  1. I have this exact one -

If I do in fact have the carbine length spring can I use the standard spring that came with the gun to see if that works??? The gun came with the standard Ar-15 stock. Non adjustable one.

You can't use the longer rifle spring because the internal dimensions of the carbine and rifle tubes are different.

OK - So I assume the spring that came with the adjustable stock is for the carbine length. Is there a rifle length buffer as well?

  2. Gotm4 - This is a rifle length AR. What length am I looking at for this rifle in comparison to the carbine length

Rifle 11 3/4" to 13 1/2" (for rifle stocks only regardless of the length of the upper).

Carbine 10 1/16" to 11 1/4" (for carbine stocks only regardless of the length of the upper).

    Ok - Now I am confused. :-)

This stock is adjustable. And can be used in Rifle and Carbine length. How would I know what to use.

Can you post a pic of your stock one just like it?

Most 'adjustable' stocks have carbine length buffers and springs.

  4. Thanks for all of the responses - Much appreciated.

I am betting there is a missalignment of the upper receiver and the stock tube causing the bolt carrier to bind on the tube. Pull the carrier and look for marks on the top of the carrier near the gas key. The other problem might be the wrong or to short buffer being used, look for marks on the lower receiver where the top of the carrier would hit it. It will look like two verticle lines being hammered into the top of the lower receiver where the stock tube comes through. If y ou have a "big pin" lower you need to run an adapter. This also will cause the trouble you are having. KurtM

Kurt - I am not sure what type of lower I have BUT when I fitted the Upper I needed an offset pin. This I would assume makes my lower a "big pin" lower as you put it because the upper had a smaller hole than the lower. Other than the offset pin, what other adapters to I need to have in order to solve the problem?

Check you buffer spring length. It should be for a carbine 10 1/16" to 11 1/4"

  5. Hi Guys,

I am pretty new to the 3 gun equipment. I have an oldish type AR-15. I recently fitted a flat top receiver and an adjustable stock. This is the type of stock that was purchased and fitted Adjustable Stock with Pic

After fitting, I am finding it difficult for the bolt/action to go back into battery. After the shot is fired, the bolt sort suspends at the open position, with or without the mag inserted. The only way to get it back to battery is either to shake the living daylights out of it or actually hitting it on the side.

Is the problem with the flat top or the stock. My guess is the stock and I have no idea what to adjust and/or check. Can anyone assist???

  6. Do you like the shorty? I see most open guys shooting 5 inch guns. Trying to decide which length in the event I ever decide to shoot open.

I was in the same position you were in a few months ago. I could not decide which way to go and decided to take the risk and build it. Unfortunately there are no other short guns here for me to test. And, yes I love it. I feel its much more comfortable in my hand and with the first hew hundred rounds I was actually overtracking pass the targets. Nothing some dry firing sorted out.....

Its a little snappier if you can call it that compared to the 5" but up close its actually quite easy to let all hell break loose :)

  7. Been lurking around here for a very long time without adding pics of my blasters. I was dry firing last night and has some free time and took these...

Firstly, this is old faithful. I did about 70 000 rounds and welded up a few cracks on the slide and frame and its still running. Its about clumsy now that I have the shorty 4.5" slide but it still works and will probably just replace the barrel in time to come....

O yah, excuse the pics. It was taken with my HTC cellphone.....

Now for the new one. Only fired about 1000 rounds.

  8. Topmauls post about dot size for shotgun got me thinking. How does the JP sight work with the melt in mount? What bonding agent is used becuase if I am not mistaken the mount is attached directly to the barrel and those things get pretty darn hot. Any info on this???

    Thanks

  9. I recently had to go to Johannesburg South Africa for work and had to chance to meet Mo Zee and his lovely wife. Talk about great people! Although we only had a few hours to hang out I had a great time and we had plenty of laughs.

Mo, Sorry about the age thing, it was solely based on how mature you are and how young I think I look. Talk to you soon buddy.

    Hey Jon,

Yes, it was an awesome evening. It was a pity you left the Friday but perhaps next time you could come and shoot a match here over. Hope your buddy is doing much better and that you enjoyed the dinner...

Dont worry about the age thing. I get it quite often so I am used to it :).

Looking forward to your next visit here. Chat soon....

Btw - Yumna gave her regards.

  10. Yes it will work.

depending on what your lower is ...it may require an offset front take down pin...no problem easy to get and cheap.

    Jim

Ps your old bolt carrier may not have the notches for the forward assist...it will still work and fit but the assist will not work without the proper bolt carrier.

also easy to get new carrier

Wow that was quick - Thanks :)

I am not concerned about the forward assist, mainly the flat top for the scopes. I take it there wont be any problems leaving an assist that is not functional.

  11. Unfortunately I don't shoot shotguns, and I have no idea.

But, I'll be meeting a guy who's in close contact with ROSCO people in a couple of days at the European Handgun Championship in France, and I will ask him.

