  1. Just read an easy way to determine if you're recoil spring is going solid (thanks to Gerry at Total Automation for this):

    Remove the slide.

Remove the recoil spring, guide rod, and barrel.

Replace the slide and retract it until it stops against the locking block.

Make a pencil mark somewhere across the slide & frame at this position.

Reinstall the barrel, guide rod, and recoil spring.

Retract the slide fully and compare the pencil marks.

If the slide mark is ahead of the frame mark, the recoil spring is going solid.

I put a piece of paper masking tape on the slide and frame and mark it.

Unless you just want to know max slide travel it would be easier to compare the stock configuration versus the after market. Mainly because assembling the gun with out the spring can be a pain in the butt!!! If you do want to assemble it without the spring I have found it easier (for me anyway) to assemble the gun upside down.

  2. Here is what I can tell with my experience with 3 SIG 22 conversions.

Ammo: Aguila Super Extra 40gr works best IMO. Aguila rimfire ammo is the only ammo that I have used that will go bang reliably when using 17lb mainsprings.

Of course CCI Mini Mags work great as well if you are not using a real light mainspring. With the Mini Mags if you get below 19lbs on the mainspring you may start to have a little trouble with reliable ignition.

Other than that as long as what ever ammo you are use is running a 40gr bullet at least 1200fps the SIG conversion should work OK. High velocity rounds with lighter bullets work also but in my experience the 40gr loads are more accurate. If you are running a lighter than stock mainspring you can possibly get by with slightly weaker ammo. You will just have to try that in your individual gun.

Keep the rails slightly wet with a light oil for lube. No grease. Grease will slow the 22 slide down and can cause problems.

The Traditional Match Elite is supposedly available in 9mm however I have never seen one.

  3. If it was a 1911, I would tell you to try a lighter recoil spring. 14 pounds is pretty heavy for 9mm. I had one that would do the exact same thing until I went with a lighter RS.

True for a 1911 but not for a link-less action gun.

I have a feeling that's it and the spring is a little too heavy.

No, the stock spring is approx 16 lbs. 14 should not be too heavy. If you go too light on the recoil spring it lets the gun unlock too quickly. This will have an adverse effect on accuracy.

One thing you might check is slide travel. Check the available slide travel with the stock spring and guide rod versus the aftermarket. I had an issue once with some Wolff springs that were three coils longer than the previous Wolff springs I had purchased (same weight). The longer spring was causing the gun to short-stroke slightly due to coil bind which was making for very weak ejection.

  4. As I mentioned in the accurizing SIGs thread.

1.085 OAL, 3.6gr Titegroup, Zero 125gr conical, Hornady HAP or XTPs will all yield 1.5" or better in my two X5 Allrounds at 50yds. Same load using SNS casting 125gr flat point will give me just under 2" at 50.

A few years back I ran MG 124gr CMJs. Not the most accurate bullet around plus they are slow especially compared to Zero bullets. I think with the MG CMJs the best OAL I came up with was 1.135" . I was using N320. I don't remember the charge of N320 off the top of my head but I want to say it was 3.8gr.

  5. The mainspring will rub on the inside of the grip. Or at least it did on the only gun I did that experiment with.

and I actually think the trigger pull is better like this.

Yes it will be. The angle of the strut is better and this allows for a more even trigger pull.

Wanting the best of both worlds I put the non-E2 parts combined with the E2 grips

Curious as to what makes you think the E2 grips are of any advantage? The grips are an advantage only if you can't reach the standard or short P226 trigger when the gun is equiped with the "normal" grips.

If you can reach the trigger properly with the normal grips you are much better off. The E2 grips do allow your hand to be more forward on the gun however this also forces your grip to be farther down the gun. This means you now have an even higher bore axis.

  6. Do you have an ETA and cost for the new generation X-Series?

I redesigned the magwell for a direct fit on the new X-Line guns but at this point I have no intention of making any aluminium parts. They just cost too much to make in small quantities.

