  1. I figured everything out through trial and error.....lots of error. I was so inspired by the learning curve that I have contemplated creating a thread titled "Things NOT to do when you first start reloading with a Dillon 550B". This would be a boon to new reloaders who have no idea how this works. I have been successful for the most part in spite of a bunch of smushed primers, split cases, spilled powder, etc. All avoidable pitfalls with a tad more knowledge.

  2. Why was I late coming back from lunch? Honestly, I got a flat tire. Why in the &^$ck does my Mazda 3 have V rated tires on it? I don't plan on doing 150MPH + in it ever. To match the three remaining tires, $250 did the trick. Ouch. That is a lot of new brass that won't be visiting my reloading bench.

  3. Being relatively new to this forum, and damn new to reloading, I just sent my first batch of handiwork downrange at lunch today. I would never had had the inkling to even attempt to load my own without finding this place by happenstance a month ago. Good master Enos sold me a 550, and after today's experience of seeing them tearing up paper, I am thrilled. The first things I had to do:

60 second Drill - 64 rounds I was trying to see if I could cause a failure . I am happy to report zero faults ( at least with the ammo itself) :D

    15 second drill - 16 rounds

I know this is probably glacier like speeds compared to some here. Well, probably most here, but hell, it is a vast improvement.

This was my first batch of ammo, and I think it'll be a good one for high volume practice. I used 115grain RN cast lead from Bulletmeister, 3.4 grains of TG, Federal Small pistol primers, and all the acceptable brass I could scrounge from my nearest range and clean for free. OAL varied quite a bit, being seriously mixed brass, but I checked every single round with a case gauge before placing it in the range tray.

Absolute minimal recoil, which made it easier to work on my new grip, but it did smoke like a '73 Trabant. It was an indoor range, and thankfully I was alone, or everyone on the line might have been asphyxiated. Zero concussive effect, which is usually somewhat of a problem in such a confined space.

Keep in mind I was away from firearms for quite a few years, but seemed to have picked it up again just fine. Good Uncle Sam broke me of wanting to shoot for a long time. I guess I needed a few years to come to my senses. This is FUN.

Thanks again to all of you who have posted such great information for consumption...all of my lurking has paid off.

  4. Not to HJ your thread GentlemanJim, but.....Just shot off my first batch of this in 9MM with no issues except for one of the 100 or so had an off center primer hole and nearly cost me my decapping pin. Other than that, worked like a champ. Maybe the .223 is flaky from them, but for 9MM range scrap, it worked for me. Full report on first full batch of reloads forthcoming tonight with pics.... amazing power lunch.

  5. I don't know where Sedro Wooley is, nor does it matter, I suppose. I'm just glad that another one of my brethren has made it back home safe to his family. It was beautiful to see, thanks for sharing!

  6. As one of the few Florida natives still around here that I know of, I have always bought 2 new cases of water every year...until this year, that is. On a recent backwoods expedition, I got to test out my Katadyn filter. It pays for itself the first time you need it (and we did, big time), and is definitely something that brings peace of mind if you live an area where storms have a bad tendency to knock out power and utilities.

In a more forum related topic, after the local looting we had around here a few years ago, it brought me back into shooting again. I just needed an excuse to pick it back up, I guess. A 500 rd/week habit now, and thank you Mike Dillon for giving me a progressive reloader that I can use to avoid bankruptcy.

  7. +1 for buying from Brian......my 650 friggin rocks......now I can load faster than I can shoot.... ;)

+1000000 to that :D he got me taken care of nicely with my 550B. This is my first time reloading, and he made it all so easy...no unneccessary items, and one or two things that I left out. Between the man himself and the excellent folks here, you'll be well taken care of.

  8. The name of her story should have been... "I used to have a spine and now I don't".

On a lighter note, reading that while wolfing down lunch caused me laugh so hard that I inhaled a sesame seed down the wrong pipe. :o:P

seriously, though, my mother must have recently read that article as well, as it sounds like her story. 60+ years later, she's forgotten her roots, and thinks I am a loon for getting a CCW.

  9. Good luck with your surgery. I had LASIK performed a few years ago, and went from not being able to see how many fingers I was holding up to 20/10 and 20/20. I just started shooting again since I had it done, and it will take a bit of adjustment on my part, but it was money well spent.

The funny thing is, I had to pay 3K in cash out of pocket for the procedure, and 4 months later my company's insurance program started to cover the procedure for the cost of my $30 deductible. :o

  10. Since neither the spouses back nor mine allow for much hiking anymore, I took up shooting again. Seeing how much fun I was having, she picked it up a few months ago, and goes to the range with me 2 days a week. We have kept her targets from every session with a time/date written on it, and watching her progress this way is amazing. She enjoys cleaning up her pistols after a few hours on the firing line, and is also a spent brass collection and sorting demoness. Looking at the shotgun-like patterns on the early targets and looking at the fist sized holes in the targets after last night's session was a revelation. Fun to watch, and makes me smile. :D

  11. Yep... I remember going through this with my dad from years past... I guess that's how I picked up all kinds of stuff from the 50-s to the 80's. Nothing like shifting 30 years worth of music in 3 minutes. Congrats and enjoy!

  12. 8" hi-viz..the nice ones that show impact instantly. Pricey, yes, but I accquired a bunchof 11X17 ones nominally for rifle zeroing, with a diamond in each corner, and one in the center. I like the instant feedback, and they are ideal for the lunchtime shoots where I send a hundred downrange and make it back to my desk in an hour.

  13. Hope you had a good snicker at my expense.

    Jim

Actually two snickers from me... reading this thread yesterday, then again this evening  Thanks for sharing... I'm waiting for my first AWOL primer. I actually counted the live ones going in the pickup tube today.

Why is girlfriend pissed? If she had been cleaning that room properly it never would have happened.

** Starting the serpentine manuver now ***

D@#n, have you got a brass pair  Hopefully the Mrs. doesn't see this or she'll think I've fallen in with hooligans. Again. :P

  14. Hmmm.. I always did enjoy watching paint dry. Maybe because that meant it was finally beer:30 :P

I no longer have a tape to watch, and I am having trouble with the setup, more specifically, the powder setup. I was hoping to see it in nice color on a 47" inch screen to help me with setup and use. I don't have any friends that reload, so I am at a loss for the moment. Oh well, time will tell. Thanks for the words of encouragement.

  15. Being relatively new to the forums just means I have more tears of laughter to shed as I dig up old threads here at BE. DJPolo, I havent the ..umm...nerve to waste a fine box of M&C with that stuff. I was broken of it years ago. Thanks for the memories, though!

  16. Excellent edit, my hat's off to you. Well put with just enough wit to make it sting as it exits their empty bleating crainiums through the wind tunnels called ears.

It is always theoretically possible to ask to be added to their mailing list with email addresses such as : clueless@leftist.net, limpwristed@sheeple.org, etc. Depending on the strength of their mailing datbase filters, it might overwhelm the dolts with enough bogus entries.

Not that I would condone such a thing, but it is possible.
