  1. Hey all,

One thing that has interested me about you guys that shoot in the 3 gun games is the guns you use, the mods you have had done to them and why you picked that one over all the others.

I'd like to ask you guys a different question and see where it goes.

Lets say for the next 3 months you HAD to shoot all of your matches with a shotgun that was completely STOCK except for a magazine tube of your choice. No other tweaks or workk allowed.

Which shotgun would you choose to use and why?

I think this will be interesting reading now that there are several great choices being made by different companies. Let's see.

    Thanks for your time.

  2. Hey all,

I come here every now and again and read up on the goings on and such. I enjoy seeing what you guys are talking about in the sport and where it is going and the equipment and such. The only negative I have about this section is that there aren't very many pictures of the shotguns you all are using or are testing. I know that most people don't post pics and you guys are smart and knowledgeable enough about the gear that you all don't need a picture. There are lots of us like me, that have never shot or seen a 3 gun match and would like to try it someday, that enjoy seeing the guns and gear that you all use especially when it is a NEW SHOTGUN out on the market.

So, I thought I'd ask and see if you all wouldn't mind posting up some pictures of your gear. I know I'd like to see it and I bet a lot of others would to. It would be even better for you to describe what you have and the mods done to it and why you are using that particular shotgun. Even if you don't post a pic, that other info would be interesting to read for a lot of us to understand things a bit better.

Some of the ones I'd like to see are the Remington VersMax, the Beretta 1301, the CZ 712 and of course the usual Benellis. Naturally if you are shooting something different please post those too. The MORE the MERRIER.

Can't wait to see and read all about your gear.

    Thanks for the time.

  3. Hey all,

I just looked at the VersaMax ZOMBIE and Tactical versions and they look really good. Someone told me that they have a system very much like the Benelli M4 that allows them to work well with all kinds of shells. Is that true?

Then I came here and saw that Beretta has a new competition auto in the 1301. That also looks like a nice semi for gun games. How is that one turning out to be? Is it a viable choice or no?

Are there any others out there that I am missing?

Now, with these new semi-autos coming out, are any of them on the level of the Benelli? Do you all see any of these others being on equal footing with the very popular Benelli autos?

If we are talking BOX STOCK, will all 3 of these basically perform equally as well?

Any info you care to add would be great.

    Thanks for the time.

  4. Hey all,

I have a Benelli M1 with a 21 inch barrel. Right now I am wanting to set it p for HD use and later on I want to try some of the 3 gun matches. I've never shot one, or seen one, but have always thought they looked like a lot of fun and want to try it.

I am going to need a mag extension. I think a +3 or +4 wold be fine for me. What brand do you recommend I get? I don't have to have the absolute best tube there is, but I don't want junk either.

I would then get a barrel and mag connector.

My gun is stock so after the mag extension what part(s) would you recommend I get for it? I am not looking to build a race gun, just a good HD shotgun and one that I could go out and play in the 3 gun games every now and again.

    Thanks for the help.

  5. I understand the fear that some people have about the 922r restrcitions.

I had an interesting conversation with the head of the Cincinnati ATF office several years back. I called to ask about some gun laws and such and we got into a discussion. This was in the Assault Weapons Ban and HI Cap Mag Ban days. LOTSA liberals crowing about how they finally were going to make the streets safer. This ATF guy I talked to was a senior guy, I don't know how high, but he wasn't a fresh out of the academy agent. He had been on the job for over 20 years. I thought it would be a great time to ask about the AWB and the HiCap mags and see what he thought.

I asked him what he would do if he and his pals were at the range and right next to him he saw a guy come in with what he KNEW were ILLEGAL HICap Magazines. He said he would go over to the guy, introducce himself and explain to him that he was using magazines that were illegal and then urge him to dispose of them. I asked if he would arrest him. He told me he would not. In fact he told me that since the law had been enacted (been on the books several years) he had NEVER seen nor heard of a SINGLE ARREST or PROSECUTION of anyone for an illegal magazine. NOT ONE....in the entire nation that HE knew about or had ever been told about. He said they have charged bangers and dopers with the violations simply to tack on additional charges and time for them after they had been busted on other gun and dope charges.

I would be willing to wager that 75% of active BATFE Agents couldn't tell you what 922r even entailed or prohibited. Even if they did know about it, you think they're gonna walk up to you on the range and demand to inspect your shotgun wherupon they totally disassemble it to verify how many parts are made in America on your foreign made shotgun?

Am I encouraging anyone to disregard it, no. You do what you want with your own firearms. I'm just saying if I had a foreign made shotgun like a CZ712, I would have no problem at all putting a mag extension on it and rigging it out to whatever specs I was wanting for Home Defense or 3-gun. I would also wager that out of all those tricked out Benelli shotguns at the 3-gun matches all over the country every weekend, there are more than a few that ARE NOT 922r compliant and their owners aren't losing a wink of sleep over it.

