  1. I built an open 9, researched mags to death and was all set to send then away to tune. Bought 140mm STI 38 mags and decided to try it 'as is' out of the packaging. A year later, 6 mags (need many in canada) the completely stock 38s mags work 100%. No spacer, no tuning, nothing. Never one mag related issue.

    I load to 1.170 oal.

  2. I have a 38SC and wanted to shoot 9mm. I had a 9mm top end built and fitted to the 38SC slide. As time went on, I used the 38SC lower for the 9mm and had a new lower built for the 38SC upper. I shoot 38SC where the brass can be retrieved, otherwise, I shoot 9mm on lost brass matches. I now have two complete Open guns, 9mm & 38SC. Usually use one or the other as a backup gun in case something goes wrong at a match & I have to change out guns. In the long run it is better to have 2 Open guns than 1-1/2. The comps are quite different for each caliber.

What are your thoughts on the 2 guns in terms of why they shoot and your preferences?

  3. Watch your video. Don't look at the gun focus on the shooters hands. They are moving quite a bit while the gun is firing. I would guess the shooter has his elbows bent an is allowing the gun to push back into them. When the elbows get hit by the recoil impulse they bend moving the gun in a circular motion. Like the wheels on an old locomotive. This movement exaggerates movement at the muzzle. Keeping the elbows parallel to the ground and rotating the wrist forward like Blake talks about in the above video allow the gun to track flatter.

    I too appreciate these comments.

    cheers,

    J.

  4. I started with fitting small parts as well. Then I bought a mill even though I had no clue what to do with one. Now I build my own from scratch farming nothing out. Shoots great and totally reliable. Heres my 9mm major

I'm kinda like a proud pappa.

Nice looking shooter. I have a mill on the way and built mine too (friends mill). It runs but I am really i nterested in your finish? how did you do that?

  5. Mostly used for trap... "optimized" for rising birds.

I'm not a trap shooter... I shoot mostly sporting with a 34" barrel, but I also shoot skeet and trap with my sporting gun. Long barrel makes it tougher on skeet, but it works. Have to watch the swing... more effor tto start/stop swing...

In trap, I have absolutely no problems.

One the "head more upright" deal.... Head position should be a function of gunfit, not rib height. On a properly fit gun and a properly trained stance, your head will be perfectly upright and alighned so that your shooting eyes is the rear sight and hits the same point every time. If you are looking at the bird with a tiled head, you have fitting or stance issues.

Conversations on this subject with shotgun shooters I trust (one a former National Trap Champion) leads me to believe that the ribs are a trap crutch... Proper training will negate the need/desire for one.

Lots'a crutches being used at the Olympics. But yes, you are right. If you are using a high rib gun and still holding a low barrel then it's nothing more than glitter in my opinion.

But I've never used one so maybe i'm missing out

  6. ^^^Good advice for sure. I'm busy working on the design of version 2, talking with suppliers about custom glass etc.

Who has strong feelings about dot color. Red is the industry standard, green is the new cool thing, blue is kinda wild. Is there a real performance difference? Let's talk about color....

I know it's been said but as a colour blind guy, I sure wish I could get green dot on my gun. Would jump at it if and when one was available.

Very creative jid, I wish I had that kind of vision.

  7. ...............with a high "hold", well over the trap house, you can see the bird better coming from underneath.

Common in Olympic Double Trap where you "intercept the first target...not much swing so to speak.

    Ditto.

it allows you to hold a highter gun as you call for the target and look down and see teh target approaching below your POI. Otherwise teh barrels are in the way and you cannot see as well.

  8. Glad to hear you got it all sorted out. In case others are here looking for answers to hammer follow or issues with the new aluminum STI grip I will add my experience.

I installed the STI aluminum one myself and quite like it . Very pleased!

*Hammer follow, replaced sear spring with a new one and all fixed (left arm was bent and not enough pressure).

    * Grip, it seems the groove that holds the sear spring is slightly higher on my aluminum than it was on my polymer grip. I had to get a more current (newer) sear spring for the gun to operate as the old sear spring would touch the frame (above the trigger bow).

  9. I have limited experience with other comps but have been told my 9mm (full length, shoto comp, no holes) is 'flat' by by other more experience shooters.

To me, the dot appears to sqiggle and I would rather see a vertical line. Probably have a bad grip or something.

    8.2gr HS6 @ 1.17"

  10. just for further support, I have a new open gun... about 1000 round it also started following. Same fix... it seems the left side of the sear sping needed a bit more bend to push the sear. took me a couple tried to figure out the right place to bend but it runs perfect now.

  11. I am really color blind. I would love a color other than red. That is the worst for me. A red fiber optic on a front sight is invisible to me while a green rod looks like it is battery powered. I would love a green Cmore on my open gun.

+1 what a difference eh? <-- note the Canadian finish to that comment.

  12. I run a full size FGW open gun with the Cheely comp. My major loads are a 176PF with a 115 JHP, minor loads are about a 140PF with either a 124CMJ or 115 JHP. Both loads run the gun perfectly with an 8lb sprinco recoil spring. The strangest part is the fact that my zero does not change when going from major to minor.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Just built a 9mm open gun one and it's running very well with 124gr , 173 PF @ 1.18" and 137pf (re manufactured loads at stock oak) with no spring changes (9# recoil spring). zero doesn't change either.

  13. agreed, not a big deal, just make sure threads aren't too clogged with plastic.

Whether or not you gain much over a cylinder or skeet choke? Dont' know, but it cant be a lot.

  14. Anyone shooting 9mm major using Silhouette? What's your load?

Can 3N38 work in such a short load? I'll be using 124gr bullets...

When I tried Silo, I had worked up a few loads to test. Todd K came out with his Chrono and I had a handfull left with 7.6 or 7.7 gr. they averaged >1400fps (174 pf) and todd tried them. He said it was pretty soft and like the appearance of the brass.

If I could find Autocomp I would certainly try that but as you know HS-6 is readily available here.
