  1. I've got this great idea that might allow Sam and me to hit both the Summer Blast and Area 7/AWARE matches on consecutive weekends this summer. Checking the airlines, I see a good deal on nonstop flights in and out of New York LGA, and I'm seriously thinking about booking the tickets.

My idea: Fly into NYC on Saturday morning, drive to Pennsylvania that day, shoot the Summer Blast on Sunday morning, do all the tourist stuff with the family around NYC and maybe Boston during the week, shoot A-7 the following Saturday, drive back to NYC on Sunday and fly out Sunday evening.

My concern: I don't want to violate any gun laws in the process.

Is this feasible? What do I need to know?

I can look up the statutes on Westlaw at the office tomorrow, but I'm just as interested in hearing from those with first-hand practical experience on how all this crap works. I've been gone from the northeast too long to remember much, all my old permits are expired, and there have been a lot of changes in the laws in the meantime.

(I've actually managed to sell my wife and daughter on this concept, gotta figure if I can get that task done the rest should be fairly easy....) ;)

You could look into flying into Allentown or Harrisburg PA. They are smaller airports (compared to Philadelphia, New York, or Newark). In any event, I'd avoid flying into NY/NJ if it were up to me.

  2. This really drives me crazy. Whenever I put in an audio CD to copy tracks, one of the internal software audio players automatically starts to play it which I don't want. I have to waste time waiting for it to get it's brains before I can close it and get back to work.

Is there any way to stop PC's from autostarting garbage I don't want either at turn on or insertion of disc?

I have another player that fires up every time I turn on the PC whether there is a disk or not.

I'm sick of these stupid programs promoting themselves to essential.

I would rather have them set up for "call when I want them".

    How?

You might want to check out the 'AutoRuns' utility by SysInternals. They were bought by Micro$oft but the utility is still free. You can find it here.

  3. Hi all,

We are a family from Michigan and we're considering the following major matches for next year:

    Targeting Ed

    MI Sectional

    OH Sectional

    SC Sectional

    Summer Blast

    Area 5

    Area 6

    Area 7

    Area 8

    and KY State Match

    Here's the question:

Are there any you'd recommend over these or some that are more fun than others. Any that you wouldn't plan on.

    Thanks for your input

There is the 'Little Big Match' in Cortland NY.

  4. Hank,

I like your post but disagree with you that SSD should stay and that L10 should go. Any gun that works for SSD can shoot L10, but not every gun that shoots L10 can shoot SSD. I also think the argument that a new shooter with a 1911 won't comb back because he might need to buy a few 10 round magazines is incorrect. If $125 in magazines (5 10 rounders) is a deal breaker than the sport just isn't for you. Most of us spend more than that to shoot an Area match (entry fee, ammo, gas, food).

I have noticed that most new shooters at our club shoot production or limited 10 because they are the two 'non-race' divisions that a majority of guns fit into. We have only had a handful of shooters ever shoot SSD at our matches. The guys with 1911 patten guns tend to shoot L10.

    Eric

  5. How much are clubs willing to spend on a scoring program for handhelds/palms?

I do software development for a living and occasionally do freelance work with a few coworkers. I'm sure we cold build software for less than $5 per shooter per match, but the real question is how much are people willing to pay?

If there is enough interest and it would be profitable, I'm sure we could bang out this project.

Of course, if only 3 clubs would use the software and they only want to pay $19.95, it isn't worth our time.

  6. If we allow .355 as major in Limited and L-10, we add 3-4 rounds to the maximum capacity of a 140mm magazine. This will change the sport and immediately obsolete all .40 cal guns. much as the advent of the doulbe stack .40 pretty much eliminated the .45 as a competative gun in Limited.

Yesterday at Topton, one of our shooters was shooting his Glock in Limited, with extended mags, he loads 24+1 vs my ability to load at best 21+1. He didn't need to reload, I did. On a tight COF, this will make a difference.

A perfect example of the problem with the sport focusing on equipment races. Limit all pistols to 10 rounds in the mag and this levels the playing field extensively.

It isn't OK to obsolete current Limited .40's but is OK to obsolete all capacity challenged .40's & .45's that are not 1911 pattern guns?

My original proposal was to 'pee in the pool' of limited shooters and by way of their complaints make the case for limited 10. If capacity isn't a big deal, it isn't a big deal. Maybe Limited .40 could be a category?

Leave things the way they are now and lets just shoot.

  7. A 2 pound glock trigger is no more or less safe than a 2 pound 1911.

Of course, playing devils advocate, a 1911 has a thumb safety and a grip safety. A glock as a little lever on the trigger called a 'safety'. Besides, change/race your glock all you want - in Limited or L10 - it just (arguablely) isn't a production gun anymore. Oh yeah, a 1911 with a 2 pound trigger isn't allowed in production either.