To each his own on this issue. I tip my hat to you for complying with 922r on your shotguns and advising others to be aware of it too. I just think that most people would chose to go ahead and build their shotgun the way they wanted anyway.

    Thanks

  6. Hey all,

I used to think that the best shotgun to get to play all the cool games was the Mossy JM 930. Then I find out by reading some posts here that they have fallen out of favor and are not thought of very highly any more.

So I thought I'd ask and see what recommendations come up.

Lets say someone comes to you and says he is tired of watching and hearing about you having all the fun and he now wants to join in. He already has a handgun and rifle and needs a shotgun. He asks you what shotgun he should get to come out and play. He doesn't want a USED gun, doesn't want to save up for a few more months to get a BENELLI, he doesn't have the cash to call SALIENT for custom work, what's a guy to do?

Seems there are 3 choices based on what I have read in threads here, see if you concur.

    1. Mossberg 930JM at about $700 or so.

    2. Stoeger 3000 at about $435 for the shotgun and maybe $100 for mods like a proper extension, better sights, or whatever.

    3. CZ-712 Utility. Don't know the current price, but probably less than $425. Add in another $100 for goodies and you're ready.

From what I have read and seen here it seems as though the current choice would be the CZ712 Utility. They look to be pretty highly thought of and reliable. You don't need a lot of gunsmithing work to get them running right out of the box. If you get one and you don't like 3 gun, you then have a heck of a nice home defense shotgun or get a spare barrel and use it for sporting clays, hunting or any other numerous shotgun games and activities.

CAUTION....Don't listen to me, I have never shot a single round in 3-gun in my life. I'm just a lurker, trying to learn what I can. The REAL EXPERTS will hopefully be along shortly to set me straight and correct my mistaken claims.

SO....those of you that are EXPERTS, what shotgun would YOU recommend your best pal that lives next door to you buy to get involved in 3-gun? Is it one of the models I listed, or do you have another suggestion?

Thanks for the time and I can't wait to see what answers come in.

  7. I must be missing something. I am not a 3 gun shooter, I just come here to read and learn about the gear. I'd like to try it someday though.

Anyway, a lot of negative talk about the Mossberg 930 platform here. It surprises me cause I spend a lot of time on other boards where the people just shoot for fun and no competition, but they do shoot a lot. I have read hundreds of posts of the last couple of years about the 930, particularly the SPX version with the 18.5 inch barrel, 8 shot version. After the initial problems of the sights being canted and a few other issues that seem to have been resolved, these shotguns are talked about in glowing terms. I rarely see a negative post about them anymore. The owners go out with Wally stuff and shoot the whole box and love it. In fact I see people bragging on their performance every time someone starts a thread on one.

Am I missing something? Is the JM version built with different internals than the SPX version?

I recall a few months back when Benny was here talking about the upcoming JM version from Mossberg, many people here literally couldn't wait till they could get one, now they're junk? Guys were tripping over each other to get to the phone to put deposits down on them.

Now you have a guy that comes here wanting to join in all the reindeer games and is wanting to get a JM version to play. He's told, FORGET IT....Don't waste your money, keep saving till you can get a Benelli at double what he is wanting to spend.

If there is a total stranger that came here and is lurking to try and find out about maybe giving 3 gun a try, he just got the message that he need not come to the safety meeting unless he's packing 5K in gear. It just seems to me, an outsider looking in, that you guys would want AS MANY PEOPLE as possible to come out and enjoy the sport and have them understand that you don't need a 1000 dollar shotgun to have fun. Just the opposite is the message being sent though.

  8. A local dealer has a 21 inch Benelli M2 NIB that I handled 2 days ago. I think the price was around $1100. If you are interested, let me know and I'll pm you the contact info.

  9. Hey all,

I have an M1 that I recently swapped barrels and put a 21 inch M2 barrel on. I had to Dremel up my forearm to get it to fit, but it's OK now.

I am wondering how well the M2 forearm would fit on my M1 receiver. The guys at Benelli told me today that it too would have to have some fitting work done on it to get it to fit properly. I have heard different things about this and would like to know if anyone can tell me for certain how well it will fit before I spring for one.

    Thanks

    Nalajr

  10. Hey all,

Now that I have my long awaited 21 inch barrel and the forend modded to fit, I now am thinking about what I can add to it to make it a better HD shotgun. That's the role of this shotgun for now, that and some range play. I am not ruling out that I hop into the 3 gun stuff later on or probably early next year.

I know I need a mag extension and the barrel clamp that goes with it. Should I get one that has a rail to mount a flashlight? I also want a different bolt handle, I like the looks of some of the ones I have seen on here. Which ones do you all like and use? I'll probably get a BIG safety too. I don't know about a side saddle. Will the added weight affect reliability or is it a non-issue? If you recommend one, which one should I get? My M1 is NOT drilled and tapped for the side saddles that mount that way. I could get it done, I guess, but do I need to? And lastly, I'll probably want to get a sling.

