  1. I've shot a couple thousand now. Zero 115c give me 1/2 inch groups at 30 yards, PD give me about an inch at 30 yards. For our sport, that's better than good enough and it's a good savings. By the way, the POA and accuracy is repeatable... Something I can't say for plated bullets. I am not shooting anything else now given they have excellent pricing!

  2. Absolutely agree. And I have shot with him running his comp design and before I knew who made his comp I asked him who made it because his gun was soft, flat, and ran like a sewing machine... Was kind of cool when he said it was his design... So I can attest it works very well and looks great!

I love all this info, but HATE it when people get rude.

Really no need to do anything but ask questions, or reply

    to questions with YOUR experience.

No reason to get personal or rude, IMHO.

Eric has been a member for the past eight years, and has

contributed some excellent ideas in that time - I personally

    look forward to his contributions.

And, I've heard some excellent reviews about his comp.

Lot of personal opinions on this particular subject - no

reason to criticize someone else's opinion.

And, Eric has not become rude in response to rude

    postings. :bow: :bow: :bow::cheers: :cheers:

  3. Thanks. Like you said, it wasn't the spring tension. But it did help. Flyer is 2 inches high at 30 yards, the rest cluster in half an inch. This isn't that bad, so after the South Carolina I'll have to take care of it. Thanks for the follow up!

It wasn't tension (springs) it was the extractor itself moving forward and back in the channel. My firing pin retainer plate was cracked as well.

  4. I shoot mostly 9. Depending on the batch, you'll have good ones and bad ones. The issue is that if I shoot 50 rounds out of my 9 major open gun, 124 hp, 45 of them will group into less than 2" inches at 25 yards, and 5 will open up the group to 10 inches. With zero or other jacketed billets, all 50 go into one raged hole. The issue really is is that one flyer the one that gave you that mike in that stage with targets out to 25 yards, or was it you? Lol. If you can't trust the bullet, don't use it. By the way, for 9mm 115g, if you buy 2k or more, they end up cheaper than extremes 115g.

Extreme needs to lower the price for the quality they sell.

  5. It not only separated on major loads, it created errosion in my chamber! Was shooting area 6 and l needless to say, took a 0 stage because of this. My load cronoed at 173 power factor. Freedom and ammoland making us major shooters sort the brass. Get rid of it or load minor with it.

  6. yeap i hit plateau at 7.4 giving me 165 PF, anything more and PF goes down... and something funny - last week it was 30 degrees and was at 165 PF, today was 75 degrees and got down to 160 PF, then increased to 8 grains and got 155PF... so i guess this is no good... will try 135 grain bullets... perhaps that works...

  7. 9mm doesn't set back, ever, so no need for a U die.

Dude, you better do some research on that. I can go to my press right now, stick in my Dillon sizer and put a MG 124 in an FC case and push it about 1/8" in by pushing it against the bench. Thinner case walls.

Yes. I get major setback under recoil. I had wild flyers and found out the my 1.160" was being set back to 1.140! Just ordered my egw lee u die.

  8. Ok. So we all know that played bullets should not be crimped. I discovered something amazing today. The case bell is the ultimate differentiator. I did 50 rounds with the case mouth belled to .391 and 50 rounds belled to .371. What did I find?

With jacked bullets, no difference. With plated bullets, I did 10 5 shot groups at both bell sizes. Load at 170 of with extreme 115 and 124 hps... The .371 bells had an average group size of about 3 inches with 1 or 2 fliers that opens the groups beyond 5 inches.

The .391 bells had 10 5 shot groups that averaged 2 inches... Not a single flyer out of the 50 rounds!

Crimp was at .3775 on the average.

All these months trying to understand why sometimes I had accurate played loads and sometimes horrible. Now I know: no crimp and case mouth bell to .391.

The hypothesis is that opening the case mouth more minimizes played bullet damage while seating. Pretty simple. Same hypothesis of crimp damaging the played bullets.

Give it a try and let me know if this is the case in other guns also.

