  1. Yes, I do have the infrared setup on the chrono so pretty sure I'm getting accurate readings.
  2. I know that I am getting 5.6, checked several times with a digital scale. I pulled the bullet off some WWB factory ammo and found 5.2 grs of some powder in them. I shot some of the WWB factory ammo through the chrono. We all know that factory is loaded pretty low and it still registered in the 550-600 range. I really do want my nice hand loads to do about 750-800...........HELP!!!!!!
  3. I started loading 45 acp and am doing the following: Winchester brass Federal LP primers Winchester 231 powder.... 5.6 grs Hornady 230 FMJ bullet 1.260 OAL .468 crimp Temperature here in NH is 45 degrees but I was reloading indoors so it shouldn't decrease fps much. I fired a few through my S+W 1911. The Winchester reloading manual says that with 5.7 grs (max load) I should get somewhere around 830 fps. With 5.6 grs I got an average of only 445 fps with a Millenium CED chronograph. If I am near max load, where am I losing 350+ fps? I don't want to go over published max loads but I don't want it getting only 445 fps either. Can anyone help me, please? PS: I called Winchester tech folks but they haven't called me back.
  4. I have been loading 45 acp with 230 gr FMJ (rounded nose) and they feed fine. I would like to load some with either 185 or 230 gr Remington Golden Saber JHP's. Will I experience any failure to feeds with these in my S+W 1911? Any problems that anyone has noticed?
  5. I now hear that 7625 will not yield high fps and that there are better powders for 45 acp. Any help here?
  6. I am beginning to load for my 1911 on my Dillon 550. I want to use 230 gr FMJ and IMR 7625 powder with CCI 300 primers. Does anyone use this combination and can you give me some suggested loads for it? Want to load on the "hot" side of things but stay within max pressures etc. Many thanks.
  7. Does S+W manufacture adjustable sights for the 1911? Can anyone steer me towards a photo and where I might buy them? If not S+W, what are the best adjustable sights on the market for this gun? Thanks.
  8. Thanks everyone, that's the sort of information I was looking for. You've been great.
  9. On my Eagle open gun I now have a CMore on a DP mount. The person that owned it before me had some sight mounted directly on the rear of the slide. There are now 6 mounting holes left in the slide that I would like to have "filled in" and then have the whole gun refinished. Can anyone point me towards someone who does this sort of work? Many thanks.
  10. I have a STI open gun with black grip. I want to replace it with one I saw somewhere on the internet, but can't remember where. It was basically white with red and blue specks in it. Was stippled like the STI black grip I have. Does anyone know what I am talking about and where it can be bought? Thanks.
  11. I have an STI Eagle Open gun that has a plain blued finish, at least I think it's blued. Is it possible to have it refinished in a matte chrome finish so it looks a little nicer? Any problems with doing that? Who does this sort of work, can you recommend someone and give me contact information? Many thanks.
  12. Can anyone who uses IMR7625 for 38 Super please post your loads? Also, what weight bullet, OAL, and resulting fps/pf you get from them. Also, is this powder sensitive to temperature.......do you get lower fps in colder weather and higher fps in warm weather? Many thanks.
  13. I hope I explain this well........I have a handgun that the blueing has "lost its lustre" after many firings. It's like slightly "discolored" because of the heat of heavy use. Is there a rub on/spray on product that will restore the "deep rich" color of the blueing? What do you rub your gun down to keep it looking great? Thanks for the help.
  14. A basic question........ If I load my 38 Super here in cold New Hampshire for 1350 fps (and about 170 pf) when chronoed and then go to Florida for a match, what is the resulting change in fps and pf if there is one at all? Does fps go up in hot weather? Down? Why? I would think that a specific powder charge made for 1350 fps would chrono the same anywhere......but what do i know?????
  15. I need to put an extended ejector in my STI Eagle 38 Super gun. Which ones are the best and where can I get them. Thanks for the help.
  16. These are jacketed hollow points. How "long" is a 50 AE bullet? Can someone with calipers measure one for me so I can compare? These are .766 long and .500 in diameter and 350 grains with an indented "ridge" running around the bullet. Is there a definitive answer? .
  17. I mean just bullets. Can a 50 S+W bullet be used on a 50AE case in my DE? Thanks.
  18. I was just given a box of 50 cal bullets labeled "500 S+W". Is it OK to use these for my 50 AE Desert Eagle? Just confused by the S+W designation. Let me know if OK to load, many thanks.
  19. Can anyone suggest a starting point for reloading the 50AE. I use IMR7625 powder and will be using 335 gr jacketed flat nose or hollow point bullets. Can you give me a powder measure and a fps that I should load for? Also, what primers should I use? Many thanks.
  20. What is the deal with the thumbrests I read about? Do they take the place of the safety so that you disengage the safety and then rest your thimb on it while shooting? Or, do you have to drill holes in the receiver for it? Do they work? What are the better ones out there and where do you buy them? Can anyone supply a link to pictures? Thanks for all information.
  21. I have a STI Eagle Open gun and am presently shooting 124 gr jhp at about 1380 fps, power factor of 171 +/-. It presently has an ISMI 12.5# spring with 4 coils cut off, but I am wondering if I should go to a lighter spring. 11#? 10#? Can you give me some advice? Thanks for the help.
  22. I am now reloading for my STI Open gun that I will shoot next season. I plan on loading 124 gr but want to know if it is better to use JHP's or FMJ's. Either more reliable when loading? Can you give me some advice and reasons for each. Many thanks.
  23. [Merged topics] I have been shooting Production for a while but just got a really nice STI Open gun and want to start shooting Open. In a match, when the RO says LAMR, you do that, and holster the gun....does the safety have to be on or not? If yes, what are some tips as to how to disengage it upon drawing so it doesn't take too long to get the first shot off? In Production I shot a Glock 34 so didn't have to deal with manual safeties. Thanks for any tips.
  24. I am reloading 38 Super for my USPSA Open gun. Which small rifle primers are the best/most reliable? Or, are there really any differences? Thanks a lot.
  25. I started shooting USPSA matches this year and have done a bunch of reading in the hopes of getting better. I have always shot with my weak eye closed since I was a kid (rifles/pistols/shotguns) and am pretty accurate that way. I read conflicting information about whether or not both eyes should be open when shooting. If they should, what are the benefits to doing so. And, are there drills that I can do to get out of my "habit" of closing the weak eye? Many thanks for your help.
