yeh happens sometimes with the heavy stuff without a good crimp. or 929's with factory 9mm.
Yep, my 929 wouldn't fire factory ammo worth a damn.

Revolver rounds, especially for magnum loads, typically use a roll crimp to prevent setback from recoil.
Bullet creep, moves forward. I've had one laying in the cylinder with the powder behind it.

So there you have it. Much like Goldilocks, it's either too much crimp, not enough crimp, or just right.
Happy Easter to All

I'm measuring the crimp at .372". We didn't get any tumbling issues on the 42 rounds we fired during ladder testing.
I don't go by what it measures, I load a few and pull one. I go by what it looks like.
-
That's a pretty heavy crimp to me. I don't go that deep.

Here's a link to Gene's ad. I've bought 1000s of once fired brass from him.
It's all tumbled, roll sized, and deprimed.

Here's a load for win 231
Name: .38 Short Colt: 158gr Berry's RN: 231 3.7gr: OAL 1.20
Notes: S&W 627 5"
Shots: 11
Average: 777 ft/s
SD: 25 ft/s
Min: 736 ft/s
Max: 817 ft/s
Spread: 81 ft/sPower Factor Average: 122
Power Factor Low: 116
Power Factor High: 129Barometric Pressure: 30 in Hg
Temperature: 57 F
Bullet Weight: 158
Powder: 231 3.7gr
Bullet: Berry's 158gr RN
C.O.A.L.: 1.20
Primer: Fed SPP
Case: Starline -
I've only loaded 10 or 20 thousand .38 Short Colts, so take this with a grain of rice.
I load on a Dillon 750 with a bullet feeder and a case feeder.
I run a .357 sizing die, 9mm powder funnel, 9mm seating die and a 9mm crimping die.
I load mine to an OAL of 1.20 with a .358 160 grain bullet (Blue or Bayou).
I'm running a green conversion kit that I drilled out so a .38 Short Colt would fit thru it (it still works fine for 9mm).
Keep in mind any 9mm load data will work in .38 Short Colt.

Yes, to me heavier bullets going slower have less felt recoil than lighter bullets going faster.
I load 160gr bullets in .38 Short Colt. When I use Win 231 they have more snap then Clays for the same power factor.

Long time lurker, but I have been running Scheel buffer in my carbine for a couple of years now and really like it, I use it for a training replacement for my 5.56 AR since I can't do drills with rifle calibers at the range I belong to. I ended up getting rid of the supplied spring because it wouldn't always feed from bolt lock back. 6 months ago, I just cut down a AR 5.56mm carbine factory spring. I just measured the number of coils so the buffer would bottom out in the stock and not have spring bind when at full compression. Works much better and still super soft shooting. I had to play with my roller spring weights to find the happy place. I am running a old school extractor CMMG BCG and an colt style lower receiver.
This spring I bought at a5 buffer tube from scheels, put my wave washer in the butt with a couple of quarters to separate the carbine spring and buffer. Now it is really soft and fast. I am a weirdo, I like heavy 9mm for everything, so my current load is 165gr Powder Coated RN, 1.150", 2.5 gr Tightgroup 129 pf in 16"
Good luck!
Cool, thanks for the info.

Oh, and the factory comp was useless.

My 929 wouldn't fire factory ammo reliably, had bullet creep with factory ammo, and some brass was nearly impossible to get in or out of my TK moon clips.
I finally settled on FC Federal brass, Federal small pistol primers, and .358 160 grain bullets.
-
I have both a 627 and 929. The 929 took hours and hours of dicking around to run smoothly.
The 627 was plug and play.

I just had a thought. Remove the shell plate. Place an empty shell on top of the platform. Run it up.
Does it tilt in?
If the top of the platform is at a right angle to the center line of the die it shouldn't.
Next put the shell plate on without the spring and ball. Tighten it down all the way. Run it up.
Does it tilt in?
Let's remove the variables.
Did you try any of these steps?

To each their own. While I don't like shooting irons I am much better with them now than before I started shooting with a dot. I was as surprised as anyone.
I'm just joking with ya. Dots are cool.

Probably heeling and pushing the trigger sideways, I do the same. When I pull with my WH trigger finger it tightens up the bottom of my palm (opposite thumb) and pushes the muzzle up. Plus that index finger isn’t as flexy as the SH one.
What does heeling mean?

This would be solved easily if you have a dot revo and dryfire. You would see the dot being driven down if you are focusing properly. I guess you could see it with irons but its much harder
A dot, you mean like the girlie men use?
Son, I've been looking at the front sight since I was knee high to a black and white TV, a Telex machine, an 8mm movie projector, a 78 LP player, a rotary phone booth... it's too late for me to change.
