  1. Hoping for help with ongoing failure to feed problem with tanfo 9mm stock II
  2. Hey guys, I have a somewhat complicated issue to explain and try fix. The gun i am having trouble with is the BUL M5 Government 9mm. The barrel has 2 ports on the end (not strictly a compensator). In shooting IPSC obviously it is considered an open class gun because of such ports. I am continually getting jams in the gun, specifically failure to feed (out of battery) and failure to extract. I have eliminated certain elements that could cause the jams and these are: 1) I DON'T limp wrist. I know it is the first thing everyone asks when dealing with jams, dont ask me because i dont limp wrist. 2) My rounds do factor through a chrono for minor power factor. 3) my brass is thoroughly checked cleaned and i plunk test all the rounds. 4) according to every gun smith i have spoken to, my magazine springs, followers, base pads etc are all good. I also make sure they are clean. 5) gun is always clean and lubricated correctly. 6) My OAL is correct for the gun and all rounds cycle smoothly. I am reloading using s121 powder (fast burning) with a 124gr bullet. I have found a possible cause of the jams. This could be loading the rounds too hot? and causing the gun to cycle too fast. I found this out by shooting my reloads vs bought reloads. the bought reloads grouped extremely well where as my reloads were all over the place. This i figured out was because of too much pressure exiting the ports on the barrel causing the gun to move too much. I went back to my reloading data and found that i factored at 4.4 gr but i was actually putting in 4.7 gr due to increasing the length. what i have done is bring the powder down to 4.3gr and i will be shooting the rounds this weekend hopefully with no jams. What my question is, is it possible that a gun can jam when running too hot a load through it? i.e. the action closing too fast therefore causing a failure to feed and the action opening too fast that the extractor, in lay mans terms, looses grip of the brass casing to extract it?
  3. I received my new 650 a couple of weeks ago and successfully loaded around 600 rounds of .357 sig without a problem. Last night I started to load a few rounds and the ram jammed on the way down. An inspection showed that the ejection shoot was lodging under the ram on the way down. It looks like the case feed block grabbed the edge of the shoot and pulled it into the path of the ram. I was able to bend it back to allow clearance, but was wondering what may have caused this or what I can do to prevent it in the future. Has anyone had a similar issue or know what may have caused this?
  4. Dear Open division folks, I'm fairly new to Open division shooting and mostly shoot IPSC Production. I'm left handed and eyed. This thread will be organized by questions followed by my comments and observations: 1. What is more important for controlling recoil on an Open gun - grip tape or a thumbrest? I ask because I have a Bul M5 9x19 Open gun (shown in the photo below), and the first time I applied grip tape, it interfered with my ability to deactivate the grip safety, which has a very low profile, so I took the tape off. I expected the red dot to jump around a bit when firing, and was not disappointed, although sight recovery is very fast. Should grip safety deactivation be standard operating procedure for competition only 1911s? Should I make a bump on the bottom of the grip safety for more consistent activation, and how far away from the grip safety should any grip tape end? 2. Are thumbrests and thumb indexing mutually exclusive? When I use a thumbrest on my Open gun, which is currently installed on the right side mount, above the front trigger guard and level with the bottom of the slide, my support thumb is above horizontal when pointing the gun. In Production division I am accustomed to pointing the thumb at the target and this does not longer work, unless I visualize differently. I still find dot acquisition to be time consuming, especially after large traverses if my strong wrist moves. Tips on rapid dot acquisition are also welcome. 3. Should left handed folks be using thumbrests in the first place? Especially for minor power factor? Oftentimes, if I have to take my support hand off the gun during a stage and reestablish a two handed grip later, I find my thumb holding the thumbrest too close to the gun, resulting in a failure to eject as a spent case is retarded by my thumb and the slide goes on vacation until I realize what is going on. 4. Should I train Open if I compete Production? I find that shooting is more fun and smoother using an Open gun, but then so does everyone else. Should I compete the same way as I train, or should I concentrate on using one gun? Nowadays I train about 100 rounds a week in a single session. There's more to the sport than sight pictures. I also carry my Production gun concealed on occasion. Any responses and tips from people who have been there and done that already would be welcome. Thanks - Lior.
  5. Hello, and thanks in advance for your time. I'm reloading 9mm Luger on an older 550B, although the dies are brand new. I'm an experienced loader although new to 9mm. My issue is bulging at the case base. It doesn't happen consistently, but I would say 1 every 75 rounds. I'm loading 124gr jacketed with around 8.0grains of HS-6 and CCI small rifle primers. It's a pretty hot load, but I'm shooting 9mm Major through an STI Matchmaster. The bulges are barely visible but they are causing the gun to not go into battery, leaving the slide about 1/8 of an inch away from locking up. The jam is then very difficult to free as the cartridge is really wedged in the barrel. My OAL on the cartridge is in line with published data, and like I said, 98% of cartridges are fine and no issues with feeding. I've played around with the crimp and it seems to be well adjusted, same comment as previous, 98% of rounds are perfect. It just seems bizarre that it's only happening about once every 75 rounds. I'm chamber checking everything, which I do for match rounds anyway but I'm shooting 800-1000 a week so that's a pain! Again, thanks and fingers crossed you can help me!