  9. FYI for all you competitive shooters. Recently came across a great trigger from Hiperfire, look up the reviews online and you'll see this is one of the best ones out there. I was able to feel one at a match and definitely one of the best I've experienced!

Kudos to Hiperfire for this level of innovation, definitely something we want to see in this industry and hobby! I've also got to know that Hiperfire sponsors our sport, with shooters getting these at the prize table. We need more companies like this!

Having said this, I've found sellers online that are providing these triggers at significant discount. The question I have is, are these legitimate and backed by Hiperfire? If they are not, apart from not knowing exactly what we will get, are we supporting the innovation AND sponsorship to our hobby we get from great companies like hiperfie?...

If in doubt, ask Hiperfire if they are a reputable distributor....

    Thanks and happy trigger time!

  10. I ordered 115 xtreme thick plated to try. I got 1 inch groups at 35 yards at 170 pf. So I ordered 3000... I get 10" groups now... I bet they tried to reduce some cost in material by marking the bullets softer in the second batch I got. Interesting part is that up to 20 yards, it stays within 2 inches, but at 35 it opens up to 10". My zero 125hp give me 1" at 35 yards.

The latest batch of xtreme 115 is .3545. I also have 135 fp xtremes that are .3555, these are giving me 2" at 35 yards... Once I finish my extremes, going back to zeros.

  11. After reading through the posts again, I realized that there may be some misrepresentation on my experience with Freedom Gunworks – It needs clarification.

First: Bobby at Freedom has always given me the right advice; even go out of his way answering facebook questions I had regarding general guns. He takes his time with customers. The experience building the gun was also great, taking his time and providing valuable guidance in the build process.

Second: The Freedom gun I have right now is a gun a friend of mine from Argentina asked me to do for him through Freedom. Given that the paperwork is taking a long time, I have it in my possession and shooting the heck out of it, per his request. When I got the gun, it was really tight! And would have malfunctions. When I contacted Bobby he immediately guided me away from the new SVI magazines. He was right on that the new SVI magazines don’t work well with STI frames (lot of that in the forums also). When I went to the STI magazines, per his advice, the gun worked almost 100%. But then, I never contacted Bobby about not running 100%. I figured my friend would have the paperwork done any day and wanted to ship it to him as soon as that came through. My bad on that as Bobby is always there to take care of his customers.

Third: The culprit of the malfunctions are most likely the recoilmaster my friend requested in the build. On custom guns with tight tolerances, the recoilmaster is not the best spring to break them in on as they are weak in the lockup part of the cycle. The second part of the malfunctions was that I tried running two springs in the aftec… Bobby had told me to run one until the gun was broken in – again, everytime I contacted Freedom, I had a solution and answer – great experience.

I can see how people can be misguided from my just mentioning of the malfunctions, without giving the full detail of everything around it. I am 100% confident that if I called Bobby, he would make it right. He is no nonsense and very direct person, with integrity. Not only as a gunsmith, but he is an entrepreneur that cares about his customers.

My intention was not trying to start a pissing contest or have people that like their gunsmiths start a “Enos” pissing fight. Some do this as a living (I wish I could – that would be way cool), but me? I do this to make friends and have fun – that’s what this sport is about. So if I started some kind of pissing contest, my apologies. Both Bobby and Brad are great people and gunsmiths – even Porsches have minor issues, but when they do, they take care of you, just like Bobby and Brad.

  12. Hello: A good looking gun that goes bang every time, what else can you ask for! Thanks, Eric

Yeap! all guns have their own personality. Love the light handling shorty by Hardy, the slide in czechmate, the ion bonding on the Freedom, etc... Sooner or later all go bang or the are sold.

The cerakote finish was actually a big surprise... Would have thought that aesthetically would not be good as the ionbond, but it's looking good!

  13. To be honest, the lightning cuts have been around for ever... Cheeley, Freedom, Gans, etc... have been doing them for decades.

