  1. This weekend my bolt carrier failed. I've never heard of or seen this failure mode. I'm wondering if I should send it to Young's Manufacturing for analysis. Ammo was factory American Eagle 55gr. You can see in the picture that the rear gas ring is bent 90 degrees. I'm wondering if this was wedged between the carrier and bolt body causing stress on the carrier.

I haven't been able to get the upper apart yet. The front of the carrier spread enough to bulge the upper and lock it all up. Next step is to remove hand guard and barrel or just cut the upper.

Best I can tell, the bolt seems to be intact and the case is still in the chamber. Until I get it pulled apart and can see in the barrel, a squib is still a possibility. However, the previous shot sounded and cycled normally.

  2. My 18" bbl is the most accurate with 69gr SMK, if memory serves, over 22.5 - 24gr Varget depending on the primer.  However, I have to go slow loading with Varget due to it bridging often.

So, being lazy, I've found that the same charge of WC844 (H335 equivalent) that I use behind Hornady 55gr for my go to match load works well for the 69 SMK to make the longer flashers move more.  I load the 55's to the cannelure on cases trimmed to 1.75".  The SMK I load to OAL of 2.24.

This may not work well for your rifle but you already know that since you aren't new to reloading.

  3. I had a long talk typed out about the revelations in the finale then realized that spoilers may not be too welcome.  Anyway, never saw the two biggest coming.  I'm with you, definitely on the list to re-watch.  I'll be eager to see how/if Season 2 makes use of the samarai warriors.  Are there other Worlds?

  4. I am not affiliated with them in any way but would like to relay my experience with the customer service.  I bought two boxes of 180gr .40 at the Gator Classic and when I went to load some the next week I found that I had made it home with two boxes of 155gr 9mm.  I emailed him and offered to send those back if he'd ship me the 180's or he could bill me for the 155s and ship me the 180s I had already paid for.  He called me back the next day and said he would be shipping me the two boxes of 180s free of charge and I could keep the 155s.

It was as much my fault as his that I walked away with the wrong boxes.  He stepped up and that earned him a loyal customer. (if they work well in my guns)

  5. If you do not have a brass processing setup with a Dillon or other powered trimmer  RCBS x dies are nice.  They have a shelf inside the die that prevents the cases from lengthening when sized.  You can trim brass to 1.75 or less once, if it is longer and not have to worry about it again.  However, if you pick up range brass from other shooters you still have to check for long cases.   Thought it worth mentioning.

  6. Having been involved with administering a (admittedly failed) forum in the past I wonder if there are skin templates available to change the look and feel of the new version.  Maybe a "classic theme" if this is just a newer version of the same platform.

That comment was for all the haters to chew on.B)

I agree with GrumpyOne.  At first I was unhappy.   Then I started poking around and found that it wasn't so bad and had improved in many ways.

  7. OK, so I went to the Glock sight to check out tis G40 since I hadn't heard of it and see this pic... Can anyone explain what's going on with that pistol?  Slide looks to be in full battery...Do they offer an extended barrel short slide gun?

  8. MBX followers will not work in other tubes (SV, STI, Rescomp. etc.) MBX tubes do not get as narrow a the top below the feed lips and they make the follower wider than others. However, TTI followers do work in MBX tubes for some people. They seemed too loose at the top for me.

  9. In reference to the argument that the case exerts force on the beech face equal to the force exerted on the bullet...

I know in rifles, maybe not as much in the lower pressure of pistols, but the case expands and locks in the chamber until the pressure drops as the bullet leaves the bbl.

Based on this, the bullet has to leave the barrel before the link starts pulling the barrel down. Further, the case doesn't push the slide back. The extractor pulls the case from the barrel. This is why timing is so important. All the kinetic energy that causes the slide to recoil is generated while the bullet is in the barrel. Once pressures drop, momentum handles the rest. However minuscule, the barrel and slide have to begin movement before the bullet leaves the barrel. The friction inside the barrel from the bullet is a non factor when compared to the primary force pushing the bullet forward and the slide/bbl assembly rearward. Definitely not equal.

  10. That's how I read it...

ChemistShooter, when my 550B was new I had a hard time removing that bushing also. In fact, for months I would screw the wingnut off the failsafe bar to allow the powder measure to lift off the toolhead. I eventually got tired of it and used a set of pliers to pull the bushing by grabbing it below the bracket while the ram was raised and tilting it (slightly) until it popped out. It needs to come out the bottom of the return bracket, not the slot in the end. It's been easier to pull since that first time.

We build some of the largest portable conveying equipment in the world and have gear on every continent. I started here as a welder almost 12 years ago. If anyone needs conveying or mining equipment, I'm your guy.

There's a great chance that we use some of your equipment...I'll look.

  12. Just got mine back from Accurate Iron. I've only had time to practice loading. However, the "secret squirrel $#|+" Mike did makes quad loading much easier. I'm excited to get it to the range. The boss even gives her nod of approval!uju8e4a3.jpg

I'm thinking Mike may have found the magic trick to get the forearm out of the way on these things. More to come after a few boxes of shells.

  13. I also included a pic of a very rough surface just forward of where a loaded shell would sit. This was exactly like this from the factory and looks the same after appx 80 rds and after a bore scrub w/brush & solvent cleaning. It seems to have a slight look of rings on a big tree if you cut a tree down. I think it's a bad cut of the barrel. Should I just not worry about it?

I noticed this in my barrel too. It's right where the forcing cone would be in a standard barrel. Glad to know I'm not the only one. Anyone know if that is by design or if that area should be polished like the rest of the barrel?
