  1. thx tac, as with most things, stay as light as possible?
  2. well the 2 manuals i have say to roll crimp, and how to line it up, and explain what it is, and why. there is information about not making it to heavy due to pressure issues and more. The question I was putting forth is about the die it self. I have not any experience with that type of crimp. I was trying to gather information from people with experience so i may further educate myself. More information on reloading is better than less.
  3. Iv'e loaded shotgun for years, and 9mm. I want to expand into .38 sp. My question is about the roll crimp. is that something the die does because its for .38sp, or is it a setting i need to learn about? I do understand it needs to be lined up with the cannelure, but i cant seem to find out how it happens in the die.
  4. for target practice in my XDm 3.8 Berry's 9mm (.356) 124gr RN 4.3gr WSF ( I have gone up to 4.7, but my wife didn't like to shoot them as much ) mixed brass fed small pistol primer's OAL 1.161 For me, clean, soft shooter.
  5. what i use for bunny fart practice for my XDm 3.8 9mm.. 124gr .356 berry's RN fed 100 small pistol primers 4.3gr WSF 1.161 OAL fun to shoot, was able to move my wife from her 22 to my 9 with this load, operates the gun well no jam's or any issues to report. just fun shooting, accurate, and clean.. meters well. I haven't had the opportunity to crono it yet . I would think it would work well in the G34 5.31 barrel. that's my WSF story. hope it help's.
  6. This is turning into a neighborhood party ... From work it wont be to hard to go there to check them out. Thx. The only shop i knew of here is CCS over on Rainbow and Sahara in the Harly center. Thx for the offer Jriera, Did you also stay at a Holiday inn? lol. but some things I need to have a shop look into, my breaks for example.
  7. I live in Las Vegas, i only know of 1 smith in town, he did a friend OK. I have heard of that trigger assembly being like the 1100's. Depending on cost a professional I can trust would be my choice. That is good advice about learning more about the gun and issue history.
  8. I have 2 guns that have jamming issues, both are relatively old ( a Remington model 58 shotgun with a trigger jamming, and a Remington 760 where the pump action jamms after firing ). I have never went to a gunsmith before so i have no idea how to shop for one. How much they charge, how to spot a quality one, ect. any advice would be great.
  9. Yeah, i like my ducks in a row. I hadn't concidered the bell, all-tho i think its minimal (by eyeball) ill revisit it. just to make sure. thanks for the tip. this has been a very productive thread.
  10. @sroe3 and others thx, I had a reloading session last night, i lubed the cases and it DID make a BIG difference. Numbers went down to +/- 0.002 with the odd one in here and there, and those weren't off enough to ruff my feather's. It was much better results. "i'm giddy as a schoolboy" . thx everyone.
  11. sry took so long to reply. I plan to shoot USPSA or IDPA but i feel i need to pratice up a bit. Im comfortable with long guns, but over this last year started with pistols. My local club here has events i attended a few and it looks to fun. but step at a time. Yeah i'm sure about my label's, my mentor said that it was most likely due to me being a bit nervous at 1st, then when things went well relaxing a bit. so my perceived recoil was different. thx again everyone for your help
  12. Thx, guy's. yeah, i'm loading on a Dillon 550b, this helps allot. I also (just today) measured some factory rounds, and found the same inconstancy that Mpeltier did. Of course id like mine to be better than factory. ill also try to lightly lube them. i haven't been due to the carbide die's. And it is mixed brass, Thanks for the warm fuzzy. When you reload for pistol competition do you generally try to use new same brand brass, and high quality bullets, or do most people use mixed brass and affordable bullets?. I can understand those measures taken for long distance rifle.
  13. Im using the Lee 9mm die set (christmas gift). the constancy of the bullet depth is always off by in the 1000th's for example ill set it to give a 1.161 OAL, and then ill start loading, some will be 1.161 OAL, others will be 1.164 OAL, or maybe a little shorter 1.158 OAL for example. i know it could be the bullets (berry's 124gr .356) . if there longer than the 1.161 OAL im looking for ill usually go back and re run them, and it will be better if not right where i want it. Is this something i should be looking to overcome, or is this normal? At the moment i'm just loading for target work. But eventually id like to load for competition so if its not normal. id like to nip it in the bud sooner than later.
