    CB45 Range Diary

Well, my Production debut with a G17 wasn't awesome, but by the last stage I was feeling a little more confident. I shot 5 mikes on one stage, and I know exactly how it happened. I lined up the sights, and started a smooth trigger pull. Then about half way through the pull, I yanked the trigger the rest of the way. Mastering a gun with a pivoting trigger mechanism takes more than 300rds of practice, particularly when spoiled with single action. I do like the idea of Production as a division. The gear is simple and about 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of Open/Limited. With a greater emphasis on reloads and shooting points, I think its more challenging than Open. I like shooting Open, but I wouldn't rule out a Production stint in my future...
  3. Congratulations Kurt! You shot a good match today! Your welcome, but you put in the work.. I just showed you my method Classification is way over rated.

It a method to "try" to consolidate the draw and getting into position to shoot both targets. I'm not sure it worked, but it probably didn't hurt. Thanks Bill!!!

Thanks Freeborn! Well last night I finally got some time to measure my mags. They are all jacked up. The lips barely hold bullets in place, I guess they really do go out of spec with regular use. I will be working on that before I go back to open. But at least I have something to blame for my gun issues at Alabama. Dry fire with the G17 seems to be going well. Bullets out mag pouches seems legit. Practice tonight & tomorrow, then a local on Sunday. We'll see how it goes.
  6. RobertLx, I wouldn't get too wrapped up in this endeavor. Use Bill Drills and Berm Drills as a learning tools to watch the sights while shooting fast . I think solely focusing on fast splits is a waste of resources. Learning how to shoot 2 A's on every target, despite target difficulty, in the appropriate time frame, will get you a lot further. I've proved it over and over to myself that splits don't win, A's do. Applying the appropriate sight picture and trigger pull for every shot is way more important than a 1.8s Bill Drill. I am simply amazed how many people don't understand this. Everyone just wants to squirt 2 bullets at each brown target and 1 close to steel, then hope for hits on paper. That's crazyness. IMO, YMMV... good luck!

Thanks RVB! I missed the other D on my score sheets. I guess I had 2 Delta's at Alabama... Results have been posted:http://www.uspsa.org/uspsa-display-match-results-detail.php?action=summary&indx=10805&compid=152 Stages 3 & 5 are where I had gun issues. I think it'll be fun to shoot Prd. Should be a good learning experience. I've had an urge to shoot PRD for a while, so this should cure my ailment. I don't have high expectations, I just want to not embarrass myself.

Thanks guys! Well I began work with the G17 today. I went to the range this afternoon, it was 30°f and 30mph wind. My hands were freezing, but I was able to get some shooting in. Came home and dry fired for about 30 min. By the end I was able to get some decent reloads, but I've got some serious work to do if I am going to take down Rob S. at the IN SS/PRD/REV match in 2 weeks. Let the work begin.

Alabama was fun! Despite feeling a little under the weather Friday, I seemed to pull together a decent match. A couple gun issues, but I suspect it was caused by either dirt or mags. The issues occurred after lunch, I'm kicking myself for not taking the gun apart and cleaning it during lunch. Lesson learned. I ended up 5th in Open, 2nd M. 1 D, 1 Mike, 1 No Shoot, haha! I was pleased with my points shooting on the move, but looking at the results it looks like I was a tad slow. I had a couple 3rd place finishes, that felt rewarding. I'm really proud of my friends Kurt E. and Chris S. Kurt finished 1st Open C and Chris finished 3rd overall in Limited. Awesome! Great weather and a great range. Southern hospitality was shown to these northerners! Staff and sponsors were really friendly and helpful. Thanks!

Stages look good! Pretty straightforward, no frills, run and gun stages. It is going to be fun!

So I'm all packed up and ready to go to Alabama. I leave tomorrow at 3:30 am and should get to Alabama around 4:00pm to walk the stages. 3 GM's and 10 or so M's in Open. Looks to be some healthy competition! I hope I get to shoot without too much equipment issues. I think it will be a fun match! When I get back I've got some serious practice to do with the Production rig. That will be interesting!
  13. Ever thought about setting up "Can You Count" as a drill in practice? Maybe a Bill Drill?

Practice today was all about reloads. Started out with moving reloads, then worked on fast standing reloads. Great success. I finally broke the 1 sec reload benchmark. I didn't they were going so fast until the guy holding the timer told me. Good deal.

Practice yesterday was awesome! I haven't felt that good about a practice in a long time. Worked on a little bit of everything: Entry/exit, soft and hard exit, shooting on the move, near-far & far-near, and chrono'd my load. I am having some ammo issues. I think I'm experiencing some bullet setback because I am seeing pretty high SD over the chrono. So increased my crimp 0.001 and hopefully that helps. I pulled one of my old bullets, and I definitely was not crimping at all. I tried to chrono a new batch of ammo this morning, but I think it was too sunny to get good data.

I've got a plan to cure my urge to shoot Single Stack. Rather than shoot SS at the Indiana SS/Prd/Rev match, I am going to shoot a G17. This may not be a good idea, bit its going to be fun. I am unclassified in Prd, but that is OK. I think I have a buyer lined up for my SS, so that will give my some cash flow to build a new Open gun. I received my application packet for Nationals. I need to figure out how to get to Utah for a reasonable price. Going to practice this weekend a couple times, bring on the spring weather!

Got to the range today, felt great! Shot 200rds through the Trubor. I think its going to be good to for Alabama and A6. That's a bit of relief. I think it's going to be a fun year!

Well I bought a new frame from Phoenix Trinity. I decided its probably best to just start off fresh, rather than try to piece Frankenblue back together. There are a couple issues with that frame that are just not economical to fix. My gunsmith said he'd be able to start on it in 2 weeks. Realistically, I should have a new gun ready by the end of April. My Trubor seems to be shooting well. That's good news. Its still cold, but I've been going out to the range anyway Snowmagedon 10 hitting us Sunday, so I'm going to try to shoot a little bit tomorrow.

Here is my Florida Open Video. I think all but one stage is there, I had to restart the Dock stage (that stage had malfunctions too) Thanks Chris for the video, even if its painful to watch.
