  1. Sam,

Dry-firing in Wyoming in a barn in the winter , that indomitable

Some info about the targets I have, looks like Chris Patty has some for sale on his site too (see above thread). In case you wanted to do it yourself, my target measures 12" from bottom edge to top of shoulder, 15" from bottom edge to top of head, 9 1/4" across the body and the head is 3" wide, it's a 4:1 scale.

I may see you again next summer Sam, the wife is planning a trip for us out there and I'll just have to adjust the trip dates to allow myself to hit a match or two ;)

  2. Out of curiosity I put a gage in my 48 cubit foot safe to measure the humidity. Over the course of a week I saw daily reading of about 62% to 68% humidity, interestingly right now the outside the humidity is 63% and the interior of my safe is about 67%. This is with a golden rod, 3 large dessicant bags (recently baked), 5 small dessicant bags and some fresh rice. <_< Obviously my basement is pretty humid, and I live in a crappy climate, but it's not so bad that my basement walls sweat....

  3. This is no-brainer type stuff, but I figured I'd share it because I've been really impressed with how much it's helped.

I am unable to live fire practice barricade and port shooting :( , so in an effort to dry-fire practice barricade and port shooting I took a large piece of cardboard I had left over from last summers screen door project and cut in into a 2' by 6' rectangle. I then added port holes for standing and kneeling shooting, which I cover with a sheet of paper when I am not using. I have a low ceiling with beams exposed in my gun room so I punched a hole in the top of the barricade and hung my creation from a nail in the ceiling. Voila, instant barricade! As a bonus it's light and takes up little space, so I can store it behind my safe.

I've been setting up stages with my small ipsic targets and feel that over the past few days I have definetly improved my technique, specifically the order in which I engage targets.

    Hope this helps someone!

  4. The year I spent with the goal of open GM as my sole focus went like this:

Monday, 30 min dry fire am, 45-60 min dry fire pm

Tuesday, 200-300 rds live fire am, 45-60 min dry fire pm

Wednesday, 30 min dry fire am, 45-60 min dry fire pm

thursday, 200-300 rds live fire am, 45-60 min dry fire pm

Friday, 30 min dry fire am, bowling pin match pm (180 rds)

    Saturday, local match or rest

    Sunday, local match or rest

This was from december 02 to about september 03.

This will get anybody to M or better in  a year. Will likely boost you a class level in a month or two.

When I went to two DF sessions a day I noticed an immediate improvement in my initial perfirmance, warm up was drastically reduced.

    Now get going! :)

    THREAD DRIFT:

    Steve,

Do you do any mental training (i.e. visualization, ego strengthening), and can you describe your physical fitness routine during this same time frame?

    Thanks!

  5. I know this is not a 100% appropriate question for Brian's forums, but you guys would know best....

Are the JHP's we use in open gun loads at all effective in expanding like self defense JHP's that are specifically designed to expand?

I was contemplating how the hollowpoint boatail bullets used in rifle competition are not to be used for hunting because they aren't designed to expand, and was paralleling it to IPSC bullets.

    Just curious.... <_<

  6. I appreciate all the great advice, I received better thought provoking answers to my post than expected.

I guess my desire to start studying the martial arts was formed by my constant right ankle pain that I seem to get from jogging. I love jogging, but have been looking for something to fill the void created by my inability to continue; I've tried stretching more, and braces all to no avail, I have small ankles and wrists that seem to be very susceptible to injury. I was looking for something that would benefit my shooting because that is my #1 interest. I exercise very early in the morning because I have three kids that make it all but impossible to accomplish any training in the evening after work. Therefore I would need to study the martial arts at 5 AM, which is impossible given the lack of civilization in my area....there's only a few schools and they're all in the evening. If I get any time to myself in the evening it goes to shooting and I really don't want to change that because as it stands now my dry fire routines are sporadic at best.

So to make a long story short I think I'll forgo with any martial arts at this time. I do not feel sad about this decision, instead I feel patient that there will be a time in my life when I will have time to shoot competitively at a high level and study the martial arts. And yes, I understand that shooting is a martial art.

Thanks for all the insightful replies.

  7. Bill,

Congratulations man! I know I'm a little late, but I haven't seen you in a while and I'm kinda new to the forum. Hope to see you on the range soon.

    Regards,

    Todd

    Thanks Todd!

Yeah, I haven't been shooting much: work, family and guns in the shop. If all goes well I'll be shooting Open next year.

  8. I'm thinking of taking up some martial arts, partly because I've always been interested and have never tried and partly to enhance my shooting. I am getting a Tai Chi VHS tape for Christmas, I thought Tai Chi would help with my unathletic-like balance.

Also thinking about getting a bokken, but am unsure of which bokken/martial arts discipline is best for my goals....there are so many disciplines that it's overwhelming!

My goals are to enhance my balance, health, and coordination, the ultimate goal being enhanced shooting and having a fun time doing it.

Does anyone have any advice, or can you provide some guidance or perhaps recommend a good book for a beginner who knows nothing?

    Thanks.

  9. Wildman,

Cost of living is very high in the area, but to make it slightly more attractive us gov't folks get a cost of living allowance. I can't remember the exact amount, but if you'd like the figures send me an e-mail and I'll dig it up here at work.

On a personal note: I came here from Colorado and miss the West terribly. But sometimes you need to follow the work. On a positive note, there is plenty of great shooting and lotsa competition, and gov't jobs are stable with lots of holidays off.....

  10. Dealing with a Caspian open gun in 38 Supercomp w/Springfield slide. There is enough gap between the slide and frame to not allow the slide to push the disconnector down enough to activate, therefore when you fire the gun the hammer follows as the slide closes.

If I have the slide off of the gun I can physically push the disconnector down to active it. I have tried this same slide on other 100% reliable 1911 frames and it doesn't disconnect any of them, so I think I've narrowed the problem down to the slide. I've also tried 3 other disconnectors in this gun all with no luck.

I really don't want to consider replacing the slide as an option, so my question is whether or not there is a workaround to this, such as a specially made longer than usual disconnector (a Brownells review proved fruitless).

And will I damage any of the trigger components if I fire the gun in its current condition?

    Thanks!

  11. Regarding swelling 40 cal SS mags, see my post at the link below which I pasted below:

    http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?...=tripp,and,mags

UPDATE: after much use my new style Tripp mags are now swelling and not falling out of the gun. I called Tripp concerning this yesterday and he said to throw the top 3" of a gutted mag body in a padded vise and squeeze it down to 0.533" width. I threw two mag bodies in the vise, was able to squeeze them down to 0.540", from 0.545", and tested them today with great success. It seemed to me like if you squeezed them any tighter than 0.540" the follower would start binding in the tube. Hope this helps....
