Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Yeah. Its hard to describe. I was shooting both loads at exactly 134 PF. The WST felt like a small firecracker going off in your hand, which is something I haven't felt with Solo, n320, titegroup, clays, or e3. It was distracting and my bud had the same reaction to it. Both of us agreed that Solo 'felt' better in the two 2011's we were shooting. It was butt @ss cold out there so we didn't do anything on the timer, though. I'm probably going to lower the charge weight and shoot it around 125-130 PF for practice until its gone. I'm shooting Bear Creek 147 Molys at 1.18" You and I are definitely not comparing apples to apples. That may explain the difference. How many grains of Solo are using for your load? I've been using Solo for my .40 and really like it and would like to work up a load for 9 with the same 147 bearcreek molys
  2. Two years ago I would have agreed completely about Irons being better for three gun. However the last year or two I'm seeing a lot of 4 inch plates with the handgun at 20-35 yards. 4" at 35 is challenging with a pistol. More so after shooting the other two guns for a minute or two. I definitely agree with Flex about the mount from SJC, but they don't have one that works with the Delta Point just yet. I've been emailing John and Steave about getting one made. The only downside is holstering the gun. I don't know of any holsters I'd trust for 3 Gun that can be used with the SJC mounts. I had to make my own. That is my main reason for wanting to do this build. As my eyes get older I'm having more problems with the more challenging targets for both pistol and rifle. I'm ready to move to open so I can have a bipod and multiple optics on my rifle and a dot sight on my shotgun for those 50+ yard slug shots. Also it seems like 2/3 of the competitors are in tactical optics division and most are 30 years younger and run faster than me!
  3. Yes, this will be a dedicated open gun. I didn't know if the 31C or 35 might have been better suited for major 9 loads than the 17C? The more I research this subject it seems shooting a major load may be more beneficial to get better performance from the comp. I see several barrel and comp options from SJC, Lone Wolf, Carver, KKM to name a few. If I go with the 17C and major load which barrel and comp combination would you choose? Also looking for trigger recomendations ZEV, Carver or ?
  4. I'm going to build a new open division pistol for 3 Gun competition and I want to use one of these three guns that I already own: Glock 17C, 31C or 35(all Gen 3) I am planning on shooting 9mm minor with a comp'd barrel (no porting) and a Leupold Deltapoint optic mounted on the slide. My goal is to be able to use a kydex holster and to keep this gun as simple and reliable as possible. I would also like to use this for shooting steel if that makes any difference and may someday want to shoot some major loads. I will also install an aftermarket trigger and related internal parts as well as a magwell. Which is the best gun to use? The 17C and 31C are just collecting dust in my safe but I have shot 35 a few times in Production and IDPA.
  5. Getting ready to build a .308 AR for Heavy Metal 3-Gun. Since I live in California I'm limited in my choice of lowers. Looking for recommendations: Brand? - have seen CMMG and Fulton locally for around $350 but I'm not familiar with those manufacturers. Armalite or DPMS pattern? From what I have read DPMS pattern appears better because of magazines? I have several AR-15 triggers (JP, Geiselle etc.) that I would like to reuse if possible.
  6. I agree, wouldn't think of running the gun dry for USPSA but being a "gamer" I do it in IDPA. I have a 4" M&P9 and have noticed that it too will go slide forward with a hard mag insertion, and this has worked well for me as the stock mag release was almost impossible to use to drop the slide. I've since very lightly honed the slide release notch in the slide and it works much easier but it would be much better with a slighty larger release. Well yesterday in a local match I had my first failure to strip a round off the mag (high cap)and indeed it really bites you in the butt. I can't trust it anymore so I guess I'll have to treat it with a little more respect when doing reloads.
  7. http://www.botachtactical.com/elcanspecterdr.html One would be wise to do a little research on Botach before ordering from them. SWFA would be my suggestion. Also look at their samplelist page. +1 on that. Shop anywhere else than Botach
  8. Thanks for the explanations. I just purchased a Larue SPR mount in anticipation of ordering one of these but was not sure which reticle to get. Sam
  9. USO could certainly put this reticle in their 1.5-6x but because the reticle is in the rear plane, the stadia tree only works accurately on one power setting. I could see issues where shooters would not want to go all the way up to 6x due to mirage or stability issues and they dial the magnification back a bit. If they do this, then the stadia tree will not accurately work on the longer range small targets at the reduced power setting. That's the trade off between first and second focal plane scopes. First plane works on any power setting but the reticle zooms up and down with the power setting. The second plane reticle stays the same size regardless of the setting, but it will only work accurately on one power setting. I think Chuck's sentiments are dead on. Having more magnification does not make a long range shot easier. It only brings the image closer. It will increase the size of target in the scope but it also magnifies your wobble zone which can really make it tough to get hits on distant targets. I think anything in the 1-4 or 1-5 range is perfect. I defintely wouldn't want anything stronger than 6 and even if I had 6 I would rarely use it. 4 or 5 power is plenty for anything we have to shoot. Erik Just getting back into 3 gun shooting after a 8 year layoff and trying to get back up to speed on what current equipment trends are. I'm used to shooting with an Acog and an offset red dot so I'm not familiar with using adjustable optics for 3 gun. So if I am understanding your reply, the reticle magnifies (gets larger) as you increase magnification? Is this an advantage or disadvantage when shooting 300-400 yard targets? Or do you have to leave it set on 1X to get full benefit of the reticle? Sorry for the multiple questions
  10. Any plans on putting this reticle in the new 1.5-6x version of this scope? Do you think the additional magnification is needed for 3 gun matches in general or would you stick with the 1-4 version?
