  1. I would recommend shooting only minor loads in your revolver. I don't know of a Taurus .38 that I would expect to hold up for any length of time shooting major loads.

Is shooting Major in a revolver the "equivalent" to shooting +P loads? Not something you can do with every revolver? It's an all steel frame that is supposed to be rated fine for +P. Thanks.

  2. So when I bought my press it came with .38 spcl dies. I picked up a Taurus model 82 .38spcl revolver in a trade and wanted to work up a Major PF load for revolver (assuming major is the preferred load, not sure what most people are shooting). I use Titegroup for my 9mm loads and Clays for my .45ACP loads. I'm looking for any help on working up a load using one of these two powders I already have. I know the 625JM is the top for Revolver division, but I want to try it with what I have to ensure I like it before spending that kind of cash. I use Montana Gold FMJ for both my .45 and 9mm loads. I like their service and would like to stick with them for ordering purposes, but I'd like to hear what other .38spcl revo shooters are using for their loads. Thanks!

  4. I've been focusing alot more on dry firing in my basement. I've been using a black paster on the wall as my aiming point. I know many out there use the mini carboard metric targets for their dry fire practice. I'm curious if there is a reason to use one of those vs. a black paster, vs. something else. Does it help improve sight position in relation to an actual metric target? Thanks.

  5. While the MSRP is definitely higher than I think it should be for what it is, I purchased my M&P15T for a great price and have been nothing but thrilled with it's performance. It admittedly is not strictly a 3 gun rifle set up like a JP built rifle or even the new M&P15 VTAC rifle. It does allow me to go from a 3 gun set up to a combat rifle for training or instructional work. It seems like it is more a question of will the rifle be strictly for 3 gun, or will the time come that you take a carbine class or some other evet that would require a vertical foregrip, light, laser, bipod, or any other item with a specific purpose.

  6. I've used Peltors for both personal use at the range and for a year in Iraq. I have had great luck with both of them. They've been put through their paces involving dirt, sweat, and more rain than they ever should have seen. I've either been lucky or they are made as well as I expected them to be. I also have friends that love their MSA electronic muffs. Good Luck!

  7. In terms of active retention, the SERPA and Safarinald are probably the best. I found that by using a small drill bit you could make a hole and insert a small screw that would hold down the activation lever of a SERPA. Very easy and cheap to do, and completely reversable if you wanted to have the active retention.

  8. I bought a new safe as my post deployment present and went with the Patriot Safe Co. They are out of Merlot, CA I believe. They are by far the best I found for the money in terms of price and fire proof ratings. They also include free shipping to your door. They make everything from samller 10 gun safes to 39 gun and up. I highly reccommend them!

  9. While I can't say with 100% reliability, I think you would be fine with any DA/SA as long as you use it in DA mode only for Production. You find Beretta 92s, CZ-SP01, and varieties of Sig pistols among others that are all DA/SA and legal in production. You just have to use DA only for that first shot.

  10. I've been running into the same problem. I just ordered a recoil calibration pack from Wolff. I'm hoping that putting a lighter recoil spring in will solve the problem. If not, it's off to Springer to get the extractor replaced. I'm also loading to about 135PF and still having the issue. I'll let you know if the spring switch solves the problem.

  11. I've never dealt with Canyon Creek, but I had Springer Precision do a competition trigger job on my 5in XD, 3#, and put Dawson sight on it and it's absolutely awesome. Makes it hard to believe it started as the same gun as my XD subcompact.

  12. I would check for carbon build up between the extractor and the slide. That will cause the extractor to have less travel and not catch the shell correctly.

After my first stage with problems I did just that. stripped it down and thouroughly cleaned that area as it is was I suspected. That's why I was suprised when it happened again on the next stage. Thanks though.

  13. As stated in my thread under the factory pistols "XD9 Tactical Extractor Problems". One response I got for the cause of my failure to extracts I'm getting with my 5in XD in 9mm is that I'm shooting too light a load. 133PF with my reloads and 135PF with factory Federal 115gr. Would it be possible that replacing the recoil spring with a lighter weight might fix this problem and improve the reliability with lighter loads? Thanks.

  14. I've run into this previously, not due to a "dry" gun, but due to light loads, barely making minor. At PF 135+, I haven't encountered the problem. I've heard others say that the gun seems to like "hot" loads. My 4" was far less fussy with the extraction; the 5" certainly seems to do better at a higher power factor (slide is a bit heavier, needs more "oomph" to cycle?).

    +1 due to light loads.

Had it this weekend, on 3 out of 5 stages. It was def change in "Boom" whne they would fire and not even make the slide come back. it was not every round just whenever, 2 in a row, 1 outta 10, etc. And yes I use/love slide glide and it was lubed. Just all due to weak powder charges. I have ran my xd40 service down to 126pf with no problems(all fact springs)

I guess that would make sense. It doesn't happen on every round. Shooting Federal 115gr I'm makin about 135PF. The same loads run fine through my XD9 sub-compact. Would changing the recoil spring to a lighter weight potentially take care of this problem? I really hope because I loaded 4K 115gr MG bullets over 4.4gr titegroup and they make 133PF.

  15. I shot the Mid Atlantic Sectional this past weekend (great match and thank you staff!) shooting my XD9 in production. The first stage was a 4sec fixed time and the gun ran fine. The 2nd stage however....I had 4 failure to extracts over a 32rd stage!! I tore the gun apart, cleaned and lubed it again finding no large debris. And on the next stage had 2 more FTEs. That's when I called it quits and finished the match with my XD9 sub compact backup gun.

For every FTE, the extractor would pull the spent case out about half way and then slip off the edge. It would then of course try to load the next round and jam. Requiring me to lock the slide, remove the mag, shake the brass out, and reload. I have had this happen on rare occassion at the range but never with this kind of frequency. I was shooting 115gr Federal factory ammo. Has anyone else out there ran into this problem with their XD? I have never stripped it completely apart and am not familiar with the complete inner workings of the slide, striker, springs, etc. The extractor is not broken, chipped, or worn in any unusual way that I can see. Could it be something as simple as replacing a spring? The only custom work ever done on the gun was a 3# trigger job by Spring Precision and Dawson Adjustable sights.

Desperately hoping someone with a little more experience than myself can help out. Thanks!

  16. Does anyone know of SASS matches around the Northern Virginia area? I've been shooting USPSA since 2005 but recently picked up 2 Ruger Blackhawks in .357, a Marlin 1984 in .357, and Win 1897 clone. I've had the itch to try out a SASS match but haven't found one yet since moving here 2 months ago. It looks like a great time and I can't wait to try it out.
