Like it says in the description, I've succumbed to pressure from my shooting crew and started a new project. Coming from an IDPA background, I've always managed to project a purist's disdain for those "Flash Gordon" creations until, that is, I allowed myself to try a couple friend's... wow! Ear-to-ear grin! Maintaining a degree of contrarianism (sp?) I chose the Tanfoglio platform. Where I compete, I've only once seen another but I frankly feel that it is fully the equal of any other design. Just costs less. (Plus, my Limited Pistol is er… a Tanfo Limited, so I already have all the ancillary stuff and am familiar with how things work.
So I went shopping. On the advice of Henning Wallgren (great guy to do business with btw) at www.henningshop.com I ordered an LTD online and had it shipped to Rich Dettelhouser. www.canyoncreekcustom.com
Here is where things got pretty funny. Henning advised a 4 port titanium comp that I guess he and Rich designed (you can see it on the latter’s website) and V6 “popplehole” configuration. He said to me, “Get the poppleholes. Rich may try to talk you out of it but you want them.” So I called Rich and relayed that to him. He said, “No poppleholes!” You don’t need ‘em and the gun will be more pleasant to shoot without.” Like Henning, Rich is very willing to spend some time talking to his customers, which is not always the case in today’s busy, business world.
So, what to do? Both these guys are highly accomplished competitors and, by all accounts, Rich is a great gunsmith. They even have a history of working projects together. I think they’re friends but in total disagreement on this issue! Well the solution came when Rich told me he’d slot the slide for the holes but not drill the barrel. If, at some later time, I decided I just had to have it drilled to send him the slide and barrel and he’d turn them around in a day. Brilliant! Speaking with Henning a few days later while placing an order for some other stuff, I told him about this. His comment? “You’ll want them.”
Funny.
Next thing on my list was a C-More mount. Since, remember I’m an old “irons” guy who thinks he’s got a pretty good index, it would be a sideways mount. I’d heard that the body of the optic blocked left side views from the shooters perspective but trying my friend Carey’s gun, I sensed no such issue. Never noticed it at all. We’ll see. My only worry was that I’d be constantly banging my right thumb on it during the draw. Enter Matt Cheely who just came out with a mount for these pistols. www.ccgunworks.com
Matt posted in this forum, a special introductory deal and I jumped on it. Mailed him a check and without even waiting for it to clear the bank, he Priority Mailed it to me. (I hope his accountant isn’t reading this.) Another example of a business I’ll be sure to recommend and support. The part came, was/is beautiful, fit 100% perfectly and even came with the right size screws cut to the right length! Thirty three seconds later, it was perched on my .40 LTD and on its way to our local weekly “Dueling Tree” match. www.getsomeguns.com
Guess what? No thumb problems! Also of note, there are no sharp edges anywhere on this mount. It’s expertly “melted” and feels about as threatening as a bar of soap. The C-More’s glass is just slightly above top of slide. Perfect. Did I win? Yes! (Well, no actually, but I shot well enough to leave happy.)
If anyone would like to see a picture of how the mount fits, let me know and I’ll post one.
So… three companies and individuals that are very good to do business with and a happy new open competitor fully prepared to dominate and regulate! (Right.)
