  1. Really wanting an AR, but I want to shoot cheaply for awhile. So, here is my plan. Start with a high quality lower, trigger stock etc. Then purchase a complete 22 upper to get started shooting quickly. Once I get some more money, purchase or build a .223 or 5.56 upper to put on my existing lower. I think that it will be much easier to slip parts into the budget (hidden from wife!) each month that purchasing a pre-built gun.

Has anyone else gone this route?

Are there things to look for when buying a lower? It seems that a lower is a lower, but I may be oversimplifying it.

For an upper, I am thinking of the CMMG right now. Are there lowers that fit well or don't fit with a CMMG upper?

    Any comments are appreciated.

The principle component of any lower is the trigger group and for the 3gun game many choose either JP or Giselle. JP does offer a semi-stripped lower with their fire control system installed for $350 add a parts kit for $40 and then your choice of stock, buffer, spring, and buffer tube and you have a completed lower for ~$500 on the low end (A2 stock). It's not the most cost effective route, but buying stuff piecemeal never is, but at least you will have a good quality lower that you can build off of later as finances permit.

The best dedicated .22 upper is Nordic. Don't skimp on quality if you're gonna shoot the piss out of it.

+1000 for Nordic I've been running the snot out of mine the past few weeks shaking off the rust from the off season, and it just shoots everything I feed it. Buy once, cry once.

  2. What do you consider in shape? Rounds a shape right?

Yes, round technically is a shape;, though likely not the optimum shape for this match. :) I myself need to trim down the tactical tummy for this match. I just know the MD's and the venue well enough to know that there will be a fair to good amount of movement on the stages. The venue certainly has the real estate to do several long jungle run type stages. I don't anticipate any stand and shoot type or minimal movement stages due to being limited by pistol bay widths and depths. Hope to see you all there.

  3. For those just hearing about this match from 3GN and strongly considering it, do yourself a favor and get your registration in the mail yesterday. The piece of property that will host this match is also utilized for Woody's DMR match, lots of photos in the linked thread. This will mostly be a natural terrain match so make sure you're in shape as I'm quite certain there will be a fair amount of movement on each stage. :D

  4. Very very good factory inside info says the first batch of JM 930's are being assembled today

The million dollar question though is which FFL's are getting them? Or are these going to Mossberg shooting teams?

I'd hazard a guess that those are likely going to Mossberg sponsored shooters (if they don't already have one) and some other VIP's. My local FFL just returned from a distributor trade show where Mossberg representatives were stating a mid June to early July delivery for the 930 JM models. I honestly hope it's not that long, but it certainly sounds plausible.

  5. I can't get mine to jam. Tried everything. I refuse to clean it. I couldn't be happier.

I finally had mine hiccup today (failure to go into battery) after about 1000 rounds....however it clearly was an issue with the ammo. I had one box of older Remington Target (circa late 90's) loaded in a mag, Winchester Dynapoint (new) in the other 4 mags and some older Remington Thunderbolts (circa mid 80's) waiting to be loaded. The Rem target jammed going in and wouldn't go into battery. Dropped the mag and finally got it to go into battery by releasing the bolt 3 times, the round fired. Swapped out to the Dynapoint loaded mag and it chewed through them with no issues. Swapped back to the Remington loaded mag and same as previous round. Unload the mag and reloaded it with the Rem Thunderbolts. Everything ran flawlessly except for two FTF out of 500 rounds of Thunderbolts.

I'm REALLY loving my NC-22 upper! I got a whole afternoons worth of drills in for ~$20 in .22LR ammo that would have cost me ~$135 in .223Rem ammo. Three more sessions like today and the upper will have paid for itself already!

  6. the Crossfire line is their budget series and does not have a stellar track record Fortunately Vortex has a lifetime 100% warranty I have a few Crossfires and would NOT put one on anything but a rimfire, YMMV.