  14. woo hoo After much reading, calling friends, and asking questions at Nevada shooters and here. I completed my first 9mm reloads, and successfully tested them today at CCSR (Cark county public range). All 4 of the loads i tested all went well, gun cycled perfectly, no smoke, no pressure issues, and 2 were very accurate with softer than store bought ammo recoil. It was allot of fun shooting my own loads. I'm now going to make a bunch of the 2 loads i liked best and work them to settle on one for target use. I did have a question concerning recoil. it seemed to me that i felt less recoil on the heaviest load, and the lighter loads seem to feel a little more recoil. I could just have been my perception. here's the load which was in my perception lighter recoil, and ill give an example of what i perceived as more recoil. 9mm berry's 124 .356 4.7 WSF mixed brass federal primers OAL 1.161 I liked this load same bullet 4.5gr WSF same primer same OAL this felt to recoil a bit more. I think it was that i was a bit nervous while testing which is why i perceived different things. It was too fun shooting my own stuff!!! thanks everyone for your help.
  15. I Have been following this thread, I too am new to cartridge loading (I have loaded shotgun for years). i'm loading the same bullet with WSF. The Hogdon website has their COL for a 124gr bullet at 1.169, but i hesitate because my Lyman book has 1.075 (for a 125gr HP) and i read many post of people loading much shorter that what Hogdon has. I typically shoot WWB thru my XDm 3.8 compact, as i measure that bullet it come's in at 1.158 (on average). I ran up some dummy rnd's and 1.169 was to long for my mag, i worked 3 of them to 1.161 which loaded well in my mag, fit well in my barrel (and my case gauge) and is what i was going to start with. So my question is what am i missing that i see many shorter OAL's. Don't mean to pirate the post, but it seemed a logical question that may help me and the OP. thx
  16. @Ceezer Concerning the Berry's bullets, I went to see what they had. and the cost is still in my range. their website say's to load them and the low to mid range of the jacketed load that my book's say. My Speer book and my Lyman book, and Hodgon's web site (for WSF) only show 124gr at .355. from other research, Loading a 124gr .356 to me that's in the lead range. So i'm a bit confused on that. Just wanting to know what your experience is.
  17. Thx, that's a good idea, about a trial pack. also thx mcracco i hadn't considered that . maybe ill revisit my smaller bullet plan.
  18. So far iv'e got some great information here, so i'd thought i'd go to the well again. I have loaded shotgun for year's, now i'm having a go at 9mm reloading. i like what WSF has to offer and i have lots of it. I'm loading for an XDm compact, target work only. i really want to use Bayou Bullets (147gr .356) i'm using Lymans book and the Hodgdon website for load info. i've posted before and got really good info, which took me to the use of 147gr bullets. any thoughts? My original path was taking me to the 124/125gr bullet. some additional reading and study has made me change my mind a bit. i'm hoping to get some more warm fuzzy's before i pull the trigger and spend my hard earned money on bullets. Thx guy's i welcome the input of experienced reloader's.
  19. Thx guy's, this is some good information. give's me more to build on.
  20. Hyya folk's, i'm looking to load some Bayou Bullet's they have the 135's which i here are great, but i haven't loaded 9mm before (i've only done shot shell reloading) so i'm going to start with their 124gr at .356. (I e-mailed Donnie and these is what he has i guess no more 125's) i really want to use WSF as i have allot of it. My Lyman book has load data for 124 jacketed and 120 lead. and the Hodgdon site has a 124gr lead at .355, and 125gr at .356, so i'm a bit puzzled. the Pistol i'm loading for is the XDm 3.8 compact for target work. from the books and what i read here and other places. i'm thinking at starting at 4.0 at 1.153 O.A.L.' and working up from there. any ideas or warm fuzzy's would be appreciated.