The new X-Line guns use a mainspring base that includes the mounting boss for the magwell. This plus shortened moutning rails on the magwell allow the magwell to be swapped on and off without removing the grips. The mainspring base can be swapped for the "old" style and the old style magwell can then be used on the new X-Line guns.

  7. 1.085 OAL, 3.6gr Titegroup, Zero 125gr conical, Hornady HAP or XTPs will all yield 1.5" or better in my two X5 Allrounds at 50yds. Same load using SNS casting 125gr flat point will give me just under 2" at 50.

  8. Well, a properly fitted BarSto barrel will help a bit. Other than that there really isn't much else to do. I currently own 19 SIGs and the least accurate of the bunch will do 2" at 25yds with good ammo. My 4 9mm X5s will shoot less than 2" at 50yds.and my 40S&W X5 will shoot just a hair over 2" at 50yds.

If you can't get better than 3" at 25yds I would guess that you may have an ammo issue.

I would suggest you give Bruce Gray at GrayGuns or Gerry at Total Automation a call.

  9. Last I heard the first batch of Supermatch X-Line where suppose to arrive in the US sometime this month.

Apex Tactical is in the process of making magazine extensions for SIG magazines.

  10. Staudacher,

Thanks for the video. It appears that the factory extractor won't throw the shell either far enough or quick enough to keep it from hitting the slide while coming out. The GGI one appears to clear the shell cleaner. I have my X-Five at GGI right now. I have been on the fence

about the new extractor. I might have them change it out. What caliber are you shooting in the video?

    Jay

The guns are my two 9mm Allrounds. The black one still has the factory first gen extractor. While it has never failed to extract it has always been very erratic. It extracts better now that Grayguns has tuned it than it ever did before. The silver gun is newer and came with the 2nd generation factory extractor. It stopped extracting altogether so Grayguns transpanted one of their extractors into it. I now have around 700+ rounds through it with the new extractor. Everything from cheap russian junk to Hornady Critical defense it works perfect with everything I have been able to get my hands on.

  11. I got a smoking hot deal on my X5 Competition this summer in 9mm. $1600 for a never shot used gun a guy had in his safe. Found it on the SIG forums.

    I love it.

I friend has a tactical and had the Houge grips on it and I followed suit. I also put in a Dawson FO front sight. Love the gun. The MecGar mags in the 20 round flavor have to have the base pads shaved with a dremel slightly to fit.

I have sent a half dozen emails to the guy who supposedly makes the 24 round extensions but I have never heard back. Im still looking for a higher capacity mag since I shoot open in 3-gun.

I have seen a few places that advertise the SIG factory 25 round 9mm mags and am the notify list but still have not heard a peep.

Roger Sherman's magazine extentions are going to be produced by Apex Tactical now. http://www.apextactical.com/blog/index.php/random-apex/apex-tactical-specialties-fall-newsletter-2013/

  12. Can anyone tell me where to find a Standard Bladetech OWB holster, with DOH, for an X-5 All-Around? I'd like to find one in stock - I need it quickly for an upcoming match. Shooters Connection says it is a special order item, and direct from Blade Tech is rather confusing which item to order, and they call it "DOS" where everywhere else I've seen it's "DOH", so I'm not sure I'm ordering the right thing. Thanks!

I ordered a P226 version from Shooters Connection HERE..

I want the exact same thing for my X5.

Dawson shows the X5 holster and the DOH attatchment in stock.

  13. paperchasin,

One thing to note. JAFO has a Black Ice holster and your holster is the standard Blace Tech OWB holster. That is why JAFO's holster looks so much different from yours.

I called last week to order a Black Ice for my new X5 competition and they said they did not offer the Black Ice for it. I had to go the competition style route. I did order one but with a 6 week wait who knows? Im curious why the would not sell me a Black Ice. I even tried to call back a couple days later to speak with a different sales person but got the same reply. I would like to know the exact item numbers listed on you guys holsters.

The Black Ice holster for the AllRound should work with any X5.
