  1. Our x5 will not function reliably with low pf loads with the stock recoil spring.....they run just fine with any factory load, so try and bump it over 130, it needs some power to move the heavy slide back.

We have not looked into lower weight recoil springs, not sure where to get something similar in a lower weight than the 9mm requires, maybe Gray Guns would have such a beast. But you can avoid all that bumping the load up, not to mention that you would need to meet minimum pf for most organizations anyway.....and the x5 will still shoot quite softly....

Heavy slide?? The X5 slide is lighter than a standard P226 slide.

Replacing the the main recoil spring with a 14lb wolff works just fine for minor PF loads BTW.

  2. What about people who currently only shoot Steel Challenge with custom 9mm guns? Their options are to shoot Limited and Limited 10 minor as it stands right now. By allowing 9mm major in Limited 10, we will have a place for custom built 9mm guns.

If they are using 9mm gun custom built for steel challenge it is not very likely that the gun could stand up to 9mm major.

I would be all for allowing 357SIG scored as major in limited. 1) Factory ammo can make major 2)They would have no capacity advantage over 40.

  3. does the Elite come with an action job from the factory?

I compared an Elite Stainless at the gun shop to the regular 226.... big difference in the feel of the trigger. The Elite was much smoother.... I'm wondering if it's just had more polishing and TLC than the standard.

The Elite does have the SRT trigger. But it doesn't come from the factory with a "trigger job" so to speak. As far as how smooth the trigger is seems to be the luck of the draw. Some will be smooth and some will be a bit gritty.

  4. Just one port on the comp? It'll be a challenge to generate enough gas to work that efficiently. Why didn't they at least split it into to medium big ports instead of one massive one? R,

With the pair of inline ports in the barrel, the comp is best with one large chamber.

    Scott,

How hard was it to graft that DP magwell onto the X-5??

  5. I bought an X-5 last year to tinker with. the gun is beautiful, well made and is dead nuts accurate.

They are HEAVY, Slide inertia is quite noticeable with much felt recoil, even with USPSA major loads.

I want to shoot mine, i just need to address the magazine capacity issues and have the gun lightened up. I assume gray's gun does work on the beavertail to thin them up and allow a higher grip? Does he get rid of the 2 piece guide rod? Or is there anyone that can do this work at a reasonable price?

    RM

Bruce can get rid of the 2 piece buffer assembly. Although it is not really recommended for reasons he can explain. Give Bruce a call and I am sure he will be happy to explain everything.

With Roger Shermans basepad/spring/follower you can get 18rds of 40. I can also get 18rds using a modified follower from a SIG SCT magazine and it allows me to have a magazine that will still lock the slide back.

  6. All I'm seeing from the photo is the cut on the ouside of the dust cover, any idea how much weight this cut.

sorry I don't remember exactly how much weight was removed you can contCt Chris (cpufixers) or call Bruce Gray for specifics. On Chris's gun the beavertail was narrowed, the dust cover was lightened inside and out, and the trigger guard was reshaped.

  7. I will be sending mine to GGI in a couple weeks.

I will be having mine lightened but not to the extent that CPUIXER's gun was lightened.

  8. Anybody had a tune up package from GGI with the lightning cuts? Just wondering how much weight they trim from the gun. I think the X-5 could stand to cut at least 4-5 ounces. Does anybody else, like Matt, offer a tune-up pakage that includes trimming some weight.

look here at cpufixers post. X5s

  9. It works on my X5 Allround and my X5 comp. 18lb mainspring gives reliable igntion with CCI mini-mags. 17lb sets them off about 95+% of the time. The only ammo that consitently runs well for me with the conversions has been mini-mags and Aguila 40gr super extra.

Can you switch top ends between your two X5s? Just wondering if the All Around top would

fit on the SA lower. I am considering a Tactical for work but would like to use the better sights

on the AA for competition use.

    Craig

Yes, the top ends can be swapped. No issues there.

You can even use any regular P226 top end.

  11. JT,

I'll slide my neck into the noose......

Plaques / trophies to Division & Class winners per USPSA guidelines.

For the Large (guns, etc.) prizes:

Half of the large prizes to the winners of the largest (most shooters) Divisions (rewards skill, performance, etc.)

The other half of the large prizes are distributed by random drawing (rewards the other 95% of shooters for continuing to show up).

If you have 6 guns to give away, 3 go to the Division winners that contain the most shooters. The other 3 to random drawing winners.