  8. I would be really pizzed off to have to buy a slide and barrel. IMO this would be the worst thing to the sport you could do.

Short of making us wear scuba fins to shoot in.

OK, I'll say this before this thread goes too far. I made my 'Modest Proposal' (see Jonathan Swift) as a bit of satire. I guess I need to work on my sense of humor. :P

Anyway, the point I was trying to make is that a seeming innocuous change can bring about a major change to the sport and to have a few posts from Limited shooters about the need for capacity in that division. This is the same reason I think we need to leave Limited 10 alone. It gives shooters with capacity challenged guns a place to race without being at a disadvantage. All the limited shooters who read my proposal and thought 'that would suck...I'd need new gear.' now know exactly how L10 shooters feel when it is suggested they just shoot limited.

    Eric

PS Open is Open. Its the Formula One/Top Fuel of USPSA and anything goes. We limit Open to 9mm because if we didn't people would be shooting .17 caliber Open guns with 35 rds.

You cannot apply logic that if Limited is .40 then Open is .40 because of this.

If Open is Open, anything goes, right. Why not let .17 caliber guns shoot if they may make major? Of course, that might be hard on steel. :(

  9. Changing it would require a whole new arms race costing competitors hundreds of thousands of dollars. There is no good reason to change it, other than they'd all be the same, and one really expensive reason not to change.

But, but, but guns aren't investments? And no one said you have to change. You can keep shooting your 40 Major. A few rounds capacity difference shouldn't be a problem if you practice your reloads.

  10. Eric,

It makes a >MAJOR< difference to the game.

On a COF with many arrays with good spacing, it makes less difference.

I strongly am against allowing for 9mm Major in Limited and L-10

    Jim

OK, How about we make Open Major .40 @ 165?

  11. One of the items that has always struck me as unusual is that the definition of 'Major' depends on the division. In Revolver a .357 @ 165 makes major. In Open a .355 @ 165 makes major and in Limited and Limited 10 a .40 @ makes major. Shouldn't they all be the same?

It doesn't matter much to me if we make Limited .355 @ 165 or Open .40 @ 165 but the definition should be the same. I know that this would cause some gnashing of teeth, but the new 2008 rule book is the time to make the change. It would simplify the rules and treat all the divisions equally. Also, if we allow different bullet sizes to make major, couldn't we have different power factors for major as well?

  12. And since there are hi-cap mags for the CZ's available now, why not just shoot Limited? If you're in a ban state, then shoot the same gun in Production minus the magwell and when you shoot a match out of state, back to the hi-caps. Or if the magwell, which apparently is a HUGE must have allow that if a manufacturer sells a gun in that configuration then it is allowed (establish a higher than normal production run numbers to eliminate random configurations).

Your right there are high caps for the CZ 75 based 40. They hold 12 rounds. With a base pad, maybe 14. The gun isn't competive in Limited. Neither is an XD in 40 or any number of other guns that started out life as a 9mm platform. The geometry of the magazine is all wrong.

And don't tell me limited isn't about capacity. We all know it is. Look at all the posts about how to get that 20th round into the magazine or posts about spending $$$ to get someone to tune the magazine so it runs stuffed with bullets, a modified follower and a base pad.

On the bright side it looks like L10 is back for now by one vote so it might be around in 2008. Just remember guys, check out how your area director and the USPSA president voted and remember when the next elections come along.

  13. L10 is shooting on a budget? Hmmm....the price difference between a STI/SVI vs. a 1911 of similar performance. The frame ('cause you're gutting everything else) and the mags (which aren't that much cheaper since you can buy 10 round mags from STI/SVI). Race gear is the same. Where is it cheap?

    Rich

CZ75 SA in 40cal with 5 mags, magwell, grips and sights from Anguswill set you back all of $700. Can't touch an STI for that price or a 1911. Same with an XD 40 - you add sights and a magwell and your ready to race in L10. There are lots of guns other than the 1911/2011.

  14. C - As for believing that you have to do invest in full race rigs, that's why there's Production. So, you can bring out your Glock, Beretta, SIG, CZ, et. al. And sorry, if a magwell is going to be the difference between you shooting and not shooting ('cause you can still change what's important...sights, trigger and barrel) then don't play 'cause you don't get it anyways. It's not about having the same equipment as the next guy. It's about improving yourself as a shooter and just so happens that you stomp the hell out of the next guy. :D

    Rich

That is one of the problems. Invest in Limited or Open or no cool toys for you! That is a great way to attract and retain new shooters. ;)

As I see it, and I could be wrong, one of the advantages of L10, even for shooters in non-restricted states, is the ability to 'race' on a budget. You can do all the cool things that Limited does with you gear, you just can do it with more reasonably priced guns and magazines. Of course if the only important changes are sights, trigger, and barrel maybe Limited should be 'limited' to those. And if your old Limited gear isn't legal - just shot Open with it. It not like you be at a disadvantage or anything.

