    • During my first CRO class the emphasis was on keeping the stage moving.
      • My friends who preceded me in getting their CRO cert said the emphasis was on stage design.
    • My first class did a stage on the last day for analyses.
    • I attended part of a second CRO class that was butted to a Multigun rules class.
    • Same emphasis on keep the stage on time; scenario-----shooter objects, RO called and renders decision, Shooter disagrees ask for CRO opinion, if CRO agrees with shooter so be it, if disagrees and shooter not satisfied-call range manager, pull the target if necessary.
    • Don't fall behind.

With emphasis on keep the match on schedule and very little on all the rules just those rules which pop up the most, I am not sure of how it would advantage a shooter.

This seems to upset you for some reason. Sure Taran is a good shooter and has lots of results in smaller pistol events and multi-gun events, but by any objective measure, Dave Sevigny is a tier higher when it comes to pistol shooting. Dave is an elite shooter, one of the very best, so comparing their scores major/minor doesn't make sense, because one would expect Dave to be ahead of Taran by MORE than the difference between major and minor. That's all. It's just math.

Not really upset, just setting the record straight.

    FROM ABOVE:

    To be fair?

How many different shooting disciplines does Dave shoot? The breadth and depth of Taran's skill is well documented Dave's is not well known.

Go back to your original assertion.  Dave is elite shooter and Taran is what(?) a very good shooter.

Not elite USPSA or IDPA shooter but ELITE SHOOTER.  THEN it became pistol shooter.  You changed your criteria when it became apparent you were misinformed.

    🤣

I am invoking the GManBart Theorem.

if you know of Taran ever placing in the top 5 at a national handgun event, please post. I searched without success, and I have personally seen him shoot at several nationals. Sevigny otoh was in the top 5 of the first 2 nationals I looked at.

I have personally shot at his range around once a week for a few years.  Traveled with him to Nationals and the Desert Classic (Area2).

So I have probably seen him shoot more than several times.

Your statement was Dave was an elite shooter and Taran was just very good.

Again the breath and depth of Taran's accomplishments put him easily in the elite category of shooters.

I am not disparaging Dave for his accomplishments.

uuhhh.... When you said Dave S. you're talking Dave Sevigny right? Quick google, he's won 13 USPSA nationals, 9 IDPA Nationals, a IPSC world Championship, a bunch or steel challenge nationals, NRA action pistol nationals, bianchi cup nationals etc. etc.

Unless you're referring to a different Dave S.

    You got the right guy.

Single-stack is the only division allowing Major/Minor where they are remotely competitive with each other.   Even so, the extra 2 rounds (25% more!) is so rarely worth it, it's news when a top SS shooter shoots Minor at a match voluntarily.

Harder paper partial and far targets are an advantage with Major because there's a whole lot more scoring area that's worthwhile.  Tons of steel or stages designed by 10-round shooters is where the minor gun works better.

The last sentence is spot on.

Just as a side note: (off the point) I know a lot of shooters look to expand their round capacity in their mags; cutting springs, expanding the mag, different followers just to get an extra round or two.  Seems counter intuitive that people look to increase mag capacity and at the same time saying it does not matter.  Apparently it matters to them.

J Williams was second at A2 (around 2017) shooting minor--🤣 as a minor.

sure,  but you used an example comparing an elite pistol shooter with a pretty good pistol shooter. it is entirely irrelevant what other disciplines Taran shoots. I would expect dave to beat Taran by 5-10% in any iron sights pistol match in the last 10 years. That pretty much washes out any difference in magazine capacity or major/minor, and it makes your comparison not very valid.

Are you saying Taran is not an elite pistol shooter?

Is this a conclusion based on evidence and facts?

Did you poll "elite" shooters and they concluded Taran was only a pretty good pistol shooter and not in their class?

    🤣😂🤣

to be fair, Dave is a much better shooter than Taran, at least he has been in the time I've been in the sport (since 2012).

    To be fair?

How many different shooting disciplines does Dave shoot? The breadth and depth of Taran's skill is well documented Dave's is not well known.

I believe one year Taran won something like 15 guns across all disciplines.

The point of the thread was mag capacity not who is a better(?) shooter.

  8. I have seen this play out in reality:

Mid Coast Dual Championship at Hogue Range many years ago.  Taran shot SS major (8 rounds were the max back then) Dave S shot Production with 10 rounds.

The difference in the points were dramatic.  Dave said because he had two extra rounds he was able to take more risks.  I think at that match more than 60% of the targets had some sort of cover (no shoot or hard).

Years later at Area 2, several SS shot minor.  The insurance of two extra rounds helped with taking risks---for those unfamiliar with the A2/Desert Classic there are many difficult stages that require risk/reward analyses.  A statement from a M class shooter was "I don't shoot 9 any faster than my 40, it was having the extra rounds.  Many swingers in that match inspired anxiety 🙂 .

All in all kind of a dumb question IMO.

  9. I have several JP and I am very happy with them.

I brag about their reliability and accuracy.

