minor to major in USPSA Limited. Currently shooting an unmodified 9mm Edge. The Brazos tuned HP Edge looks like a great choice. How should I compare it to a stock DVC Limited? I'll be using factory ammo for a while. Many thanks!
