  1. I can't speak intelligently on the pump, but for a lever action you can't beat a Marlin 39A. I have a Golden Mountie made in 1967 and it's amazing. Still feeds and shoots smooth as ever and while not always relevent, the ability to shoot .22LR and .22short is nice to have. The easy breakdown and cleaning of it is a nice plus as well!

  2. Well I'm glad I sparked a little discussion on the difference between scenario 1 and 2. And yes, I fully agree with the call made by both the stage RO and the Range Master. While shooter 2's bullet went down range and hit the berm, I would still consider it without a doubt unsafe gun handling. Thanks to all!

  3. First, the Area 8 match was a great match and my hat goes off to the staff, Seth, Alan, and Gary. It was a blast. As one of the shooters was DQed for unsafe gun handling, I wanted to explore that vs. other types of "early, unintentional" shots.

Stage 2 required 1 shot per target, mandatory reload, and one shot per target with strong hand only for string one. The same for string 2 except it was freestyle, reload, weak hand. An open shooter fired his 6 shots, performed a reload, and as he transitioned to his weak hand fired what was obviously an early shot. The shot did not hit the target, but did impact on the berm. Nothing was made of it and it was just scored a miss and we all had a smirk thinking how lucky he was.

On a later stage, the start position had the pistol on a shelf that had a ledge around it and was attached to a wooden wall(muzzle was facing downrange in the box). A shooter reached for his gun, gripped it low and his trigger finger found the inside of the trigger guard instead of the side of the frame. He fired a shot while the gun was still in the box. The round went through the hard cover and impacted in the berm at the back of the range. He was disqualified for Unsafe Gun Handling.

I believe according to USPSA rules an AD is a shot landing within 3 meters of the shooter or in an unsafe direction such as over the berm. There is no rule or penalty for shooting through hard cover (disregarding the scoring process if that round hits a target). So my question is, what is the real difference between scenario 1 and 2 as they both fired an early shot, which was not within 3 meters of them, and impacted the berm at the back of the range. Does the decision to DQ shooter 2 for Unsafe Gun Handling fall solely on the discretion of the Range Master? I am by no means questioning the decision of the ROs, CROs, or Range Master. I am just curious of where the real difference is between the two if neither was a danger to anyone on the range?

    Look forward to your help!

  4. I used to load W231, but after finishing my last 4lb jug I'm ready for a cleaner powder that's easier to find. I picked up some Clays, not Universal, and am looking for a good major PF load using a 230gr FMJ. My Reloading manual has data for Universal, but not normal Clays and Hogden's website doesn't have a recipe for my bullets. Anyone out there using Montana Gold 230rd FMJ with Clays for Major PF? I appreciate the help!

  5. I run a Kimber .22 conversion on my Springfield TRP. While it does take the extra time to swap back and forth from .22 to .45, I find the ability to have the exact same grip, trigger, and sight picture when I practice with .22 allows me to reproduce everything (grip, draw, presentation, sight picture)when I switch to .45. Exact reproduction of those things helps with achieving the same results in accuracy. My $.02

  6. Shot Area 8 yesterday and it never fails, I'll tell myself over and over smooth is fast and to not think I'm faster and better than I actually am. Stage 3 had 4 crazy fast clam shells activated with a pressure pad. Even after watching a handful of shooters in front of me and knowing I wasn't fast enough to get all 4 shots on both before they closed, and telling myself over and over I wasn't going to try it...I did. Dropped 2 misses and a No-shoot. I swear every one of my match screw ups are ones I see coming, tell myself not to do, and end up doing it anyway!

-Was still a great match though!

  7. I went through a similar situation when I started shooting competition. What I was told by my mentor, and found out first hand, is that while we know that they eyes can only focus on one focal plane at a time. when you have 3dot white/fiber optic/tritium front and rear sights the brain doesn't immediately focus on a specific plane. You have to tell it to focus on the front sight. While a tritium front/rear set up is great for a low light defensive situation, I will never use it for competition again.