That's Very Bad News - I just ordered one to put on my AR:(

Hope you're wrong - will let you know in a year...

    Jack

Like I said YMMV and if it doesn't Vortex does have the 100% no BS lifetime warranty. Worst case scenario the scope breakes and you're without it for a few weeks while they fix it or send you a replacement.

If you dig a little deeper into Camerland NY's current sale there is a VERY nice 6-20x Viper model on sale at an excellent price. I already have three of them. :)

  7. I'm a big Vortex fan and have over a dozen of their optics, but please understand that the Crossfire line is their lower end budget series made in China and does not have a stellar track record for reliability. Fortunately Vortex does a have a lifetime 100% no BS warranty if the scope fails. I have a few Crossfires and would NOT put one on anything but a rimfire, YMMV.

  8. My old man picked up a Savage BTV bolt action .22 the other day, so as a present I gave him one of my 4-16x scopes that I had laying around, and help him sited it in. With even the stock trigger, I was able to put 10shots in the Same hole :o ! I've never been able to do that with any of my JP rifles... <_< So I think I caught the bug. I already plan on using a TacSol X-ring setup for STC, so I'm really looking for a bolt action .22, new for this year my range will be holding precision .22 matches ranges from 35yards out to 150yards.

    While I would LOVE a 40x with a AI-AX stock.. It AIN'T GOING TO HAPPEN

Oh also to add, something that might look as similar to my current .308 rifle, which is a FNH SPR A5, but i'm guessing thats more to do with just a stock then anything else.

My top choice would be an Anschutz 64 MPR, but a more reasonably priced option would be either a Savage or CZ 452 Varmint (I'm not sold on the 453 or 455 yet). I went the CZ route and couldn't be happier! Yes they are just a touch more expensive than a Savage, but the fit and finish is far superior. You can throw either in a Boyd's Tacticool stock if you choose. Out of the box the Savage may have an edge with the Accu-trigger, but the CZ's trigger is VERY easy to adjust into the 18-24 oz range with just a simple spring swap. At my local monthly tactical rimfire match) it's an Anschutz or CZ type of crowd. ;)

A fun little online match to compete in as the monthly SRTac SH match (LINK. Ity's a LOT tougher to shoot than it looks. :)

  9. One note about the SJC Titan comp and SE adapter route: you will need a crush or peel washer (comp does not come with one) to properly time the comp unless you intend to have a gunsmith properly time the comp for you by removing material from the back of the comp. I initially went the route of washer, but had a gunsmith properly time it for me to resolve a bullet deflection issue. Very good comp and quite happy with it both in effectiveness and aesthetics on a M1A. Just make sure all the pieces line up well with your bore axis. ;)

I used a piece of 220g sand paper to time mine. Best I can remember it only took about 240 passes. It doesn't look as good as a smith-timed piece, but after shooting it, I'm so scared of the comp I don't want to get close enough to see the difference.

Mine was about 185 degrees off of being properly timed. Sandpaper was not an option. ;) Also I inadvertently mis-spoke the material was removed from the SE adapter not the SJC brake. The threading on the adapter was much longer than the threaded section of the brake.

  10. 11. I was considering a Battlecomp BABC for the front end, still not 100% tho on that. As of right now its a bare bones Springer M14 with composite stock and Iron Sights. So thats why I'm looking for ideas. Its been a safe queen for as long as I've owned it, It's time to get it out and have some fun with it...

I have no experience with a BattleComp, but I find it hard to believe that it is significantly better than a JP or Titan (LINK). Knowing a little about machining I can see why it's higher in price though. It is certainly a little more compact than a JP or Titan. Other than deciding on a muzzle brake and possibly getting the NM front sight (thinner) you won't need to do much to an M1A for 3gun. Now if you want to get into the precision side....that's a lot more money and an entirely different ball of wax. :) I've traveled down that rode a little and will have a JAE GenIII stock arriving before Xmas.