Two of the 3 you listed, have NOT been around for decades, do not mislead people

You are right... Both Cheeley and Freedom are relatively new comers. While the cuts have been around really long... Sorry about that - not trying to mislead anyone...

  14. In terms of reliability, I'm awestricken... every single open gun when new has had malfunctions in the first few hundred rounds (if not thousand), something like a couple malfunctions every big stick... The blackdog had 1 malfunction in 400 rounds...

Congratulations on your new gun! However, in terms of reliability, out of three new guns that I had, two were perfect straight out of the box, and one had very minor issues. And I don't think my experience is unique.

You are absolutely right! My 1 out of 400 failure may not have anything to do with the gun, could have been the reloads I was using. So I can say my Blackdog was perfect.

I can't say the same for my freedom gun... It took nearly 1 year before I get down to one failure every couple hundred rounds.

  15. Range report:

Just got back from the range and tested my Blackdog Gunworks gun... What I like to do to test overall gun balance and speed is plate racks at 12 yards... the average of 10 strings was 2.8 with my best at 2.6 with my previous open gun, and the Blackdog did average of 2.6 with the best at 2.2... that is amazing! as far as accuracy, it did not like my Xtreme copper plated bullets, but it may have been my crimp. With Zero JHP it did consistently 1" or less at 30 yards... that means that if I were on a controlled bench, it puts one bullet on top of the other.. can't ask for more than that! Brad did a phenomenal job fitting the gun together... By far the most accurate gun I have shot so far, the Freedom gun that I have is a close second in terms of accuracy. You can see from the pictures which is the plated bullets... those were really spaced out, but again, that is likely crimp as my Freedom gun also had groups like that with that load.

In terms of reliability, I'm awestricken... every single open gun when new has had malfunctions in the first few hundred rounds (if not thousand), something like a couple malfunctions every big stick... The blackdog had 1 malfunction in 400 rounds... I did 200 slow rounds... then I loaded 4 big sticks and 6 normal sticks and fired them as fast as I can... taking a couple minute break every 2 mags... amazing... brass all fell within a radius of 2 feet of each other about 8 feet out! Now the only thing I have left to do is to start shooting matches.

The only thing that will need some breaking in is the lockup... it's so tight that I have to put some energy in racking... but it only has 400 rounds. I will take some videos next... so far I can't be happier!

  16. Is Brad friends with Bobby, or just have a man crush on him? It's not so much that the cocking serrations/lightening cuts are the same (although on this gun he reversed them) or the name and how and where he machines it into the slide, but if you go to his webite, his web page is set up the same way and his build sheets are the same too.

***** nevermind, there must be a connection, they even use the same front site cut picture on their sites

To be honest, the lightning cuts have been around for ever... Cheeley, Freedom, Gans, etc... have been doing them for decades. I can say that the reverse serrations I haven't seen before, as neither the Ballafiore rear cut... I have a Freedom gun in ion bond copper - also beautiful gun, but not as elaborate - attached is a picture of my freedom gun... To be honest, the Freedom gun does not function 100% and I can't trust it - The blackdog gun in the first 400 rounds has had one failure... but I attribute that to being new. The Freedom had a malfunction every magazine... Bobby told me that it was the magazines... I changed to STI and improved a lot, but had to re tune the ejector and firing pin stop angle... after that it runs 99%... that's one malfunction every 100 rounds... the average weekend match is 180 rounds... I get one or two malfunctions... still after 5k rounds... may be normal... may not be normal...

So going back to the who's design is it... the serrations? I don't know who invented it... but I'm sure that it was before Bobby's time... the Bellafiore cut? That's Brad's... the reverse serrations? I've only seen them in Brad's guns... The modified Cerakote mix? Brad's...

And yes I think Bobby may have influenced Brad, and that's fair... But Bruce Lee's master was never as good as Bruce Lee, else we would know... No need to start a gunsmith pissing contest - all are good when they personally work on the guns... I know Brad works on every single one of them... the rest of the gunsmiths? Not sure. That's why I went with Brad... If you don't like Brad, that's a separate topic.

    Thanks
