  1. has anyone installed the rear adj dawson sight? Is it the way to go for competition and different loads?

That is a logical solution, however the feedback I've seen on the Dawson adjustable has been mixed. (LINK) Also, you have a .305 front sight.

just for kicks, I measured the rear sight at .253 and the front .181 on both guns, anyone else measure their sights.

I haven't had a chance to yet, but others have posted similar info previously (LINK)

It appears from all the postings and different vendors websites that the M&P9L/Pro comes equipped with a .180 tall front sight and the M&P9 a .160 tall front sight. My M&P9L doesn't shoot as low as some others in this thread, but I would like to have POI 1-2in above POA at 10-15yds. I fortunately prefer plain black instead of fiber optic so I think I'm going to give a .170 tall front sight a try and see if that gives me the POA and POI I prefer.

  2. I must say I was quite impressed with the first episode. I was a little leery based on some of the excerpts I'd seen on YouTube, but the show was very well done. Looking forward to see how they handle the rest of the season. I believe the show is slated to run through Dec.

  3. I checked the sight and could not identify a make or model, sorry. One other route you might consider is swapping the #8 Dawson front sight for a #9 Sig front sight or a #9 Sig rear. That should move the POI up 1" and 2" at 25yds respectively. You didn't specify if the Dawson front was a plain black, or fiber optic. If it's a FO you might not be clearly seeing the top of the blade due to the FO bulb being too large (bloom effect). According to Dawson's website both the #7 & #8 are .160 tall. I'm guessing that is a typographical error. Might want to give them a call and find out what the #8 is supposed to be and see if they can make you one just a bit shorter. Best of luck.

for reference on Sig sight #'s

  4. I copied several of my shooting buddies and purchased an inexpensive 2" web style belt ($5 at Lowes or HD). Then I wear it above my pistol belt with all my shell caddies on it. This way they ride higher on the Tactical Tummy rather than poke into it. Plus you can take it off for stages that don't require shotgun.

    Hhhmmm...

I should also add that I wear the buckle of the belt to the rear. I have two 6'ers and three 4'ers on mine. For the $5 it will cost you for the belt it's worth a try to see if it works for you. ;)

  5. I'm thinking of getting a couple Choate's for now till I figure out what I'm going to do. I'm pretty sure that it's going to be a long while before I ever master grabbing 4 shells at once, so the decision is whether to start with the 4's and grab 2 at a time or start with the 6's and try doing 3 at a time.

The only thing that I don't like the look of on the 6's is that they appear to stick up above the belt quite a bit which will conflict with a portion of my anatomy that shows no signs of going away unless I stop eating all together.

Ah, the old Tactical Tummy....I'm in the same situation.

  6. I've sighted mine for 25yds and primarily use it only on full sized close range hoser targets 25yds or less. I also run a Vortex Viper 2x-7x which handles a majority of the work since the clubs I shoot at tend to use reduced size targets (1/3 size) from 10-50yds.

  7. I'm running the Dawson adjustable rear with the .305 front sight on my 9mm Pro. I've found I don't have enough travel in the rear sight to get 115 or even 125gr bullets to hit point of aim. 147s shoot just fine though so that's what I'm using.

I like the thinner Dawson front post. I feel I am more accurate with it.

Yep, this is my main concern and reason for wanting an adjustable rear site. I run factory ammo and prefer to use 147gr, but found a good deal on 125gr so I'm sitting on 4k of them. I started shooting with a used SIG P226 that had the POI ~2in above POA so I'm used to that. With my M&P the POI is ~POA or slightly lower (typically my fault). My brain is not adjusting well to the "covered" type of sight picture after using a 6` o`clock hold for so many rounds. I REALLY hate the "covered" sight picture for pepper poppers and plate racks. :angry2:

It doesn't sound like there is a good option for an adjustable sight set up on an M&P L/Pro. :( I was looking at Novak's Extreme Duty, but feel they may fall prey to the same issues as the Dawson's.

Thanks for all the info and feedback. I may just replace the front site with an all black post and file it down to get the POA/POI I want.

  8. Some days the SEARCH function actually works. :)

Like the original poster I would like to add an adjustable rear sight to my M&P9L. The only one I have found so far is the Dawson adjustable rear requiring the .305 front sight. Is there anything else on the market yet that doesn't stick so high up off the slide?

  9. It's interesting. Having looked at the other models, I just don't see what they have to offer over the 1100. I may hold off on buying a shotgun; I'm not yet sure. I am pissed that mine got stolen, though, so who knows.

I've also considered "upgrading" my 1100 to a FNH. My only issue with my Rem is the loading gate. I've switched it to a Competion Master gate but it's not the best for weak hand loading.

One other thing that convinced me to wait on the upgrade was a recent conversation with one of my local gun shop owners. He is typically a very straight shooter so I'll give hime the benefit of the doubt here. He informed me that Remington would be coming out with a new auto loading shotgun to replace the 11-87 sometime in late 2010 or early 2011 that will be like nothing we've ever seen from Remington. It's supposed to cycle 2 3/4 up to 3 1/2 with some significantly better recoil reduction than your typical gas operated autoloader. Time will tell if he knew what he was talking about or not.

  10. To add to the above thoughts:

If "everyday Joe" sees a whole bunch of people, of every shape / size / gender / ethnicity out there shooting at these matches, don't you think that they would be much more likely to go? They would think "Looks like fun" as opposed to "I could never do that".

