  1. I have an RL 1050 since 1999, using dedicated toolheads, to swap toolhead, case feeder, shell plate and case plate, around 30 minutes (does not include bullet feeder, I just have one in 9mm that is attached to one toolhead). Changing priming system, another 20 minutes. I have toolheads for 38SC, 40, 45 and 223. Does not include changing swage rod which I only use when I am dealing with a big lot of crimped brass.

  2. I was working downtown Chicago, so had the same problem, I moved with an L-1 Visa and it took from July 2007 to May 2010 to get my green card.

Basically, I stopped competing for 3 years, it sucked. If you live in Wisconsing the commute by train is going to be 1 1/2 hours ;(

I had no option because my wife worked in Northbrook (30 min north of Chicago) and the commute from Wisconsin would have been too much. By the way, O'hare is not far away from Northbrook. I don't think there is anybody you can talk too, it is a state law that to even touch a gun in IL you have to have a FOID card if you are a resident of IL.

Indiana is closer, cheaper and friendlier with respect to guns and CCW. I had some coworkers that lived in Indiana. Check the Metra website, and see the frequencies. By car is probably better coming from Indiana than from Wisconsin as the commute is terrible going north.

Tried applying for the FOID and was rejected 3 times, once I had the green card, no problem.

Importing the guns is not a problem, check ATF website, apply for the Form 6. I moved with a truck and they did not even look at the guns once I declared them and showed them the ATF paperwork. There are some Russian / Chinese firearms available in Canada that cannot be imported to the US.

I WOULD NOT TRY TO DO THE IMPORT / DECLARATION OF YOUR GUNS IN O'HARE, THEY WILL KEEP YOUR GUNS AND MIGHT WANT TO PUT YOU IN JAIL FOR NOT HAVING A FOID. Do it by land in Windsor / Detroit or Niagara Falls and DRIVE. Once you enter IL without a FOID, if you are stopped (try not to be) just tell them you are heading to Wisconsin....Once you have an IL drivers license that trick will not work....

For legal advice, try talking to ISRA (Illinois State Rifle Association), I am sure they can recommend someone.

  3. Have a VIP in 40. all holsters that work with a Glock 19 or STI Eagle will work, I started with a Crossbreed for a G19 but now I am using the Comtac Infidel for the STI Eagle. Dimensions are almost identical to a G19 but substantially heavier (steel frame).

When I need some trigger time on it would shoot the occasional IDPA macth with a Comtac OWB competition designed for an Eagle.

  4. I went from a 550 to an RL1050 with Mr. Bulletfeeder, I load 38SC, 9x19 and 40,

Reloading is a PIA, so the faster I do it the better, as someone mentioned, 100 rounds in six minutes is easy. The big advantage is the additional stations (for example for 38SC: station 1 38SC Dillon die, station 2 EGW undersize die) and doing all operations in the down stroke.

  5. I just bought a FAL, and want to start reloading for it. Possibly shooting it in 3gun Heavy Metal.

I have no experience reloading rifle but have been loading pistol on a RL 1050 for the last 18 years, RL 1050 can't reload 308 so what would you experienced 3 gunners recommend? a)bite the bullet and go for a Super 1050 (already have 4 toolheads and caliber kits) or B) go cheap for a 550 and use it for 308 and load development?

Also, carbide dies? Dillon or other combination? Do I need a case trimmer?

  6. Reading with interest this post, as I am in a middle of a relocation to Miami, will be working downtown Miami.

Is there any indoor range that holds local matches in the downtown area during weekdays?

Any Club closer to downtown than Markham Park, where one can go and practice (meaning using my holster, timer and a couple of targets)?

  7. Yes... cloudy days are much better for chrono accuracy, but can be done on sunny days when you properly shade the sensors. If you use a camera tripod to mount the chrono, you can also use the tripod's tilt feature to lay the chrono over 90degrees away from the sun and shoot through it like that. I always get good readings that way when the sun is directly overhead and I don't want to mess with taping something to the skyscreens which generally has to be larger than even a USPSA target is to properly shade both sensors completely.

Thanks for the tip! I used the technique and it worked perfectly:

    8.8gr avg 1350 hi 1375 lo 1322 PF 167

    9.0gr avg 1365 hi 1384 lo 1346 PF 169

  8. So I was lucky enough that the sky was overcast. Results are more consistent.

Using MG 124 g out of Shuemann Tribrid II with winchester SR primers and armscor 38 supercomp brass. OAL 1.235. IMR SR-4756.

    20 rounds through Prochrono Digital:

    8.5g AVG 1306 HI 1333 STD 12 161.9 PF

    8.6g AVG 1323 HI 1340 STD 14 164.1 PF

Primers show no sign of pressure.

    Next step 8.8gr and 9.0gr
