2007 Midwest 3gun Championship And More...
jimstc replied to CMMG's topic in Multi-Gun, Rifle & Shotgun Match Announcements
I must be missing something here. Is it 7 stages with the following round count?: 152 pistol 52 rifle 59 birdshot 8 slugs How can this take 3 days of shooting? I must have missed something because this looks like a one day shoot. -

2007 Midwest 3gun Championship And More...
jimstc replied to CMMG's topic in Multi-Gun, Rifle & Shotgun Match Announcements
Is it possible to get some definative facts on the match? Hello CMMG what is the format? What days do we shoot? What is the round count? Heck, I can stay home and practice for a lot less than this mystery match. JimStc -
What primers are you using for this cartridge? Anyone loading with H322 ? Thanks, Jim

3 Gun Shoots
jimstc replied to Leadfoot Anny's topic in Multi-Gun, Rifle & Shotgun Match Announcements
Where in Indy ? I want to go. JK We have monthly matches at the Atlanta,IN Conservation Club on the fourth Sunday . The last match round count was around 200 with 5 courses, two of which were Multi gun. The club is about 45 minutes north of Indy. For directions or more info go to our web site. Do a search for our club name. If that doesn't work e-mail me at bocakona@aol.com. Your trip will be worth the time.http://www.atlantacc.net/index.php Website added Jim -
I have a Les Baer 1911 that is fitted for two barrels: 9x23 and 38 Super. I just had a 9mm Nowlin barrel fitted to the slide. Today I shot a 3.9 Titegroup,130 gr Ranier load through the gun and it ran and shot great. I then shot a 3.5 Titegroup, 147gr Montana Gold load and it would not cycle. I put a Wolff 12 lb variable spring in the gun with the same results. I think the original spring was a 16lb variable but my memory fails me. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jim

I set up my 650 today to load .223. Dillon sizing die, powder die and crimp die. Redding seating die. Once fired LC brass, sized and case checked. Sierra Match King .224 52gr HPBT. I got the OAL at 2.245 and ran the round through the crimp die. I then did a set back test and , without much effort ,drove the bullet into the case. After checking my die set up I repeated this four more times. What am I missing?? Thanks, Jim

Well, it is winter in the Midwest so I thought I would start loading .223. I load 5 pistol calibers and assumed rifle loading would come easy. Umm, was I ever wrong. I am loading on a 650. I have tons of brass that was originally Lake City factory that I bought and shot through my rifle. I followed this thread and generally followed the advice given. I bought Redding dies, a Gracey trimmer, the necessary Dillon conversion stuff, a Stoney Point bullet Comparator and .223 insert ( which I cannot figure out how to use ) and off I went. Well, the Redding dies don't make sense. I bought the 3 die competition set which is comprised of the Bushing Style Neck Sizing die ( I guess this is supposed to neck size and deprime ) , the Comp Bullet Seating die ( I use this with all my pistol calibers and am good to go with it ), and the Body die which I think is a full length resizing die. When I bought the set I somehow thought this was the crimp die. So, I do my caliber conversion today and size and deprime some brass. Next to the Gracey. Umm, no trimming. Back to the Gracey instructions and I realize that it will only work with full length resized brass. I then run all the brass throught the body die which is at station 5 on the toolhead. Back to the Gracey and it works great. All brass at 1.75. Questions: 1. Based on the consensus of this thread, I need a crimp die. Where does the body die go if I put the crimp die in station 5? 2. Doesn't the body die replicate part of what the Neck sizing die does? But it doesn't deprime and yet it is necessary for the Gracey. 3. Any and all advice is much appreciated. Thanks, Jim

Thanks for the responses and the education. It really helped my understanding of the fundamentals. Jim

I bought a Simmons Pro Diamond for my AR and didn't get along with it. I went to an EOTech and felt that it had real shortcomings on small targets over 50 yds. I then started researching scopes and ended up with a Leupold Mark 4 CQ/T 1-3 14mm scope. I like this scope as it does well in close and out to 150 yards. The scope is on a 16" barrel setup. I also have a 20" HBAR AR that needs a scope. I have again researched scopes for longer distance shooting ( prairie dogs , NRA highpower ) and am as confused as usual. What do these terms mean ? : 1. Eye relief 2. Exit pupil 3. Field of view at 100 yards 4. 30mm vs other mm 5. 1.5-6x 42 I have tried to evaluate an S&B 1.5-6x42 30mm scope and a Swaroski 1.5- 6 x42 30mm scope and I honestly don't have the basic understanding to make an informed decision. As usual, thanks for the education, Jim