EXACTLY!! Some other excellent points on this subject were also made by others. As previously mentioned hopefully 3 Gun Nation on Versus will be able to strike a balance between the Pro's and the Average Joe. Looking at their most recent videos on their Youtube channel (LINK) it looks like they may be striking just the right balance. The camera work and interviewing looks top notch. The editing style is pretty interesting with the dual screens interview on one side and action on the other. It throws a lot at you in a short amount of time. Sadly I think we are stuck with that hideous choice of a sountrack for this year. I'm interested to see how Shooting USA does FB3G. They typically do an excellent job of capturing all aspects of the big matches including the main storylines, overall action, any pivotal turns, and always throw in enough average face time of the regular shooters so as to pique a persons interest rather than intimidate them away from the sport. They set a high standard and have an excellent formula for good TV. 3 Gun Nation should definitely take a few pages from Shooting USA's editing playbook rather than the one they were using for some of their early promo vids trying to "show" or "build" excitement with super fast cuts and high intensity soundtracks.

I did check Versus TV schedule for July, but it was mostly Tour de France with no listings for 3 Gun Nation. According to the 3 Gun Nation website it was supposed to start airing in July on Monday (7:30am) and Thur (3pm). Anybody know anything?

  11. Durham Rifle & Pistol Club (located in Mebane NC) has begun holding semi-monthly 3 gun matches this year.

    Match Fee is $20

Currently recognizing 4 classes: Iron, Optics Heavy Metal, and Open

Typically the match consists of 5 stages. One stage is typically shotgun only with the other 4 incorporating 2-3 weapons. There is also typically steel flashers out to 200yds on one stage.

    2010 Match Schedule:

    • July 31

    • September 25

    • October 24

    • November 13 - 2 Gun Fund Raiser Match for Youth Rifle program

    • December 11

Additional Information can be found at: DRPC Website

or you can email the match director (Charles Sole) directly at solejr@gmail.com

I can also attempt to answer any general questions here. Thanks in advance, and hope you can make it out to join us in the future!

  12. So, the DOH would be legal for production?

That was my understanding and the ruling given to me by my two local match directors. The wording from Section 20 is:

•Suitable for everyday use. “Race gun” type holster prohibited.

•May not be manufactured or cut lower than, and must cover the slide up to, ½” below the ejection port (belt slide “Yaqui” type holster exempt).

•Revolver holsters open no lower than halfway down the cylinder.

The specific text restricting DOH in Section 20 of the SS division is bolded:

•Suitable for everyday use. “Race gun” type holster prohibited.

•Must carry pistol so that the entire front strap (to the trigger guard) is at or above the top of the belt. Female shooters must carry the pistol no lower than the heel of the butt at the top of the belt.

•May not be manufactured or cut lower than, and must cover the slide up to, ½” below the ejection port (belt slide “Yaqui” type holster exempt).

I didn't see anything additional in the Special Conditions for Production that would eliminate DOH's. I don't believe a Bladetech with or without DOH is considered a “Race gun” type holster either. Also, you do have to be within the 2in rule from Section 10 though with the offset.

  13. Sorry to resurrect an older topic, but does anyone know the reasoning behind the USPSA's no DOH rule? I'm just curious. I started shooting this year in production with a Bladetech, but later added the DOH and noticed a big difference in my draw. I'm planning on shooting some SS next year and doing some preliminary research in this forum. Lots of informative and useful threads :)

  14. First off I'm not "chubby" just Husky as my Mom always said. Second the correct term is not "overhang but "Tactical Tummy". Similar question asked a little while back here:

    http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=106384

I go with 4-5 6 shell holders on a second belt worn above my regular belt. Puts everything a couple inches higher and it helps to clear the overhang. I've dropped some weight and still do the same thing as it's more convenient to be able to take the whole thing off when I don't need it and I like the shell carriers a little bit higher anyway.

I've wanted to try the Mark Otto vest but this has worked well enough for me.

I utilize the two belt system and prefer it to trying to cram CCW loaders onto the limited real estate on my pistol belt. Plus I can easily carry extra ammo instead of "just having enough for the stage". Hope that helps.

  15. I'm new to 3 gun as well and converted an old Rem 1100 over for competition purposes. I believe there are three possible options. The first, and most popular response you'll hear is "buy Italian" aka get a Bennelli followed by, buy a FNH. ;) The other two potential options are more economically feasible: 1. Daves Metal Works EazyLoader 2. Remington Competition Master carrier assembly. I'm not sure if both or either are applicable to the 11-87 platform.

I found several threads about the EazyLoader on the forums here using the search function when I was pondering the same question.

Hope that helps point you in the correct direction.

  16. aessu you've basically listed all the reason I considered when I was in the market for a dedicated 3-gun AR. The conclusion I came to was to purchase a JP-15. B) This should be a very good guide for those looking into what is needed from an AR to play this game. As M Ammo mentioned you need a low power optic for the CQB targets. I went a slightly different route and went with a 2x-7x Vortex Viper with BDC reticle. I also run a JP SRTS for the really close targets. I find that with the 7x power it is a great asset for the 200Yd+ targets.

  17. I've emailed my local match director about swapping chokes during a match, but am still awaiting a response. There was also a rule on the books about a maximum barrel length of 22". I have a 22" barrel and if I went with the extended chokes I would technically be violating that rule. Reading through most of the national matches rule books it appears that 26" maximum is typical, if one is set at all.
