I have not had a chance to measure one but was told it is about 6" which would put it over 150mm... can anyone confirm?

USPSA competitors will invest in whatever gun, gear, or ammo that will maximize their performance. If 40 cal brass becomes impossible to find and USPSA changes the division rules to make another caliber more viable, then competitors will switch to whatever is the new hotness. Competitors usually don't have issues with buying new stuff, even when its not really needed. Would there be whining? Absolutely. But that whining would be happening while they are shelling out $$$ for whatever the next thing is. Racing anything isn't cheap and nothing lasts forever. These are two realities that will never change. If that is too much for you to handle, then maybe racing stuff isn't the best hobby for you. 

True... When I raced dirtbikes I had custom bars, triple clamps, exhaust, rims, seat, case cover, suspension, etc

I was never any good and only raced old and slow class so none of that made me faster but the bike looked good and led to a lot of cool online discussions beyond arguing about jetting and which oil is the best (Rotella).

I vowed not to do that with shooting and shoot FNS mostly which limits the bling potential but I have made up for it in volume

I did Cerakote my FNS 40 in a Captain America theme so I haven't gotten away from the sickness completely.

The capacity limit in production is why I don't shoot it anymore... if I wanted to shoot 10 rounds in a non-restrictive state I would shoot IDPA (not that there is anything wrong with that).

I never looked at it that way. I looked at it being better to split minor and major separate in Limited but if Major is going away on it's own your idea sounds better.

I buy guns for different reasons... Some to collect, some to plink, dinner for protection and some for competition

The only reason I have a 40 is USPSA limited. I would not have a 40 if it wasn't for the scoring advantage

I prefer 9mm and have 3 9mm guns to choose from but I am an occasional shooter at most and typically only on perfect days

I had a shooter reholster after make ready, miss the holster and drop the gun on the ground 15' in front of me with the gun landing on the ground with the barrel on the wood line angled up pointing at me.

[USPSA 1911 legality Question]

I am still a relative newbie even though I have been shooting a couple years off and on.

I don't see a problem with a first time shooter being put in open if he has the won't equipment.

If a shooter shows up with a 1911 to try single stack but has a laser but wants to see where he would have ended up in SS he can simply use practice score after the match to play and adjust to see how different variables would impact things.

I shoot production and limited and occasionally C/O. All with different FNS Longslides. I will adjust my class after the match to see how I would have done on the other classes.

[FN 509 24 Round Magazine]

FN announced their 509 Tactical and it comes with two 24 round magazines.(https://fnamerica.com/press-releases/fn-announces-expansion-fn-509-series-release-fn-509-tactical-pistol/)

 

All I have been able to do with my Carbon Arms extended baseplates is get to 23 rounds in my FNS 9Longslides and the cost of the baseplates + magazines are more than the 24 round FN magazine ($60 retail). 

 

Does anyone know the dimensions of the new 24 round magazine and if it is more than 140mm? I would like to buy a couple to use for Limited Minor and C/O. The stock 17 round FN 509 magazines work in the FNS pistols so I don't see why the 24 round magazines wouldn't either.

For me, as I have said, I am not advocating for a change but do see some issues with calling a class production when you can modify the trigger. All the other classes seem to make sense with their name and what is allowed except production which to me should just be a gun off the shelf and if you want to limit rounds per magazine that is fine too but as long as you can modify the trigger it isn't production. But... I openly admit that is more my OCD than an issue with USPSA. It annoys the friggin begejesus out of me and I will always make a comment on it but if it doesn't change I will still shoot production because I like it.

 

Settling on 15 rounds vs 10 from a strategy standpoint doesn't seem to be a big difference IMO but I am looking at it from a C class shooter perspective and do not game things very well anyway. I typically just shoot, move, reload on the move and shoot again. I am 46 and fat so I move slow and have plenty of time to flub a reload before I get to my spot so reloads are not what is costing my time as much as my poor footwork and Reese's addiction. Maybe at the A level or higher 15 rounds give you a bit of an advantage but of the fastest shooters I shot with at a match shot SS running 45 and he won overall that day and was amazingly fast. I don't remember if he was M or GM or what but his reloads were so quick that I couldn't tell he did it.

 

People getting upset by a "bench shooting" thread is a bit over the top. New members come in all the time (like me) and want to engage. Digging up an old thread to discuss something like this is not that engaging and is boring. I do searches for things I want to learn but reply to things I want to discuss. For this I was waiting on a doc for over an hour (and knew there would be a wait) and joined in via Tapatalk. I enjoy the different views, even if it has been rehashed a few times already. I have a long history of Internet discussions going back to usenet days in the 90's so I know the routine and have myself told people to "search" or "RTFM" on different topics but as I got older and chilled out I have come to enjoy the new perspectives or rehashing of old perspectives by new people.