Consistent Case Gauge Failure

sfinney, I will be ordering an EGW undersized die tonight. I have been considering that for some time. Thanks for the advice. Jim -
Consistent Case Gauge Failure
jimstc replied to jimstc's topic in Dillon Precision Reloading Equipment
George, I followed your process of elimination. I sized a fired cartridge and gauge checked it and it failed. I then lowered the sizing die and tried again. The case passed. I then belled it and seated a bullet and crimped it and it passed. I repeated this several times with continued success. Conclusion: even though the sizing die was tight to the tool head somehow it wasn't still fully sizing the case. Go figure. Again thanks to everyone for the advice. Collective wisdom again triumphs over singular stupidity. Jim -
Consistent Case Gauge Failure
jimstc replied to jimstc's topic in Dillon Precision Reloading Equipment
1. I have fired this brass through a Brazos SC and a STI Edge. 2. I fired all of the brass that failed the case gauge during practice this afternoon and only four failed to cycle. I don't think it is the gauge as I have used it for several years but it is interesting that the barrel is more forgiving than the gauge. Today I shot the Edge which has a Schuemann Ultimatch barrel. 3. Checked the sizing die and it is tight to the toolhead. 4. I will be checking my Front Sight for the article mentioned. Thanks for all the advice. I will update as I figure this out. -
This morning I loaded 300 rounds of 40 cal on my XL 650. Upon completition I did my normal case gauge test with a 90% failure rate. The brass is Winchester or Starline and it is not range brass. All of the brass has been through my gun at least once. When I drop the round into the gauge it stops at about 1/4 inch from going in all the way. Before I start taking dies apart I thought I would ask for advice. The dies are Dillon with the exception of the seating die which is the Redding comp. Thanks, Jim

This thread was started on the assumption that a Dillon 550 was being used to load .223. Are there any different suggestions if a Dillon 650 is being used? Thanks, Jim
-
You are right. $90.00 is a small cost considering the support DPMS provides to 3 Gun. I guess I hadn't considered that. Ordering Tuesday. Thanks for the reality check. Thanks, Jim

I have a complete upper: Bushmaster 20" HBAR bbl in a DPMS Hi Rider flattop with a Miculek comp and a Leupold Mark4 CQT scope. It also has no iron sights a DPMS 4 rail gas block and Clark carbon fiber free float tube. My question is : What lower?? I have looked at Rock River and DPMS and the DPMS is about $90.00 more expensive. Is there a reason to pay more?Granted ,$90.00 isn't that much but I hate to spend more than is necessary. Thanks, Jim

Post script: After 700+ rounds it will cycle anything. Low recoil, max dram it doesn't make a difference. War the SX2!!
-
Thanks to everyone for all the advice. I decided upon the Clark carbon fiber. They are great to work with. Special thanks to Jim and Renee. Jim
-
Renee, Most 3 gun matches here in the Midwest are at ranges under 100 yds. So light weight is generally desirable The handguards on my 16" bbl DPMS upper are 7" +/-. Which Clark Carbon Fiber model would fit this ? Thanks, Jim
-
Jake, I agree regarding the DPMS carbon fiber handguard. I'm thinking that is where I may end up as I don't mount anything on my handguard. Nice shooting this Sunday BTW. Jim
-
Dave, Yes for 3 gun. I was also looking at the DPMS Carbon Fiber tubes. They look like a good value. My upper is a DPMS. Are you in Louisiana yet? Jim
-
What do you recommend ,and why, for free float handguards? They will go on a 16" barrel upper and a 20" barrel upper. Thanks, Jim

Thanks for all the feedback. It is a new gun with both gas pistons and I am using the one for light loads. Great point on the full power slugs. I will be using those for matches now and burning up the other stuff for practice. The gun has less than 100 rounds through it. I will get some different ammo and run another 100 rounds through it and see what happens. Thanks, Jim
