  1. I got my 550B today after a bit of scrimping and saving ( and a small loan from the 401k),and have a slight issue. The instructional video is VHS format. I dug the VCR out of the garage, and 30 seconds into the tape, the VCR got hungry and ate 3 feet of tape. #*&! No biggie...retrieve the cassete from the hopefully sated POS Magnavox VCR, remove the damaged section, splice it, retension the rollers, continue on with the show. 2 minutes later crunch crunch crunch..more tape consumed. Again with the splice and a little prayer thrown in for good measure. After the third time of this, I gave up.

I know this is a long shot, (no pun intended), but has anyone converted this to DVD format? I am willing to pay for media/shipping, as I would love to get to actually USE my new 550 instead of just admiring it on the bench.

    Thanks folks!

  2. This would be a complete non issue if Beretta USA would simply etch an arrow on the right side of the pistol pointing to the rear to show the direction to turn to unlock the barrel lug. Better yet, don't let King Kong torque the thing to 500# in the first place!! Other than that, a replacement trigger spring is this one needs to make it ready for the next range day.

  3. You need to quit buying stuff for her and let HER pick out what she wants. Pay the man what it costs to take it home and be happy. If she wants a gagillion dollar open gun, buy it. It really is that simple.

Sometimes we try to help other people (read:women) a lot more than they need, they have preferences and ideas just like we do. Cut her loose to do her own thing, it is a better way.

    +1

AMEN and HALLELUJAH!!!! This man knows what he is talking about!!

BTW Honey, can I have a gagillion dollar open gun?? Oh yeah that's right....I've all ready got one. ;)

***Words of advice....when you get your new gun DO NOT LET YOUR WIFE SHOOT IT!! If she shoots it, you will lose it! We are quite happy (shooting wives) when we don't know what we are missing. ;) Just my 2 cents...not speaking for ALL shooting wives.

+2 to that. I introduced my wife to shooting 3 months ago. She now owns and shoots 4 different pistols when we go to the range. Shooting 2-3 times /week with her is why I ordered a 550B from Brian last night. :D Hell, she's so hot to trot that SHE is building me a new workbench in the garage, and wants to be actively involved in the reloading process. Credit cards were already blown out buying ammo the last couple of months, so I borrowed funds out of the 401K for the 550.

Let her shoot all she wants..it's how I ended up with my 550B enroute !

  4. Ok... took it to my gunsmith at my local range..he said " I'd shoot the hell out of it and send it back to Beretta dirty, this is ridiculous". I applied Break Free where I could, and did in fact shoot the hell out of it.

Upon arriving home, I gave it one last try, and lo and behold! The wheel turned with a few light taps of the hammer, and it was broken down nicely.

Shot 4 1/2" groups at 50' , and was shredding the 10 ring after some major realignment of the sights. Thanks for the reply, Stony Lane, it gave me the confidence to try it one more time. :D

  5. Buying a new pistol should be a happy experience, and always has been...until today.

The wife picked up a Beretta Neos at the gunhsow today, and I wanted to familiarize us with it and lubricate before heading to the range this afternoon. I dutifully read the manual, and gave it my best shot at field stripping. Mentally, I could hear a buzzer go off with an imaginary person saying "failure" after 5 minutes of shredding my thumbs attempting to turn the wheel with the lock depressed.

A 5 minute break, and a quick search on youtube brought me to a video showing disassembly. "How much easier can it get", I thought, beginning to smirk. Umm... I had done exactly what was shown. The video is here:

    Youtube how to

Tried again...failure. I read some of the comments on the video regarding using a hammer (!!!!) the first time to get the barrel lug to unlock. Any pistol I have to use a hammer on from the factory is not worthy of being in my house. I tried a tack hammer and a spare M-16 rod piece that I had. The tip of the rod shattered.

Anyone else seen this or heard of such a thing?

  6. I discovered, when I was still a wee one running around the orange groves behind my house with my Daisy, (which I still have BTW), that although I was VERY RH, it was MUCH easier to learn to shoot LH, due to a very dominant L eye. I trained my self to shoot both ways with a long gun, but with my handgunning, I was not as successful. Instead of squaring off on the target, I would turn my body 15 degrees or so to the left. It drove my firearms training sereants insane, but they finally relented when I showed it was a much more natural shooting position for me. They laughed mercilessly as I caught hundreds of rounds of brass in the face from my M-16 as well when shooting it LH.The evil of being very left eye dom, and very RH dom.