I would appreciate your input on what accessories I should get and where to get them. I would like to go all out and get the primo stuff, but right now I have to watch the budget a bit, if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the help with everything.

  11. Hey all,

I have an M1 Super 90 and I just traded for a 21 inch barrel off of an M2. The thing is my forearm isn't fitting. Can someone tell me if all I need to do is sand the inner surfaces off of the forearm until the barrel will lay down in it comfortably? Is there anything else I need to do? It seems to be the end that fits next to the receiver that is not letting the barrel lay down into the forearm.

    Thanks

    Nalajr

  12. EkuJustice, I have read and been told that the 3-gun shooter prefer the 24 inch barrel by a wide margin compared to the 21 inch. Since I have a 24 inch and was wanting a 21 inch, I thought that would mean getting into a 21 inch for my 24 inch would be no problem at all. I thought I would have plenty of offers, but that isn't the case. In fact I have never got a single message from anyone interested in swapping. I've had a few wanting to buy my barrel, but no trades at all. I don't think I'll pursue that course any longer. That's what started the thinking about the VersaMax Tactical trade or a trade for something else like a Peacemaker, but that is highly unlikely as well.

As of now I will more than likely keep my M1 unless someone makes me an incredible offer to trade something I have wanted for a LONG time. I've never had the chance to shoot clay targets and right down the road there is supposed to be a state of the art facility that has Sporting Clays, Trap and Skeet. I think I am going to go check it out and if the price isn't too bad, I'm going to get out the M1, lightly clean and lube and then have some fun at the range trying to bust some clays. If that happens, it will be the first time that Benelli has been fired in probably over 10 years.

Thanks all for your help and advice.

  13. Thanks all for your suggestions.

The only other trade I have been tossing around in my mind is trading my M1S90 for a Colt Peacemaker. I have always wanted one and never had the chance to get one. Those 4 3/4 inch Peacemakers are just beautiful, especially in 45 Colt. I wouldn't care what finish, but I believe I would have to add some boot to get into something like that unless I found a Cowboy that just wanted to get into 3 gun shooting. Hard to find a deal like that though.

In the end, I'll probably end up keeping my Benelli. If I never find a 21 inch barrel for it I'll just go over to the really nice Clay Target club down the road and get me a membership and try that out with my M1 and the 24 inch barrel. I've always wanted to try those clay target games too. Then I'd just get me a dedicated HD shotgun and all's well. In fact, that sounds like the best option right now unless a Peacemaker came along. If one did, I'd have to do some serious thinking on it.

    Thanks again everyone.

  14. Hey all,

I was having a chat with a buddy of mine the other day and we were talking shotguns. I don't compete at all, but might like to try it in the future. I have a Benelli M1 Super 90 with a 24 inch barrel, it's mint. I have been looking for a 21 inch barrel to trade for, but haven't been successful and am thinking of going a different way or maybe trading it for something I have been wanting like a Peacemaker or something else. Well my buddy mentions that I should check out the new Remington Versa Max Tactical. He tells me a bit about it and I go and check it out. Looks like a really nice tactical shotgun. I haven't read any detailed reviews, but some of the stuff I have read looks to be pretty darn positive. So I started thinking a bit and doing a bit of math.

Would you trade a M1S90 with a 24 inch for the new Remington Versa Max 22 inch Tactical? If I were able to find someone I would most likely be looking at a trade for a USED Remmy as they are pretty pricey NIB. I don't know what they go for used, there can't be that many of them out there on the USED market yet could there?

If given the choice, which one would you rather have, the M1 or the Versa Max and why? Can anyone tell me a bit about the Versa Max and if it is as good as the Benelli M1 is. I would be using it as a Home defense and fun on the range weapon and maybe sometime later this year or next, give this 3 gun stuff a try.

Just kinda thinking out loud and would like your thoughts on it, if you don't mind sharing them.

As an aside, how does the Mossy JM 22 inch version compare to the Benelli autos like mine?

    Thanks all

    Nalajr

  15. Hey all,

Been looking around at the Saiga 12 gauge shotguns and wondering why you 3 gun guys don't use them more often. It seems like it would be a better choice than the Mossy's, Benellis and the rest of the semi autos that are so popular. They would definitely be faster to reload and you could carry more rounds. When every second counts at your level, why are more of you not using the Saiga? Is it in a different class than what you regularly shoot in? Does the class that the elite shooters fall into allow the use of Saigas or is it strictly semi autos like the M2 and 930?

Just wondering. I don't know much about the different classes and such and trying to learn a bit.

