Question on removing rust from a blued barrel

Recommended Posts

I was checking out my blued varmint barrel the other day and it had what appeared to be dust or dark dirt on it. I keep the barrel coated with oil to prevent rusting plus the humidity in my area is typically low. I wiped the barrel down and applied more oil. In outdoor or indoor light the finish looks fine.

Later on I happened to shine my high intensity spot light on the barrel and with that light it looks like the barrel has rust all over it???

I don't know what happenend but since I can't see it normal light maybe I should just leave it alone.

What if I tried polishing the barrel with Flitz or some other product?

Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated...

Regards...

Oil and green Scotchbrite used in the kitchen for scrubbing pots works good. Make sure you're using oil and not WD40.

WD40 evaporates after a while, leaving a dry varnish that attracts and holds moisture, causing a lot of rust.