    For the Small prizes:

Do a random draw prior to the match and distribute at registration table.

Other comments or suggestions on a prize table:

Try to get prize table donations as gift certificates instead of something that is "not useful" to everyone. An example of the potential upside for suppliers - One time I received a $50 certificate from Bagmasters and bought a $100 bag - worked out well for both of us.

I'll plan to attend the match regardless of the prize table. I'm there to shoot and have a good time.

As a lowly C-Class shooter, if I win a Large prize through performance or dumb luck, that's great. If not, see the previous line.

Instead of cash payback, buy more Large prizes (guns).

As a performance prize, return the registration fee to the Division winners.

    My $0.02......

    Good luck planning the match!

    ...that sounds good to me.

  12. staudacher> You might be onto something there with being too close to the Crono. I was pretty close to it when I chronoed those rounds. I will setup a little further back the next time I give the other loads a try. I can't change the OAL to a shorter case or it will cause feed issues in my gun. I am stuck with the 1.225 OAL to ensure reliable feeding.

You could also make a cardboard blast shield to put up in front of the chrono.

  13. Ok, I tried the 2.5gr drop and the rounds averaged 350fps

Are you positive of that?? I messed around with some low velocity loads before and ran into a problem with the muzzle blast tripping the chrono. moved from 8ft back to about 12-15ft and all the sudden my reading were in the neighborhood I had expected.

...and if that is the actual velocity you are getting I agree with Cy Soto your OAL is way to long for that light load. IMO

  14. 200gr Zero 3.8gr Clays ave. 848fps 1.15" OAL with with FC100 primer it showed slight pressure signs. switched to FC200 primers and everything looked good.

200gr BBI 3.6gr Clays ave 855fps 1.135" OAL no pressure signs with FC100 primer. very smokey

200gr Zero 3.6gr International Clays ave. 843fps 1.135" OAL FC100 primer no pressure issues at all

200gr BBI 3.6gr Inernational Clays ave. 877fps 1.135" OAL FC100 primer no pressure issues. almost no smoke

When I started playing with the International I was very surprised that it only took 3.6gr to make major. Since it is a slower powder I thought for sure it would require a heavier charge weight. Not sure why it doesn't.

All of my "bulk" chrono testing was with a S&W 610 and SIG P226.

  15. When I looked at the video of you shooting it didn't appear the recoil was too bad. I guess that was probably due to you holding the pistol very tight. I have a 7 1/2" SRH .454 Casull and wouldn't even want to think of the recoil on an Alaskan using a .454 cartridge. Recoil isn't that bad with the 7 1/2 barrel due to the overall weight of the pistol.

Shake Blueridge's hand and you'll get an idea why it didn't appear to recoil much.

  16. I'll win my division (possibly even overall revoolver) someday, and there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (From my competition that is) :P

Poor steel??? They knew what they were getting into when the got into the match. I never have to ask for a calibration check on the steel, that's for sure.

I use the Alaskan in IDPA, USPSA, and Steel Challenge (with lighter loads). It has taken some work to get to the level of accuracy that I want, but I am more confident in my shooting ability in general with revolvers and autos. I intend to try my hand at ICORE in the near future.

I have always used HKS speedloaders with my revolver. and though I plan to get some Blade-Tech speedloader pouches for competition, I'll still use the HKS pouches on a regular basis to keep in practice with them. I won't be changing the speedloaders to another type, by my choice.

I never get tired of seeing that video from the Memphis Charity Challenge. :roflol:

    Robert,

The video of you shooting the classifier at MCC is getting close to being the most viewed video I have posted on vholdr.com Looks like you are becoming a star!! I'll have to get your autograph next year!!!

  17. Perhaps I'm not thinking clearly, but why shouldn't I shoot matches with my carry gun?

Sure, the barrel is abbreviated and reloading from a speedloader may be slower, but, afterall, it is the gun I'm betting my life on.

I've checked around and a BUG gun match is held infrequently around these parts.

Besides, if my focus is on improving my skills instead of just beating the others by making the lowest score, shooting what I carry makes some kind of sense, doesn't it?

    Or maybe not.

No reason not to compete with a snubbie.

Here is Blueridge shooting a Ruger Alaskan snubbie in 45 Colt at the Memphis Charity Challenge.

  18. but I request that the Polish Plate Rack be banned!

lol..You know after watching my run on the plate rack you would think that I would never want to see it again either. However, after I calmed down a bit the rack really wasn't that bad.