  12. If you're looking for help on how to turn it into the best Heavy Metal 3 gun rifle- you've come to the right place. Replace the flash hider w/ an adapter from Smith Enterprises, screw on your choice of muzzle brake, install a thin front sight post, and you are done. The fancy stocks, optic mounts, goofy gas locks that severely shorten the sight radius, and other doo-dads will not make it a better 3 gun rifle. :)

The part Bryan was refering to is actually not listed on the Smith Enterprises webpage for some reason. I purchased mine from here: LINK. As for muzzle brakes I have several JP's, but went with a SJC Titan for the M1A. It looks proportionate to the rifle and works great! If you do go that route make sure to order a crush washer with the brake (it is not included from the manufacturer) unless you are going to have a machinist clock the brake for you.

  13. The Tactical crowd wants 18" barrels

They also want a pump shotgun. That's not really the market this is seeking.

So what market is it seeking at being an auto-loader at 7+1?

I don't think even Remington knows whom they are marketing this shotgun to. It serves neither the tactical nor competitive crowd. If anybody knows Robby Johnson they might want to bend his ear a little and see if he can talk some sense into Remington. Then again I work in the corporate world and somebody high up probably had the "brilliant" idea that they could combine attributes desired by both market groups, yet not meeting either groups needs, and easily sell it to both groups while only having to manufacture one model. Yep, I completely see the "corporate logic" in it now. :roflol:

  14. I too recall a post last summer about somebody testing a prototype prismatic with a BDC reticle for Leupold. I spoke with the Leupold rep at FB3G2010 about adding a BDC reticle option to the prismatic line. On the table he had a 1-4x with a very suitable BDC:

    illum-cm-r2.gif

I suggested they thin up the line thickness a little so as not to obscure the targets at long range. The rep was gracious enough to listen, but unless they start hearing request from many of the top Limited/Irons shooters for it, I don't think it is going to happen. I personally would love to have one and be very temped to start shooting Limited/Irons once again full time. I know Eotech has some quasi-BDC reticles for the 552 and XPS2. I think one of the best reticles on the market can be found in the Vortex Viper PST 1-4x:

    sub_viper-pst_14st-moa_details-1.jpg

of course that puts you into Tac Optics which sort of defeats the original purpose of using the prismatic. :(

  15. What's the lead time on a NC upper these days? I periodically check their website, but they are ALWAYS out of stock. Do I need to call and get on a waiting list or is there some other way? Thanks in advance.

  16. ...do you believe it'll be worth it to wait?

Yes I do. I am eagerly awaiting delivery, hopefully this week.

Your not talking about the keltec thing on cover of G&A are you?

    HECK NO!

Well that is a relief! You have definitely piqued my curiosity now. I'm still running my 1100 but have been saving my extra pennies in anticipation of picking up either an FN or Mosssberg 930 for next season.

  17. My two pet loads for my DPMS LR-308 with a 24" barrel are:

41.5gr IMR-4895 under a 168gr Nosler Competitoin in an LC case Win Lg primer (~2540 FPS)

43.5gr Varget under a 175gr Nosler Competition in an LC case Win lg primer (~2610 FPS)

Both are super accurate out of my rifle.

I determined these loads by selecting a 2-3gr powder charge range on the low end of the spectrum and then loaded 10 rounds of each 0.5gr increment. Firing two 5 round groups should give you a pretty good idea of when you reach an accuarcy node for your rifle. Once you locate a node if you want to refine your load in 0.1-.02gr increments is up to you.

One note on loading for the AR platform, unlike loading for the bolt gun it is highly reccomended that you FL size each piece of brass and not do neck size only. I personally use small base sizing dies as an extra precaution since most LC brass available commercially is machine gun fired. I prefer LC or Win brass since they are a bit tougher than Federal or Remington brass. If possible you might also consider installing an adjustable gas block. Most factory guns are WAY over gassed and have a tendency to eat brass quicker. YMMV