  15. Folks - Are there any alternative baseplates for factory CZ 75 mags? I'm not looking for extra capacity (though I'd take it), just a way to be friendlier to the seat in my F150 - the spare mag's base plate is tearing it up. Failing that, what's a good base pad to use?

    TIA!

You can get rubber base bads direcf from CZ-USA that fit both the CZ and MecGar magazines. They are a bit hard to fin, but they are there. I think they are $8 each. I use them on all my mags.

    Eric

  16. Singlestack, I voted to keep it as a category in L-10 or Production (doesn't matter). It doesn't need it's own category.

L-10. While the "need" for it is slim to none with the sunset of the AWB, some folks like the 'challenge'. However, since the winning guns are 1911/STI/SVI/Glocks, et. al. that are available as hi-cap guns, why would you still want to shoot it. Just an opinion.

    Above everything, quit adding divisions.

    Rich

I don't know, does anyone really need 16-20 rounds in a gun? Maybe we shoud just have Production, L10, and O10. Even if it isn't a matter of need, why do you want to pee in someone elses pool. If you don't like L10 don't shoot it.

Of course, there are also a whole bunch of guns that are great for L10 that would make poor limited guns du to capacity issues. It might be hard to get sponsors/advertisers if there are only a handful of competive guns guns to capacity.

    Eric

  17. Yes there is a concerted effort to remove L-10. When the votes are posted you will see that.

But the more pressing issue is you are in direct conflict with Eric about the L-10 elimination, what should be done? Both of you can't be accomodated, that is clear.

    Gary

I don't think Jim and I are far apart at all. We both want rules stability and L10 to stay around. I don't care about Single Stack anymore - one way or the other. It will be available at the matches I run and almost no one will shoot it. Fine.

At my club the vast majotity shoot Limited, L10,and Production. I don't know what the L10 guys will do if we take their division away.

So why do guys shoot L10? Some live in round restricted states. Others shoot guns that just are not going to be competive in Limited. An XD 40 with a mag well is a great L10 gun, buteven with extensions it doesn't have the capacity to play in Limited. Same with a Glock 21, CZ 75 (40 cal), or 24/7 Pro. Others just like cheap mags that work and don't want to play in a division that requires extended base pad, tuned magazines, ect to be competive.

Limited, because capacity matters, is dominated by only a few designs: STI, SVI, Para. Glocks (22/35) can play and CZ has the Tatical Sport designed for IPSC. Thats about it. Yes, there are oddbals out there, but by and large choices are limited. The other problem is that, even if we can afford it, some of us can't bring ouselves to sped $100 on a magazine and 'upgrade' parts to get the needed capacity.

I know the argument from some is take you cheap guns and play in production. No race holster or mag well for you! Oh, your gun is a 40 or 45? Too bad - you are scored minor; reload light loads. Oh, your just starting out and don't reload? Sucks to be you.

Leave L10 alone. Add other divisions if you want. Just don't complain that competition is deluted.

Don't forget, the guys who get screwed by the elimination of L10 might not stick around. Around my area we have an active steel challange leage, some ICORE (maybe more if some match directors get pissed off by the rule changes), IDPA,and outlaw run-and-gun matches. Guys can shoot just about every weekend and never send a single match fee to USPSA.

Just something to think about. Are we so concered about getting new blood that we just might chase away the guys and gals we have?

  18. It is fairly easy to criticize, it is slightly harder to offer realistic solutions.

    Gary

    Gary,

What I don't understand is why we need solutions. We have a rule book that works pretty well and divisions that accomidate the vast majority of shooters. Other than a few clarifications and tweeks I don't see the need to change things just for the sake of change.

It has also been suggested in this thread that if you don't like the way things are, run for office in the next elections. That is a bit drastic, but ok. How about we have a proposed 2007 rule book and elections before it is adopted. As long as everyone running is up front about their positions, at least us unwashed masses will be heard with our votes.

I have already contacted my Area director with my opinion on the desire to drop Limited 10 and Revolver. I couldn't care less about Single Stack since almost no one shoots it at my club. If they do, I'll check the box in EZ WinScore.

  19. For goodness sake close this IDPA bashing thread.

I don't think it is about bashing IDPA so much as a concern that some on the BoD appear to want USPSA to become IDPA like. If you enjoy IDPA, great. Shoot IDPA. Just don't change USPSA into IDPA since IDPA is already out there.

(It was before my time, but didn't IDPA form as a break away from IPSC for almost the same type of BIPSC vs Practical arguments that have been discussed in Front Sight and on this forum.)
