The Caspian HiCap frame does that, it use slightly modified 9mm CZ magazines.  Unfortunately that magazine design has the base pad retaining lips turned inward rather than outwards like the 2011 magazines, making them unsuitable for increasing capacity by extending the base pad.  For a long time 170mm magazines had to be made by cutting and welding 2 magazines together.  I think it was Mecgar that finally started making 170 CZ tubes, but they were pretty hit or miss.  I haven't kept up on who is making 170 mags for the CZ/Tanfo/Caspian guns... since I retired my Caspian Open gun 20+ years ago.

I think mbx makes Caspian 170s from time to time... I wasn't able to get the one I have to work in my gun (the weldups you eluded to worked fine) but its a high quality mag like all the mbx stuff and just needs some fiddling which I haven't had the time or inclination to do so far.

Also look at the grip safety, the rib sticks out a bunch

i have an old mclearn gun that he did a frame reduction, I don’t know what he did but it does feel smaller in the hand

you might check if he still does that kind of work

Yea i was going to suggest checking with Matt. Not sure who else is actually actively building guns who would be as familiar with that frame  as Matt (since Rich who commented above is retired.) Maybe Fred Craig if he's still around.  Or Jim Anglin (Sailor's Custom) is probably retired.

  3. That kinda depends on what part of the grip you are looking to reduce.

You can get away with reducing the thickness of the front strap a fair bit... I would stay away from the trigger track area (as it's pretty thin there and in the distant past there were frame redesigns to fix cracking in that area.)

What about this? Tap for threads, install allen-head plug screws that won't disrupt the rifling, then loctite.

That might prove tricky depending on if scheumann cut the ports since the hole profile of the ports in a factory ported (hybrid style) barrel are conical in profile.

I'll be shooting a JP5 this weekend at the AZ PCC match and doing a review on GunsAmerica.  I am very excited since I love the recoil of my MP5 but hate the trigger and reloading it.

I'll be curious to get your take...  Like you I like how the MP5 shoots but not a whole lot about the ergonomics of it.

Well on the 170mm the lips are off by quite a margin, back is .335, and the front is .357, so if I need to make it tighter, idk how to do that without making the back too small or how to make the back bigger without the front being too big

I've always followed the instructions (and used the tools) from the Dawson mag tuning kit I bought many years ago (I think Atlas has some videos posted as well)  If you search around on the forum I think you can find some advice on substitutes for the tools....  If you don't need to do a bunch of mags an MBX 170 or sending the mag off to grams engineering (I don't know if he still tunes mags?) to get it tuned might be a more cost effective option.

Hello, with the old STI 170mm magazines get the Grams spring and follower but also get the Shooters Connection/Hardy metal spacers. I don't glue in the spacer so the magazine can be cleaned easier. Make sure you get the Grams 9mm follower kit. Thanks, Eric

Yep the hardy spacers are much better that the plastic ones...

    Hello gentleman,

I have gotten a used JL Hardy shorty recently from a different forum. It was used and I’ve had some issues with the magazines, mostly just rounds diving into the feed ramp and not working unless I only put 20 rounds in a 170mm mag.

one thing to note, as I can’t find specific info about these mags here on benos, my two 140mm mags are old STI mags with the spacers, I also have one 170mm mag of the same type with the spacer. that particular 170mm is the one with the most issues. 140’s don’t really have issues but will be checked and tuned as necessary.

The MBX mag doesn’t have the feeding issue as much as the old STI’s do, and yes I’ve watched all the Atlas videos on tuning and have some tools and a bench vise on the way from Amazon.

    1. my question is, do I need different types of springs for the old STI mags with spacers rather than basic 2011 Mag springs found on common websites like shooters connection, BSPS etc. and what are y’all’s suggestions.

    2. Should I attempt tuning my own or is their a service available for getting mags tuned professionally, I figure I’ll have to do some stuff my self but if somethings really out of wack, who would I send them to? If anyone.

Since you don't know the age of the spring for the spacered 170 get a https://www.gramsengineering.com/product/fks9-13/

And start there (shooters connection usually has them.)  that kit is designed to work with spacered mags.

  9. The ergos on the mpx are far superior (and more AR like) to say the MP5 (which defines crappy trigger.)

But having some experience with parts breakage running an MPX in USPSA. If my life depended on it I would take the HK from the safe instead of the MPX.

I'd love to try the BT just never had the chance.

Just to be clear a 95 grainer is never " at major" regardless of velocity Appendix D1 lin3 3 Minimum bullet weight 112 grains for major power factor.

Yep... And if you wonder why, I gather that 9x25s with light bulletson steel is why.

Thanks for the reply ZZT.  I have to stick with the 10mm though.  I have 20K of NIB brass in 10mm kicking around for 20 plus years.  Also the 2011 holds 23 rounds in the magazine which is what I'm looking for. I unfortunately, need a scope to see with. Like an Aimpoint.

I have a ton of 180 grainers cast up.  Sadly it looks like a comp would be useless then

I suppose if you have to shoot lead (and it's cast hard enough for the velocity) you could add gas checks to keep the vaporized lead out of the comp.