    Thanks

  16. Hey all,

I see that some of you like to post pics of your shotguns and gear. I enjoy seeing all the different shotguns and what you all are using and how you have them set up.

I'd like to get this thread going with pics for lots more with their shotguns and gear. So how about posting pics of your scattergun and talk about what you have done to it and how it's worked out for you? I don't have one or I'd get the thread off the ground. I do enjoy seeing your gear though as it gives me ideas as to what I'd like to have.

So if you don't mind and you have them, how about posting pics of your shotguns and other gear that you use?

    Thanks for the time.

  17. Hey all,

I ran across this pump shotgun while on the site looking at the Rock Island Armory 1911 pistols. Here it is if you want to see it:

    http://armscorusa.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=23&Itemid=69

It looks like a pretty decent shotgun that's priced low. It is a 5+1 with a 20 inch barrel. I would like to know whether anyone has any experience with these shotguns and if so, what do you think about them? One other thing I am curious about is whether you could add a mag extension to it, say a +2. In looking at closer pics on Gunbroker it looks like there isn't a retaining nut on the end of the magazine tube like on an 870 or a 590. It looks like there is just a cap type of retainer. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd like to know what you all think.

Could an aftermarket mag extension be used on it?

How good is the shotgun and is it worth it for the money as a HD shotgun and an entry level novice shooter for someone that would like to give these 3 gun games a try?

    Thanks for the help.

  18. Hey all,

I have never shot in any of the gun "games." I've wanted to shoot in some IDPA and some Glock Shooting Sports stuff, but never have. Until recently I didn't live anywhere close that had nice ranges that had these kind of things. I am also intrigued by 3 gun shooting and would love to try it sometime, but don't know if I could do it or would be permitted because of my limitations.

Here's my problem, I can't run or walk fast. I also can't shoot prone or even crouched very low. I have a permanent spinal disorder where ALL of my vertebrae are fused together. My spine looks just like a stick of bamboo if you see it on an XRAY. I have NO DISCS left in my spine at all. I can't look up and have very limited side to side head movement. As an example, so you can kinda see what I am talking about, if I lay on the floor on my back, the back of my head is about 6 inches off of the floor. That's as close as I can get to lying flat.

Now, I don't know if a match director or safety officer would even allow me to participate with the limits I have to deal with. I wouldn't blame them if they told me I couldn't. I'm not worried about winning anything or beating someone, it'd be great fun for me just to be able to try it.

What do you all think? Do you think I'd be able to participate in 3 gun shooting matches? I am in the Houston, Texas area so I am pretty sure there are ranges that have these kinds of matches, but I haven't checked.

    What do you all think?

    Thanks for the time.

    Nalajr

  19. I am not a 3 gun shooter, but would love to try someday.

I have been reading through this thread because I own a Benelli and because I wasn't familiar with the Vinci. After looking at it I can see what you all are saying. The idea that one of you had about making a Vinci package with interchangeable barrels and the extra mag extensions is really cool. I agree that they are not utilizing this system to its full potential. You know they could find a way to make this project come to life.

Think about it, you are able to buy a Vinci set that has say a 21 inch barrel and a 28 inch barrel with the 3 xtended mag tubes and then make some different sighting options available like a rail that can be mounted on top to mount an optical or ghost ring rear sight and still be able to have your standard light gathering tubes for hunting and clay sports and put all that in a cool, sturdy travel case and you'd have all the bases covered for damn near any shotgun sport you played. You could even have a home defense barrel thrown in there too at maybe 18 inches that could also give you a slug option for deer hunting.

I think it's an awesome idea and would sell like hotcakes if they didn't price the darn thing at $4000 or something crazy like that.

In fact I can't believe Benelli hasn't already done something like this or is planning on it in the near future. Such an innovative company, you'd think they'd be on top of these things.

I think it would work if any other top shotgun maker done it too. Mossberg could easily do it with their 930 auto too.

    GREAT IDEA.

Then again maybe they don't want to make something like this because if they did why would you need to come to them for any other shotgun needs? Gun owners don't need many excuses to buy more guns though whether they need them or not, but that may be what they think when presented with a great idea like this.

    Nalajr

  20. Hey all,

Just for curiosity I'd like to know what you all think the best inexpensive AUTO shotgun.

Some of the ones I have seen mentioned are the CZ-712 and the Stoeger 2000.

    Any others?

Which one would you buy if you were going to use one in your next match?

    Thanks

    Nalajr

  21. Hey all,

Anyone have any pics of the final version of the new Mossy 930 Jerry Miculek version? I'd like to see some pics of both versions. I have only seen the video of the 22 inch and it does look good. I'd like to have one and I don't even shoot in these 3 gun games, though I'd like to try it sometime.

    Anyone with pics please post.

Also, what do you think the STREET PRICE will end up being?

    Thanks
