Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I run coated lead 124 gn lead proj in my open gun at major with 8.7gn vv3n38 under them. My gun has around 25000 of these through it over 2-3 years, I've never cleaned the comp. There's a little lead at the bottom of the comp, but not much. A couple of times I've checked the "bore" of the comp as back in the day with non coated lead bullets you would sometimes get a slight build up there which could cause accuracy issues, doesn't seem to happen with the coated bullets. I have a 90 mounted c-more, I give it a wipe after each stage in a match, but in training it will take 100+ rounds before I realise it needs a clean... These bullets group 2"@ 25m off a sandbag, I can see the dot moving a little so I think out of a ransom it would be one ragged hole. Other coated bullets won't group out of my gun, so the right match for yours may take some finding....not sure if this is case with jacketed. I made the mistake many years ago of switching to jacketed for a major match(to be "better'), this when major was at 175.The higher pressure caused by the jacketed proji's pushed me into flowback issues, and a trashed match.Think I was running 10.5 gns 571, I did test before the match but.....oh well.... I never notice any smoke when shooting.
  2. Hi folks, Having a hard time getting hold of 10 shot 38 super mags for my new STI rangemaster, as there are very few USgun shops that will export to Australia, and none in stock over here right now. I have found some metalform 1911 10 shot mags for 9mm(in the US). Does anyone know if these have a spacer at the back of the mag I can easily strip out and merrily shoot supercomp? Metalform list a nylon follower for the super 10 shot mag and a flat follower for the 9mm...I shoot supercomp so I'm thinking take the spacer out of the 9mm mags(if I can), and flat follower may be OK, given supercomp is rimless? Any thoughts? Anyone tried this? Thanks.
  3. I started shooting IPSC in Australia the mid 80's and we had some pretty wild times. One "funny" incident comes to mind. Back then , we had a rule(not sure if it was local rule only)that police officers and security guards could use their issue rig, many of which exposed the trigger.... So this particular day we had a little speed shoot set up, and security guard Mike makes ready, with a 38special revolver in an exposed trigger holster, set just behind the hip and raked rearwards. I was standing about 10 ft behind Mike and had a good view of what happened next.... The buzzer sounds and Mikes hand flashes to his revolver, there's a boom a bit earlier than expected.....Mike has managed to shoot himself in the bum!! The projectile went in the top of his bum cheek and came out the bottom(same cheek...) , Mike had a decent size bum so most of the force was spent by then and the projectile rattled down his trouser leg and was later found in his boot... Immediately after shooting himself, Mike loudly observed "I've shot myself", and collapsed faintly into the arms of the R/O, who caught him beautifully. Mike patched the hole in his jeans and wore them proudly to shoots for years afterwards, always ready to tell the story to any newcomers who asked about the patch. His main regret was that just before entering his bum cheek the projectile had ploughed it's way through his favourite tobacco pipe, which he had stuck in his back pocket just before fronting the line.....
  4. I bought my sidewinder new in 1986 and it's never missed a beat since. The plastic on the tumbling drum has got brittle with age though, and the end is nigh, with a couple of bits breaking off recently. I sent some pics to RCBS in hope, asked the question re guarantee and guess what....they are sending me a new drum free of charge, no questions asked, no hesitation and said they were real happy to be of help! The drum retails for $106.95 and I'm in Australia, so freight would be at least $50- on top...to replace via a retailer here would be around $250-. Awesome service for a product I've had for 26 years and wasn't even faulty, it just wore out! I have no RCBS connection other than as a very happy customer, just giving credit where it's due.....
  5. I'd try a Caspian.I've owned 1911, STI,Para and Caspian and I had to get rid of the Caspian, grip was just too big for me, the rest are all fine.
  6. G'day Randy, That's the setup I was keen on, but I'm advised by a GM(who would be in anybody's top 10 list of open shooters worldwide)who tried the micro that he found it too small for IPSC/USPSA, and not good for moving targets like swingers.
  7. Thanks G-Man. Yep I had read those posts, was just searching for a little more. Well I reckon I will run with a c-more mounted at 90, the extra clearance around the ejection port is also a big plus.
  8. Has anybody tried both on an an open gun in both practise and under match conditions? I'm having an open gun built and have to decide....would appreciate comment re target/dot acquisition, indexing, vision generally and so on.. Aimpoint + Quality build(submersible to 15ft) Mounts low Small "footprint on gun" very bright dot Aimpoint - 4 moa dot smallish tube size(does it matter??) c-more +(90 degree mount) mounts low big dot/choice of size no tube(does it matter??) c-more - mounted at 90, scope body may effect field of view/indexing to left?? slide racker needs to be big to clear c-more = risk of catching on clothing/props aesthetically challenged/unbalanced look Why so many c-mores, so few aimpoints? c-mores simply better aimpoint have hands full with military sales, not chasing uspsa/ipsc market Aimpoint cost? Thanks in advance for any comment/advice.
  9. G'day all. I'm in Australia and my gunsmith is starting on my new open gun(38supercomp)in about 8 weeks, so it's decision time. Problem is, the only comp I really have access to over here is the tru-bore, or get the smith to do a one-off. I'm going with the tru-bore, with full length slide lightened to around 10 1/2 oz and the S-2 comp. I have 2 questions and would really appreciate any advice 1)Any thoughts on having the one piece tru-bore barrel/comp turned down to a cone style to lose a bit of unlocking weight? 2)Has anyone tried putting some side ports in the new S-2 comp, as in Brazos style?Did it make any difference? Any opinions on this as a mod to the S-2? We make major at 160 over here and I'll likely be shooting a 120-125 gn projectile with a powder we have here ADI AP100(burn rate about the same as SR4756, marginally faster than HS6 and 3N37) Thanks in advance
  10. Here's one. Tony, That is a beautiful press. (I'm just in the process of buying a Star universal to load supercomp myself.) Is that a Mr bulletfeeder? Does it work OK with the star? Any issues/tips in setting a bulletfeeder up with a Star? Thanks in advance for any advice. Congrats on your setup, must be close to the ultimate! ps I've loaded probably half a million rounds on a 1050(and the same again on 550/square deal/green machine and single stage) and the 1050 is a fine machine but IMHO, the star is at a whole different level... Cheers Geoff
  11. Those youngsters are missing out.Well, I've just ordered a full set of super dies from Dave, I really appreciate your help on this. Can't wait to get to work on the star, looking forward to that as much as the shooting.I've been spending time on the star forum also, great resource.

  12. Yep, I'm in Australia all right.A place called Busselton in South West of Western Australia. How do the hordes of Dillon guys in IPSC view your Stars, surely many must be quietly envious?

  13. Yep, that runs about the same as the CH-4D set which is $190-.I've sent Dave a msg so hopefully he will ship to Oz, thanks for the heads up on how to order. We are on a similar path Art, I'm waiting on a custom 38supercomp, can't wait to load on a star and plan on the moon indexer and case flipper, dillon case feeder, adj pwdr bar and maybe even a Mr bulletfeeder..Cheers

  14. Hello again Art,

Thanks for your advice re the Hulme, now I have a question re .38super dies.

I've tracked down a carbide CH-4D set of dies brand new, but I notice you have a Dave Wilson set.

Have you any comment on Dave's dies vs CH?

I'm wondering which way to go?(and feeling lucky to have a choice!), though I'm not sure if Dave will ship to Australia y...