ETA: EHC is really cluttering my mind ... the guy is forum member Sensei, thus you might be able to contact him too.

Will try contacting him - thanks

  12. Please find below 2 video clips of IPSC Open shotguns.

One, an Italian design, features 3 revolving tubes that hold up to around 28 rounds in total.

The second design is a Thai invention and can be adapted to different guns. Basically the entire mag tube is preplaced with an new loaded tube.

    post-1449-1189677152.jpg

I entirely support mag restrictions in Standard Division but I believe Open should be Open, even if I personally don't like silly-long guns.

Thai Open Gun - Download then play (1.5MB)

Do you have websites for the open guns used above?

  13. I recently got myself the 3 gun US nationals DVD and noticed that most of the top guns are using the JP/Doctor sight on their shotguns.

Is there any specific reason besides the fact that the scope is closer to the bore of the barrel.

I have been contemplating fitting the cmore onto mine because it has a larger viewing area for the dot.

    Any thoughts on this? Pros/Cons

  14. Jax's comment about IOR is a good one and I forgot about them. Plenty of value for the money there.

One more thing. You can buy the optic you need off of this forum, the USPSA forum, or many other forums and save yourself some money. IMO, as long as the lenses are not scratched and no one has used it for a tool, used works as well as new.

    Charles Bond

Thanks Charles, only problem is if the seller is willing to ship to ZA, but I will cross that bridge once one is for sale.

I have searched the forum and came across the Millet DMS. Any opinions on this? I believe its pretty new.

  15. After researching this and similar issues extensively in preparation for putting together an open gun, 10 rounds in the magazine is the maximum, as is 10+1 total (not 10 in the mag, 1 in the chamber, and 1 on the loading gate of a suitable Benelli). Somewhere on this board is a reference to building an open gun that will hold 11 in the mag tube, and using a magazine limiter to limit to 10 rounds for USPSA matches, so you don't accidentally load 11 and get disqualified.

    --Gene

Slightly off topic, but do you guys know if there is a limit for IPSC open?

  16. So, I am in South Africa and unfortunately cannot try out all of the scopes mentioned above.

Can anyone explain to me what the difference is between the sights above and a normal hunting scope. Stupid question I know but this is all new to me.

  17. This may be slightly off topic but why put all of this effort into getting 29 to fit? With SV tubes, Dawson pads, and grams guts 28 is easy and in my experience zero tuning is needed to achieve. You have heard it before but it really is a non issue since you can almost always find a spot to do a reload that is OFF the clock.

I do agree, I have 1 28 rounder that I use which is reliable. However I like playing around with new equipment. I guess I have too much time on my hands.

  18. Hi odigbb,

SV tubes tend to be longer then STI. I make a 4mm pad and a 2.5mm pad, so you can choose which pad is needed to fit the gauge. Making a 29 round mag work is a product of choosing the right parts and tuning them together correctly. There is no room to take off material from my 4mm base pad. If a 4mm pad makes the mag too long, then the 2.5mm will. work. If you must use the 4mm, then material needs to be taken off the feed lips at the top off the tube, and the feed lips then need to be reshaped and tuned for correct dimensions. First, make sure the bottom of the mag tube is flat, and the base pad lips are correctly shaped and sized to accept the pad and u-pin. Then check length, and modify the feed lips as necessary. I can't tell you anything else that is going to help you get this down, not that I won't tell you, but that it takes tools and equipment to move metal, and experience that I just can't explain from here.

    GE,

As mentioned I have an SPS tube that roughly measures about 165mm, if I use your 4mm base pad do you think I can get about 2 extra rounds. I am experimenting because I am in ZA and its a little difficult getting a variety of spares here.

  19. making a 170mm big stick w/ 4mm pads fit the gauge

i just took the plunge again to open division and have been reading quite a bit about 4mm grams pads on an sv big stick get 29 -30 rounds with 9mm major, also read that some people file something to make it fit.. my question is where do you file? ive read from Beven's thread that you dont file the pads you file the mag tube but where ? ....thanks

if this has already been covered kindly direct me where to find the info ....thanks again

If Beven does not file the pad the only other place to file is probably the feed lips at the top. This obviously depends how much needs to be filed off. Can you point me to Bevens thread where he discusses this.

    Mo,

i got lost on all of the threads that i have read...ill see if i can find it again, he did not start the thread he replied on it because someone wanted to file the basepad and Beven replied saying that it would make the plastic base pad too thin and might break it or something like that

No problem - thanks though. I agree that if you do file the plastic pads they will give in eventually when droppong them etc. I am busy with a 29 rounder. At the moment I have an SPS tube. This measures about 164-165mm, an SPS extended follower with spring. As for the pad, I have tried the SPS one and I do get 29, however it does not make the 170mm mark. I am currently experimenting with a dawson +1 international. The reason for this is that it is not plastic, but aluminium and I can file away within reason...

    Hope this helps...