Doesn't change the fact that they're imposing their will on thousands of other shooters.

Opinions don't impose anything and can be ignored and in online discussion easily ignored.

The only things here that would impose anything are rules and laws. Sharing an opinion about either doesn't impose anything.

The issue really isn't the magazine restriction... It's that production isn't really about production. It is just the name of a class that you can shoot a gun with a modified trigger, grip... modify things so the gun is no longer standard on the gun when bought.

With all the mods now allowed changing the mag rule won't matter and the name of the class will still be a misnomer.

Exactly.  The "production" division is not about shooting guns "out of the box."  The division, as it has developed (and been embraced) is about juggling magazines 4-5 times per stage.

I have no problem with the rules per se and will continue my quest to become a B shooter this year in Production but realistically that is only the name of the class but a misnomer since so many changes can be made.

Ironically one thing that comes standard on the gun, the magazine, is not to be used as it came.

But if I ran things there would be less classes and simpler things. But that would ruin it for a lot of people I am sure

Even though I disagree I am not complaining. I support things staying the way they are but won't have a problem with the magazine change if it ever happened just as I don't have problem with allowing trigger jobs even though I disagree with it.

The joy and curse of being a C shooter is that no rule change or gun change will make me a better shooter

BTW I only shoot FNS in production, CO and Limited. I don't feel at a disadvantage but I certainly don't have any customization

You're missing the point.  For those who are invested in production currently, a central part of the appeal is lots of reloading.  They LIKE it that way.  
 
 

As I said earlier I went to production to work on reloading and yes I like it that way but objectively speaking removing the magazine restrictions won't change much. It won't change classifiers at all and only a little on strategy for other states depending on the gun.

The shield and 1911 comment was mostly tongue and cheek.

There are already other mods made to a production gun that makes it a non production gun. Removing magazine restrictions doesn't make it a non production gun but a trigger job does.

Shoot a 1911 or Shield in production if you want. I just think a magazine restriction doesn't matter at all and should be removed. Keep all the other rules or take some away. The way production is right now fine but it would be just as good and not cause any issue by removing magazine restrictions for those in the allowed production list. All of the sky is falling over a few extra rounds is laughable. Other orgs do it differently with no issue so there is no proof it will become an arms race or anything like that.

no, because that turns it into a gear race, and after 1 season, everyone will be running the 1 semi-custom race gun that holds the most rounds. Right now pretty much every mfr makes a reasonably competitive gun.

Then limit production to only be those guns that are produced at a certain amount from a factory so the Semi Customs that don't produce enough to meet the production rule wouldn't count.

that is how they kept the production rule intact for Motocross and Supercross by having a minimum quantity from the factory so you couldn't just bring a one-off and call it a production bike

For the record I don't care if it is 10, 15 or whatever. I choose production to work on my reloads in a real works setting. I am a lowly sub 50% C shooter.

Still by definition production is what is available and legal in your state so if it went to a higher round count I wouldn't complain.

And an XDM holds 19+1 so you are outgunned already. Thats one reason a number other than 10 would have to be around 15 since just about any duty sized gun holds at least 15.

I am fine with it as long as it production.

Even shooting CO where I can load a lot I rarely use all of them because of reloading strategy based on the stage and having 100 rounds won't effect my classifier strategy anymore than having 8 so I have no problem if production allows any magazine that comes standard with the gun when bought.

Why limit 15? My gun comes with 17 round magazines so straight from production it hold 17. Shouldn't production be based on what is produced and legal in that state?

Thanks... my production holster has a Captain America Shield design that covers over the slide and I would hate to dremel it out even a little. I was also concerned the top one didn't cover the trigger guard enough but as long as the bottom one is legal then I should be good to go.

I just got my FNS 9L cut for a Vortex Viper red dot but only have these two holsters to use and wasn't sure if they are legal with the barrel hanging out.

 

Rule book only says the slide has to cover up to the side (or 1/2" I think) but Yaqui holsters are exempt so not sure if this may qualify? Don't want to get DQ'd my first CO match.

 

I typically shoot production but that holster will not work with the optic.

[fn pistol question]

I shoot a FN9L in production. I am new and just knocking on the door of C class so not having aftermarket stuff isn't an issue. However, no other gun I have shot fits my hand and feels as good as FN's.
