  1. Well, it's a done deal. Picked up a M&P Pro from Quantico today. Cleaned it up, made it to the range and had time to put 150 rounds through it. Love it. Tracks much better for me than my 17. Wasn't planning on buying a Pro Series but I like it a lot and feel like I'm not going to have to do much if anything to it except buy more magazines and shoot it. Tax put me a little over budget but I'm okay with that. Take up on the trigger is a little gritty out of the box but I'm sure it'll smooth out. Break and reset is really nice. I like it better than my 17 with a Vanek GSSF trigger in it. The stock Novak sights are okay. The fiber rod is really big. Seems like the install was overdone a little bit. I don't like the stock green anyway so I'm going to put a red one in tomorrow and see if I can get the melted end a little smaller. It's huge from the factory. It also shoots to the dot and not the top of the sight. Will take a little bit to get used to that. One disappointing part is both the front and rear sights were not centered up. It's shooting 3-4" left but should be an easy fix. Had 3 failure to feeds from slide lock using the slide release. Was shooting Freedom 124 HP Xtreme. Not sure what that's all about. I have about 700 rounds of that ammo left so hopefully it clears up. Might need to do a little polishing on the feed ramp. Everything else was fine. So about accuracy. So far it's fine. It was really windy today so shooting groups was a little difficult. Was keeping five shot groups in the black from 25 yards on a slow fire NRA target. The pistol will shoot if I do my part. Plate rack from 25 yards was pretty easy once I figured out where to hold. I know it's a honeymoon period but I really like this pistol. I think the Sig is fine but I don't feel like I'm giving up anything by going with the M&P. Plus the M&P just fits me really well. I don't have enough rounds through it to make any really conclusions yet but it just feels so effortless to shoot compared to my Glock. Kind of hard to explain. It's going to be a lot of fun to get to know this pistol. Thanks all for the input.
  2. I read your entire blog last night. Well, not every single post but a lot of them. I would really like to get your thoughts on the differences between the M&P's and the 320. Pluses and minuses of both.
  3. How do you figure out how to set this up with your sights? Is it trial and error or is their math involved depending on the sight radius? I slightly confused.
  4. Good points but aren't most people paying for trigger work on the Sigs too? I'm wondering how many people actually end up swapping barrels on their M&P's? It's a hard stat to track down.
  5. The problem with an aftermarket barrel is the overall cost. My buddy just did one, and he has over $1K in an M&P!Gun $600 Sights $120 Barrel $200 +$35 for fitting Apex trigger $100 I've had (several) M&Ps with KKM barrels, and my P320 will shoot circles around them. Sights and cost of the pistol are a wash. I going to have that no matter which pistol I switch to. The last statement about accuracy between the 320 and M&P is what makes me wonder about M&P's though. It bothers me that I have to doubt the accuracy of a brand new pistol.
  6. So for someone looking to change platforms for a SSP pistol would the 320 be a safer bet over the M&P right now? I went through several drills over the weekend comparing an M&P to my 17 and I was a quicker and more accurate with the M&P on a majority of the drills. I've shot Glocks for 2 years and haven't shot an M&P at all so I was pretty surprised at the results. Seems like getting an accurate M&P out of the box is still a crap shoot though. I only have a few slow fire rounds through a full size 320 (less than 50). I didn't like the take down lever but that has been addressed now. It also shot about 4" high but that's an easy fix. I know they are the new hot item right now but it seems like most of the hype is well deserved. I guess my biggest concern is ending up with an M&P that isn't accurate. I would rather spend money on magazines and ammo and not a new barrel.
  7. I would think the way to would be the 92A1 mainly because of the ability to easily replace the front and rear sight. I like Berettas but I don't care for their stock sights.
  8. I've been running a cut down beavertail on my 19 and 17. Basically no back strap just the beavertail portion. If the weather cooperates tomorrow I'm going to experiment with the large beavertail again.
  9. Something else I hadn't thought about regarding the 21's weight and slower recoil.
  10. I appreciate the input. I've been working on my grip during live fire since posting this. I hadn't thought of firing without a target and just tracking the sights. Something I'm going to try. I've actually been out of commission the last few days. Concussion and broken orbital bone from an accident at BJJ practice. What drives me crazy is my 21, 19, and 26 all seem to come back on target for me without much effort. The 17 has been a struggle since I bought it.
  11. Okay. So I guess I should ask if there is another reason I would have difficulty with getting the 17 to come back on target and not the 21? When I'm working on the plate rack I'm consistently fighting the 17 from plate to plate. When I transition to the next plate I have to wait for the sights to settle back on the target. With the 21 the sights are waiting for me when I get to the next plate. I'm not new to shooting but new to gun games and using a timer. With the 17 my times on the plate rack are usually pushing 5 seconds. If I have to go back and pick up misses it's because I missed low. Times with the 21 are usually right around 4 seconds. Going back to pick up misses happens a lot less frequently. If there is a software problem I should be looking at and not hardware I'm all ears.
  12. I'm using a good grip but I'll continue to work on it. I'm also going to give the 13# spring a try. Thanks all.
  13. I'm shooting a Gen 4 17 in SSP in an indoor IDPA league this winter. It seems like I'm always fighting the pistol to get it to come back on target after recoil. It dips below the target instead of settling back on target. I have an older Gen 3 21 with a lot of rounds through it and it tracks very well for me. This has me thinking that I need to try to drop the recoil spring rare on the 17. The problem is I don't know where to start. Could someone point me in the right direction? I want to stay SSP legal so I believe I need to stay with a Glock guide rod but not 100% sure on this. Would a stock Gen RSA and adapter be the place to start? For what it's worth I'm not currently reloading. I'm shooting 124 grain Xtreme hollow points from Freedom. I don't have a chronograph but they feel like a very light load to me. Thanks in advance for helping a new guy out.
  14. I watched a full size and compact run at an action pistol match Saturday. The lady that was running the full size won the top shot and steel challenge tournament with it. A younger kid was running the compact and doing very well with it. The dad of the kid with the compact said it took 3-400 rounds before it was reliable. The lady running the full size stated that they rarely have failures with the full size and had zero that day. Small sample but I've been looking at 22's for my son. I was considering a 22/45 lite but I'm now leaning toward the full size smith. Easier to break down and clean, similar ergonomics and operation to a "real" pistol.
  15. Not new to shooting but new to competitive shooting. Military background and current Army NG. Currently competing with a Glock 17 that is bone stock. Sights are on their way. Started with a 19 in IDPA last winter that was stock except for sights. I've shot some other local action pistol stuff and one GSSF match. Planning on trying USPSA and steel challenge soon. I'm great at shooting slow. Grew up shooting bullseye. Now I'm trying to learn to shoot quickly while maintaining some kind of acceptable accuracy. I have a long way to go.
  16. I'm soon to be in the same boat. Steel challenge seems like the best/next step in the progression. Lots of opportunities to build skill without the added complexity of movement and reloads. Plus, the two of you can compete against each other on a pretty level field.
