  1. Thanks for the info. The only canted mount I have shot was on a super, and honestly it made the weight of the gun feel a bit off to me. As far as a combination of components go, that is exactly what I am looking for. I have had a chance to look and shoot a couple of 9's from some "named" smiths and wasn't necessarliy impressed. This is nothing like my Super days when weight was a function of personal preference. There seems to be a real balancing act going here between the weight on each end of the gun and even the loads. I was looking for someone who had gone through this and had some thoughts on what to consider.
  2. Ok, So in the five years I have been gone, the 9mm has taken over the local matches. I went to a local match to see how folks were setting up these new blasters and it seemed there were so many different configurations. Some with four port comps, some with three. Some wanted more weight on the front, some were using titanium comps. Some had a lot of steel cut out of their slides, some didn't have any. The only thing that most agreed on was that no poppel holes were needed with the reduced gas from the 9. I did get to shoot about three or four and only one kinda "felt" like my old Super. And that one (wouldn't you know it) was using a comp that's not in production any more. So, I ask you, if you were building a new Open 9, what configuration would you use to keep the gun from being "flippy"? Thanks Ahead of Time Dan
  3. Thank you very much Doug. I think that was the answer I was looking for. Dan
  4. Thanks for the info. Now, all I have to do is wait............'till UPS gets here.
  5. Thanks Rich, BUT, being from the South, sometimes I don't speak Anglish too good. What would you guess the heighth would be from the top of the receiver to the bottom of the scope? Just wanted to know if it's about an inch or so. Thanks.
  6. Derek, Yeah, I got that part and made sure I specified when I ordered. When I said 1" rings, I meant one inch high not diameter. Sorry about that. Do you happen to know how high the scope sits off the top of the rifle? Thanks.
  7. After reading almost everything here about optics (I think my brain is bleeding) I ordered a Burris XTR-14. I then ordered a LaRue SPR-E mount which I THINK had a number behind it (139). Does anyone know how high this mount will hold the scope off the top of a DPMS flat top? I was going to just order the 1" rings until someone some one said the LaRue mount would cook me breakfast on the weekends if I just forked over the additional bucks. Thanks in Advance. Dan
  8. I guess I will quit whinning and order......I keep feeling I've been had - again!
  9. Thanks GIO - So, now the question is do the DPMS mags work ok with the Armalite?
  10. I was looking to add a couple of mags for my Armalite Ar-10 before the new administration is seated in January. So, I figured that I would get the mags from Armalite so there was no fit and function problems. First you have to call them to order. Second, a 20 rounder is $45.00 and a 25 rounder is $54.00. So, do I need to get mags from Armalite or is there a better (cheaper) mouse trap out there? Thanks in advance. Dang It Dan
  11. E, S&W has some of the 10 rounders, but that's all. Midway said they would have the hi-cap mags in on the 17th of July - supposedly. They were about 30 bucks.
  12. I2Fast - Thanks for the info. BUT - I shot the Pro yesterday with 147 gr. hollow points with the factory sights. 4" high at 20 yards. I measured the sights and they "sit" at .190 to the tallest point off the slide. If I remember correctly, for a 5" gun, it takes .10 of sight to adjust per inch, which means I would have to have a front sight about .230 tall to get to zero at 20 yards. Dawson's tallest sight is .180, so I guess the only option I have is to custom make a front sight. I will be calling Kenny today to see what he can do for me.
  13. I bought one because of the price, but because I am pickie, I put another $300.00 into it changing out the trigger and the sights. Still under a $1,000.00 with checkering on the front strap so I don't have to have it refinished. Only have a couple of hundred rounds though it, but so far so good. The other three 1911's (one Colt, one Caspian and one S&W) all cost me over 1,500.00.
  14. SSS has several different grip inserts with different patterns on them. I was gonna shoot it for a bit and then figure out what grip to order.
  15. SSS is out of mags as of Thursday. I was going to replace the grip "cover" with one of the after markets unless someone else had an idea. No mag pads - this is gonna be different! Anything else of use would be appreciated.
  16. Thanks to everybody. I have a holster from Comp-Tac coming. Still need the mags so I will have to look around. What about fine tuning..........besides the trigger, what else should I do?
  17. I think by the time I get ready to shoot, the M&P Pro will be approved - hopefully. I don't know about the mag-pads. I need to actually read the green book.
  18. Hello All, It's been a long time since I shot USPSA. Fast forward 10 years, I would like to shoot in the Production class but I hate buying the wrong stuff so I am looking for a little advice. And yes, I understand that a lot of this is a personal choice, but it would be nice to at least get a reccomendation or two. First, I already have a S&W M&P Pro coming. I already have a holster. What I need is: Source for mags, mag pads, and mag pouches. AND.....what to do to the gun to make it "right". Trigger work, of course, but what else? Any advice would be appreciated. Dan
  19. Ok, Have a Pro coming in from Bud's. Have a holster coming in from Comp-Tac. Where can I get four mags and the right mag pouches? Dan
  20. At a gun show in Lakeland, Florida. One of the really big distributors had it on the table at $699.00. A little too high for me, but you might try Bud's Gun Shop.
  21. Hello All, I am having a tough time locating a Pro, but did run into a 9L just last weekend. I was wondering was the extra money worth holding out for a Pro? Thanks. Dan
  22. Hardball, Out of all the things you posted, #7 worries me the most. You took some time off, yeah we all have, but we came back because we have a "drive" to be here. Something about all of us needs to be here for any one of many reasons, but we all have an itch that needs to be scratched. I wonder if you are really ready to come back. When your drive leaves you, usually you do too (i.e. Joe Kessler). I would first examine if you really want to be here, or if you just think you should be here. No offence Bro, just an observation.
  23. Well, "D", After reading all the replys, good as they are, you are probably still thinking just exactly how do "I" do it. The answer is, you have to deal with it in your own way. Sorry, that's the way it is. All of the suggestions here are really well thought out, but they only mean something to the author of that particular idea or suggestion, and some of what they say may apply to you, but I guarantee you that every one who has been in the position to win but blows it, thinks about it for a long, long time. During that period of time, each and everyone of them (us) will come up with something that will help themselves next time. And, you will too. Read, listen, think. Something will hit home for you if you work on it long enough.