During a large PCC match, a certain brand of 147s failed to feed properly.  Strange since all other brands and bullet combinations worked well in previous matches.  Lesson learned for me.  So 3 stoppages on about 4,000 rounds fired is fine.

I have RO'd several PCC matches and matches with PCC, my limited observations are JPs are more reliable.  My friends shoot the Sig and like it.

  10. I just did a detail clean on my X5 Legion.

The feed ramp has not been polished to a mirror like with my SVIs.

No issue with feeding; 115, 124, 125, 147.  No difference between factory and handloads.

Handloads are VV320 and Zero bullets (mostly).

One side of the ramp being thicker is not an issue.  I think I have several barrels like that. I'll look later this week.

You might try wrapping 600, 800, 1000, and 1500 grit sand paper around an empty piece of brass.  That should preserve the feed ramp geometry while smoothing the ramp. Tedious work but it is effective.  Then polish with rouge compound.

Put a new barrel in it, is a typical answer.

Springer Precision does excellent work as does Gray.  Send it off to a known smith to get it right.

  11. I have both: astigmatism and 510C-green. I wear contacts with no correction for the astigmatism

Love the 510C.  It is on my JP PCC.

In the AZ sun the green shows up great.  Recently, at the PCC match it was very cloudy and the brightness overwhelmed my ability to see the plates.  I had to turned it down and the world was right again.  The adjustments are good on the 510C.

I have DPP on my CO guns which is nice but when Santa comes I might switch to the Holosun for my CO.  I really like the circle dot for shooting steel.

I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night so I can't answer the legal question.

The paper trail of "bad behavior" is the record of multiple DQs for safety violations.  That is one of the many reasons that DQ'able offenses should not be ignored at local matches, even for new shooters.  In my non-lawyer opinion, the best protection any MD or RO has is to enforce the rulebook's safety rules without exception.

Doing otherwise is an open door to future problems.

    Hi George,

I did not articulate my thought well enough.  Paper trail locally is perfect for the Club/Range.  It documents the concerns of the group.

Internal communications should be treated as personal and confidential   Much like how major companies handle personnel matters.  Many companies will only give dates of employment, confirm job titles. Some will state eligible for rehire and salary (I worked for Deloitte and they ask permission on quoting salary as they generally won't do it with out permission) although most give a pat answer eligible for rehire. It is all about Risk Management and reduction of liabilities.

When personal/personnel actions are communicated externally is where the defamation laws may come into play.

I am in agreement with you conclusions about handling the matter internally.

Not stated in the rules, but IMO any shooter who participates in USPSA matches who is banned from from a range/venue (for safety concerns) should be reported to the USPSA Section Coordinator and Area Director.  They would then be able to inform other USPSA MDs in the area in case that individual just migrates his safety problems elsewhere.

If he is banned by a USPSA club MD, the rules require a report to HQ.

George, are there legal liabilities that might come into play; defamation law provides legal recourse.
Written evidence is a paper trail.  Verbal could be considered hearsay unless several people say they heard essentially the same thing.  There was a case in Tx a few decades ago that cost the company around $14M because a manager defame an employee.  Things have gotten worse.

  14. Between Rowdy and Cha, they pretty much hit on everything.

Feedback is critical, regardless if it is positive or negative. Just be honest in your assessment.

I have given and taken a lot of training, giving presentations in national settings.  The positive feedback validated a lot of what I wanted to communicate, the negative feedback helped me do better the next time.  I was always looking to improve my teaching abilities.

  15. Lee Undersize Die in second station (1050) factory crimp in last.
My 929 does not like Zero JHP.  Round nose seems to load smoother for me.
Actually, after adjusting the trigger spring I am getting reliable ignition.
I have been trying using different stamps with no issues.
I received some polymer moon clips that work just fine.
    Also Federal SPM for primers.
Shout out to Kodiak Precision for the excellent work.

Then in that case (excuse the pun), if a shooter's gun failed to eject, i.e. left an empty case in the chamber and the shooter pried out the empty case with his pocket knife without first determining whether it was a partial case head separation, the shooter would be subject to DQ.

So how many on this forum should have been DQ'd for that offense?  I can think of one PCC only match where 98% of the match would have been disqualified!  LOL!

    Nolan

That was not my quote you cited but in the original thread.

  17. Very interesting thread.

    Words and definitions matter.

As a point of contention (see below underlined text), I would suggest the wordings from the exam ....or solid obstruction....does not lend itself to define 'solid'.

    • The bullet is a solid obstruction. Fine
    • Case separation is NOT a solid obstruction I would offer since if the barrel was out of the gun and looking down the barrel I could see light at the other end.  The barrel is not solidly blocked. A potentially correct finding and conclusion.

However, weeks later (as I take the NROI exam) I visit the definition of a Squib:  "A bullet or solid obstruction lodged inside the barrel of a firearm."

Being that the spent case with the partial head separation impedes access through the barrel, it meets the definition of a solid obstruction.  As such a case head separation during a COF and ANY attempt to clear, be it with the L shaped squib rod or with a pocket knife would be a DQ'able offense under 10.5.2.