I sent my 5in XD to Springer Precision and had them put a red FO (fiber optic) front and all black target adjustable rear sights from Dawson Precision on it. I couldn't believe what a difference it made in fast target acquisition. I won't say that a FO front is the best because I also have a SV limited gun with black front blade and black adjustable target rear. It is also a great set-up. I think either is a better setup than FO front and rear or 3 dot system. And the thinner Dawson and SV front sight post is also a great help with fast target acquisition. It can't hurt to ask a few guys at your next match to try out their guns with a couple rounds and see what sight set-up you prefer. I have yet to meet a shooter that won't let a newer competitor try out their gear.

    Hope this helps!

  8. Well for what it's worth, I just bought a SLP Mark 1. It's just a bit heavier than a Benelli M1, shoots a decent bit softer, and is ready to run out of the box for the most part. I believe that that SX2 is the same gun. I'd say it's good to go.

Thanks for all the comments. I just picked up a FN SLP MK1 at a shop this week. They said it was used, but I say otherwise. And it came with an extra light load piston and 2 extra chokes. Looking forward to getting a range test done. Thanks!

Range tested my new FN SLP MK1 today. Ran 150 rounds through it. Started out with 2 boxes of high velocity performance trap loads. Then 2 boxes each of winchester and federal bulk 100rd packs. I had the light piston in it and it ran like a champ. Perfect every time. I hope that it stays that way, because if it does I think the SLP will be a great shotgun. Thanks for the information and input!

  10. I apologize for the hijacking - I didn't realize it got off topic so quickly.

    Sorry sad.gif

It's all good. Was just looking to make sure I found some useful info. Feel free to continue the slightly off topic talks. Thanks.

  11. So I finally got the funds for a 3 gun shotgun. I just started out and used a Winchester 1300 Defender. 7+1 pump. As I am always excessive when it comes to competition, I want to get a good semi-auto. Found a Winchester Super X 2 with an extension already on it at a local shop. I can tell it was somebody's 3-gun shotgun from the velcro patches, extension, and fiber optic sights. I'm curious if this SX2 is better or worse then the FN SLP and SX2 Practical. And also barrel length for 3 gun. Is there a maximum? I see alot of talk about 22" barrels and the SX2 Practical and FN SLP have 22" I believe. Same with capacity, being new to 3-gun. If I want to compete in either Limited or Tactical (not Open), is there a round capacity max? Preferred amount?

    Thanks for the help!

Thought I'd re Hi-Jack my thread and look for some help to questions between these shotguns. Thanks!

  13. I just broke the factory extractor on my SVI and was looking at replacements. A factory SVI runs $76, wich is almost the exact same cost as the Aftec Extractors. I was curious if the Aftec really makes a big difference and the pros and cons of going with it vs. factory since they are essentially the same price. Thanks!

  14. I've been reloading for about 3 years, but do so mostly for economy of cost. I've never reloaded precision rifle so am not super precise when it comes to OAL of each round or small variations in powder. My question for all those out there with more experience than I, how much difference does Over All Length make in terms of velocity and powder burn. I make sure all my rounds are within specs of my reloading manual, but I see threads and load recipes that specify X grains of X powder with X bullet at X Over All Length. Anyway, looking forward to learning this aspect of reloading. Thanks!

  15. I think I might start out using HKS 10-A speedloaders. I realize they aren't near as fast as the Safariland, but like I said....shooting revolver on a budget until I'm sure that I want to sink more money into it. Does anyone know of a decent holder for the HKS loaders? Thanks.

  16. I recently acquired a 4in. Taurus 82 in a trade. I have been tossing around the idea of starting to shoot revolver instead of L-10 in USPSA. This seems like the perfect opportunity to start without spending the big $ on a 625 in case I decide to revert back to L-10 and Production. The problem is I can't seem to find anything about anybody who has used a Taurus 82 in competition. I know people out there use .38 Special, does anybody use this one?

I'm having a hard time even finding a decent holster for it that isn't a concealed carry holster. Any input or advice about using this revolver, with the exception of telling me to get rid of it and buy a S&W, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
