Yep middy with 2 barrel ports and a 3 port BE comp is an excellent combination... Particularly if you use something like shooters world major or AA7 that makes enough gas to run it.

Yes sir. My load is 10.1gr of AA7 with  124g MG's.

     Flat and soft.

  2. I have the 2 and 3 port BE comps. I prefer the 3 port. My current setup is a middy with 3 port. My next build will be a full length with BE 3 port.

I'm just an A classified open shooter and prefer the softness of a full length rig.

I can tell you, I had a middy with an Atlas 2 port comp and that thing was harsh to shoot. The BE comps work MUCH better.

  3. Grip! I'm guilty of this myself. Especially with an open gun. It's easy to get lazy because they shoot "softer" and "flatter", than a non-comped rig.

Here is my friend (who just did the fastest bill drill at CO nats) shooting CO. Look at how "flat" it shoots with the proper grip.

  4. I talked Don into building one of my 9mm middy's with a 3 port BE comp. Could not be happier!

I have another one sitting here with a bunch of other parts waiting to go to Don.

I can tell you not all comps are created equal. I tried another popular 2 port and man it was not even close to the BE comp.

  5. I looked at a LOT of builders when I decided to go Open.

And while there are many great builders who can put an open gun together and make it run....attention to detail and aesthetics are VERY important to me.

I see MANY pistols posted up on here with props being thrown out to the builder on what a great job they did. If you look close at most of those rigs there are tooling marks left, parts not blended, etc.

I know for myself, when I am spending open gun money, I want it to be as perfect as it can be and look GREAT.

So I harassed Don at Venom Custom and convinced him to build me three open rigs.

Then one of my close friends had him build him two open guns.

Then another good friend had Don guild him a rig.

And just a couple of weeks ago, another good friend just received another work of art from Don.

Hmmm.....I think I should be getting some kind of kick back here as Venom salesman of the year!!! 🤔😃

Anyways...settling on a builder can be tuff. Try and look at and shoot as many as you can before deciding.

    Good luck on your build.

    Oh...and some Venom porn....

Thanks appreciate the feedback.  I was thinking of putting a 3 port on my middy but Don talked me out of it.

Yeah…the two port works really good, but I like the little extra the three port provides.

The one I have the three port on is a middy. I will be having Don build me another full length rig with a three port. Why??? Just because…lol.

    Which one?

Totally agree with you!  And those are Sweet!  Do you have a preference with regards to the comp?  I see you have a three port and two, two ports presumably Binary Engineering.

The black and gold and the dark green and black rigs have B.E. comps and the the light green and black rig has a Atlas comp.

The Atlas comp is not as effective as the B.E. comps….by a lot.

I prefer the three port and will be building another rig using the three port.

  8. I talked to many of the popular builders before making up my mind.

Don at Venom was the only one who would build the rigs like I wanted them built.

Most wanted to sell me THEIR idea of an open gun.

Lots of good builders out there and everyone has different ideas of what they want.

One suggestion I would make...ask whoever you decide to go with what the break-in period is or what the break-in entails...hint...if they tell you there is one...find a new builder.

Here are the three Don built for me.

  9. I have two belts setup for my open guns. Currently I have four mag pouches on each of them. I rarely utilize all four of the pouches and and thinking of just using three.

I do have magnets on each belt as will. One I have on the front of my mag pouch that is closest to the holster and the other is a belt mounted one that is off of my left hip.

Any input on how and way would be appreciated.

  10. So with the current primer shortage going on, I thought having a list of what folks have used for primers for open would be helpful to others.

Please add to the list and include any preferences or issues you may had have with any particular brand.

I reload on a 1050 and have exclusively only used small rifle primers, and here are ones I have personally used.

No issues with any of the below. I prefer Fed GM, but “just because”. All have shot well in my open guns an no discernible difference in accuracy between any of them:

    Federal Gold Match SRP (GM205)

Federal Gold Match AR SRP (GM205AR) was worried these might be too hard to set off but no issues

    CCI 400

    Winchester SRP

    Wolf SRP

How are you all getting ahold of him? I asked about having a few guns built, which he responded to and then and radio silence.

He is EXTREMELY busy right now, but he does respond quickly via Facebook.

So no one but myself has gone the route of installing the Volquartsen 10/22 trigger parts in there PC Carbine? That surprises me.

I personally think that it is still the most viable option out there for the cleanest trigger I've felt in those carbines

No sir...I have run the 10/22 trigger parts in mine for quite awhile now. Have never had any issues.

This will not work on an Open gun.  You cannot change just one thing and expect it to work.  In addition, a flat bottom makes the gun way harder to rack on unloaded starts

Huh....ran my 38SC that way. Guy I sold it runs it that way. He even set his other SC rig up that way.

yes, it is a bit harder to rack with the hammer down, buy unless you are girly, it is not an issue.

Again, this is not a new thing and has been around awhile....in fact you yourself wrote about it here some time ago.

    Cheers

  14. If you want to make your rig shoot “flatter” and not use the heavier main spring...try a flat base firing pin stop.

This will slow the unlocking and slide movement and make the gun flatter.

This has been around a long time, so you can do a bit of searching and find lots of info on it.

    Have fun.
