  1. Well, we finished up another great Frozen Chosen - an annual match that I started when I took over the action pistol program at my local club. It is the "first" match of the new year in the country, held on Jan 1st, in of all places.. Maine. Not California, Arizona, Florida... Frozen Maine.

Last year we had a dozen crazy participants to shoot in the rain (38 degrees) . This year we had 16 to shoot in the snow (19 degrees) with 16" of fresh powder from the night before, with several folks frustrated that they couldn't make it to the match as they could not get out of their driveways due to the snow. I have never had to dig DOWN to place a shooting box before. :surprise:

Along that same line.. if a target is 5' at the shoulders, is that 5 ' from the frozen ground or does that take into account recent snowfall?

You will see what I mean when you look at the pictures.

(BTW.. I am the fella with the sweet looking SJC open Glock)

I was up there the week before new years had I known you were shooting I would have extended my stay. Left the 27th

  2. I use vv N320 4.6 grains at 1.13 oal Zero 180 JHP, Zero FMJ, Precission Delta FMJ. All with federal primers and once or more fired brass. Is a very consistant load 171 pf +or - .5 every place I've been from Fla. to Wis. different times of the year. At least 10000 rounds of it so far and counting. I hope this helps. All rounds have been through and XD .40 tac

I turn 50 this year. Have been shooting for 3 years now the 47 years prior to that no gun handling at all didn't own one. I have learned alot over the last 3 years that I wish i'de learned when I was much younger. Goal setting, how to practice, and quality of practice. Matter of fact I wish I'de learned about this sport 20 years ago.

Lanny Basham says if you practice once a week your likely to get worse not better, I believe him. You need to do good quality practice a minimun of 3 times a week 5 is best with at least 1 live fire practice with set things you are going to practice, groups, transitions, bill drills etc. Don't just sling 200 rounds at a target 30 ft. away. If cost is a factor you can practice everything except actually putting holes in the target through dry fire.

During the shooting season I shoot approx. 1000 rounds a month (practice and matches) and dryfire alot. I am a C class shooter with 3 plaques for 2006 even won a slot to nationals this year. And I plan on bringing home a trophy from Tulsa. Did I mention I'm 50 5'11" 268 lbs (50 lbs overweight) If I can do it you can do it. It just takes practice and dedication

  4. I just tested the following load today in my XD 40 Tactical:

    3.6 grs N320

    Montana Gold 180 Bullet

    WSP Primer

    1.140 OAL, crimp .420

I haven't chrono'd this load yet, but I did have a couple of rounds that did not eject. It is possible that I was "limp wristing" the pistol.

I'm using the stock 18lb spring, which has about 2500 rounds on it. Didn't chrono the load, but it was extremely accurate and soft. However, I'm going to try 4.0 grs of N320 and see if that is more reliable for cycling.

I had been using 3.6 grains of CLAYS with the same specs as above, but is seems that CLAYS has a pressure spike, as I had two case failures last week. So, going to work on developing with N320 (since I have a couple pounds and I use it for my 45 ACP loads).

vv320 works fine in my XD40 for both major and minor

    I use for minor

    3.7 grains 320

zero fmj and jhp 180 grain

    1.140 oal crimp .420 Approx. 128--130 pf

    federal small pistol primers

    And for major

    4.7 grains 320

zero fmj and jhp 180 grain

1.140 oal crimp .420 just cronoed at area 6 171pf

    federal small pistol primers

Put about 3000 of the minor loads through the XD last year with no problems and am up to about 5000 of the major loads this year with no problems. Very light recoil for the minor loads and a flat recoil for the major loads. I hope this helps out a bit.

  5. Thanks for your replys. I believe your right I am letting my expectations get the best of me. This week I've been focusing on the fundementials and basics like actually seeing the sight instead of pointing the gun in the generial direction of the target being delibrate in my movements ( reloads draw etc) and focusing on my game not worring about beating someone and keeping up. I am going to relax at my matches and just aim as Jake says I'm sure the progress will come just not on my minds schedule.

  6. This is my first post so please bear with me . I've used the search function and can't find what I need. I have been shooting for a little over a year now ( prod. and L-10 ) and gone from last to in the top 4 or 5 in our club plenty of stage wins and even 1 match win at the local matches ( C class shooter ) I dryfire at least an hour a day shoot league Tues. and live fire Thurs. I feel that I am doing all the right things transitions draws reloads using Steve Anderson's book Matt's book and on the second read of brians book. My problen is that over the last month my proformance has been such like I've almost never shot before. Times and scores way off not shooting up to my previous ability. What am I doing wrong ? What can I work on or not work on ? Getting somewhat frustrated please help.

    Thanks DVC Glen