  7. Here's one solution guaranteed to make you scream.

After a day at the range in the Army (80's -90's), we used carb cleaner, brake cleaner, or for a filthy M-60 barrel, a soaking in a sink full of Lime Away. After a few thousand rounds in a few hours, these are the methods we used. My gunsmith nearly fell out of his chair at hearing this, but hell, it worked.

  8. I caught up with my shooting pal, and he refreshed my memory... it was the slide stop that was replaced on his that seemed to make it run like it should. I have no idea what the resolution was for the other M&P 9MM. From what he was told, this was not an uncommon issue for the MP 9MMs sold in early 2006. The frame has been slightly altered from what he told me for the 2007s as well. The design has had a year to mature, and there is no substitute for having thousands upon thousands of instances of customer feedback to tweak an item. Apparently, they were listening this time around

Like I said, I thought it felt nice in my hand in the house, and also sending 'em downrange, even the Magtek +P+ rounds didn't have the usual sting..sweet recoil, follow up shots made easily, as with most 9's. No issues since it came back, but the opening CS experience with SW was nightmarish, and not something I have the patience for.

I may still pick one up next year, dear spouse allowing. Time will tell.

  9. So with a little effort 9mm brass cost is basically zero.

I invariably take home a few hundred bright shiny new 9MM cases every trip to the range because some folks are just plumb lazy, and I don't mind picking up a few extra boxes every week. When I finally have enough to buy my 550B, I should have 10-15K 9MM to start with for free courtesy of my firing line neighbors. B)

  10. Mondays Imake it a point to send a hundred down range on my lunch hour. I am SO relaxed by the time I get back into indentured servant mode, that the last 3 hours just drift on by until it's miller time, er, ah, evening range time.

Good therapy indeed, and as for the OP, good for you, glad to hear it!

  11. Thanks for the welcome, and don't mean to come acrss as a troll, no offense meant, and hopefully none taken.

My observations were based on two known incidents, actually. The first was one of my shooting buddies bought a new M&P in 9MM last spring. I was insanely jealous until we got to the firing line. He was unable to empty more than two magazines without a failure to eject. We tried, Wolf, WWB, CCI, and Rem. UMC. Same results pretty consistently. Of course we went back to the local shop where he had purchased it, and had them do the return.

Speaking with the gunsmith and the owners, they had sold two of the M&Ps that week, and BOTH were already being returned for the same issue. It was almost 4 weeks before he got it back. The shop owner apparently went round and round with S&W over the issue, which I why I'm glad I was just on the sidelines on that one.

Since then, to S&W's credit, his M&P works as it should, and he's all smiles again. I even went through a few boxes with it, and it's all I thought it should have been in the first place. Beautiful backstrap, the large one fit my hand like it was meant for my big paws. I was just making an observation based on my own dealings, albeit from a distance. I think there was an issue that for whatever reason slipped past QC, but has since been rectified.

Just got back from the range a few hours ago, 3 pistols cleaned, one to go....Peace :D

  12. Stupid question...

    What defect??

    Y

ANY defect..specifically magazine catches not engaging all the time, failure to eject issues, slides locking open with rounds still in the magazine, etc. Some folks have zero issues, some minor, and some are wishing they'd bought something else.

Like anything manufactured, defects are a distinct possibility, but for something that my life may one day depend on, I would prefer far and few defects, and if they are known, fix it fast. THAT was my biggest fear with S&W's service, slow, foot dragging responses. BTW, that's also what dinged the Walther purchase..... IF it ever had any problems, I would be dealing with the same folks.

  13. ...First post after reading here for a few weeks...

The M&P made the final 3 of my list as I went out to purchase my first firearm in 14 years. The other 2 finalists were an FN FNP-9, and the Walther P99-QA. These three made my list on the basis that they all "made my firing hand happy". It felt good in my hand..naturally swinging up into a perfect sight picture every time. I have some large paws, and finding one that I could conceal AND get all of my fingers around it for a good grip was important.

I was looking for a combo range/carry weapon, and the only thing that knocked the M&P out of contention was the factory/warranty service. I ended up going with the FN, and after 1500+ rounds in 2 weeks with zero issues, and 4" groups at 25 yards, I'm happy. This is after not shooting since '93 when Slick Willie C paid us all to exit the army after GW1.

It seems like a nice pistol, but from what I have heard and seen other friends experience, it will require a divine act to get S&W to act on a defect. I couldn't bear the thought of wrestling with that kind of tomfoolery, so I bought what I did. Just my $.02.
