  1. I look at it this way. I could either bring a bunch of spare parts or a backup gun. Now as some one who has had gun issues during a major match, I will always bring a backup gun to any major match. If it’s one where I have driven to then normally I’ll have a small box of spare parts in the car.

  2. I use the DAA Alpha X. I also moved from the Race Master to the Alpha X. One of the things i like about it is the ability to un bolt the holster from the belt mount so it packs flat when you travel. I also love the simplicity of how it works and the ease of changing the block inserts, should i change grips or guns. Most of the open guys at my club use the Alpha X, few have the race masters, some have the older version of the Everglades holster from Universal, and their are a couple who have the GB.

I got the race master when i moved into limited and bought a 2011. So when I moved to open i had a rig already to go. My vote is for the DAA Alpha X. It’s solid and I have had no issues with it once it was set up.

  3. So back to the OP's question about a 2011 being for the wealthy, I think it's about how you go about it. I know guys that run a 2011 in limited with a stock Edge, running factory ammo and basic holsters and mag pouches. I had a DVC Limited, got a good deal on a new one, and ran ammo from a local supplier. I didn't get into reloading until I decided to get into Open.

Don't get me wrong, you can go crazy with custom guns, rigs, ammo and anything else you would need, but you can do that in any division. Since I was a Golf Pro for 10 years it's the same as golf. if you want the latest and greatest, yeah it's gonna cost you money. If not, it can be done reasonably inexpensive.

But for big matches all you need is one 170 and two 155's or 141's in-place of the 155's. I ran with only a 170 and one 155 at this years fl champ and did not have an need to run a third mag, But in the future I will be running at least one more 155. I like the extra rounds vs the 141's.

I agree as in most matches I run the same two mags, but I like having spares incase a mag gets damaged or for what ever reason stops working.

  5. I run all three mags, 170,155 and 140. Which one I use depends on what the stage is. I find I use the 140 and 155 on any stages where I will have to do a reload (over 30 rounds.). If there is no reload then it's the 170 for the stage. I don't think there is any benefit having a 155 over a 170. I have two of each in my bag and use what ever works with the stage.

  6. I could go either way.  The only division specific ones you have are PCC and Open. If you create one for carry optic, do you then need to split the 1911 one into Single Stack and Limited. Then does Limited include glock, M&P, or other plastic frame guns that people use for the division. My point is when does it end. Do you have to re organize all the forums? If I had a question about a Glock, I’d look in the Glock section under factory pistols. If I couldn’t find it in a previous post, I’d ask there.  If there is not talk about doing this for those guns that people run in limited, I don’t think we need to do the same for Carry Optic. For limited you add a mag well and mag extensions. For CO you add a dot and mag extensions. Not a whole lot of difference.

I have yet to see a stage where I don't have the opportunity to reload with out it hurting me.

Seriously?  I see it every week.

What I mean is that I've never had to do a standing reload as part of my stage plan.

  8. Im personally ok with what I get in my magazines. 29 (28 reloadable) in my 170, 26 in my 155, and 22 in my 140's. All MBX mags in 38SC. Even if a stage is going to be 26-32 rounds I will reload. I have yet to see a stage where I don't have the opportunity to reload with out it hurting me. If I am doing a reload I tend to use 2 155's over the 170 and a 140. I always like extra rounds.

Anyone have a load for the Chaos in 38sc and using HS6 or AA7. I'm a couple weeks out and want to have some loaded up when it gets hear. I can't wait for the new gun. Also does it fire any primers, I use Winchester WSR but was also thinking of trying CCI SPP.

I had my load for my Chaos 38sc when I first got it. I was using the load from my DVC Open. 124 gn JHP from Precision Delta with 8.6 gun of HS-6 at 1.24 oal. Made 173pf in the DVC but the Chaos was 160pf. I have not built a load with hs-6 yet for this gun. I am currently using 9.9 grn of 3n38 at 1.235 oal. it gives me 173PF

  10. The Super comp is a rimless case so in the mags it tends to be a more reliable round. All the other aspects of the brass are the same. It just comes down to your choice. Most open guns I shoot with either run 38sc or 9 major. I don't see very many guys who run 38 super.

  11. Use the #3 shell plate. It's a much smoother process. The 9mm plate works but the 223 plate seems to eliminate any issues I was having using the 9mm plate and 38sc. I load 38sc and 9mm and have 1 head for each. All I have to do is switch heads, and shell plates and I'm off and running. It's so much easier than messing with seating depths, oak, ect. I use the Dillon Dies for 38sc, except I'm trying a Redding comp seating die. On the 9mm head I have the lee undersize die to help eliminate any Glock bulge that I may miss during sorting, but my seating and clamp die are Dillon. I try to keep everything as simple and easy.

I get the thought process about swapping out a die or two, but the time you would waste resetting the OAL, and crimp I don't think are worth it. Just have the two full setups and switch heads. It takes me about 10 min to make a full change over from 38sc to 9mm, and thats cause I clean and lube it during the change.

  12. The way I look at it is this. Do you want to carry a bunch of spare parts, or a backup gun. Now as someone who has had a gun go down during a major match, I would rather carry a backup gun that I can just swap out, and do repairs after the day or during off times. I have a backup gun but thats only cause I bought a new open gun and use my old one as the backup.

If I were you, I’d look at a Glock 34, M&P 9mm 5” or an XD 9mm 5”. If there’s a local range near you, I’d rent one of each and let your son try them out before buying. I think you might find that one of them will fit him better than the others (I love Glocks!). After deciding on a pistol, you’ll probably be able to find a used one if you’re not in too much of a hurry. Then 4 mags and a kydex holster and he’ll be good to go.  Good luck and let us know what he ends up getting.

+1. I think this would allow him to find a pistol that he likes and can work easily. Things like reaching the mag release, clearing a jam or malfunction should be easy for him. Plus any of those  3 you should be able to pick up used.

  14. I normally only get at most a year out of the springs in any 2011 mags that I use. I have gotten in the habit of changing springs in my MBX mags after 6-7 months. Since we shoot all year round in Florida, I tend to wear them a little more. I know people who run grams followers and springs in MBX tubes, but I've stuck with full MBX set ups and have never had an issue. I get 20 in the mags reloadable.
