Do what we used to do all the time: buy the flight from Nashville and chuck the stub for the Memphis-Nashville leg. On the way back home, ask them to check your luggage only to Nashville, because you "have a meeting."

The airlines may have put the kibosh on this gambit since. For some stupid reason it was always cheaper to fly from Seattle through Portland than just from Portland to anywhere, so that's what we did - and it saved us hundreds every trip.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, welcome to Cincinnati, Ohio... the last time I checked it was the SECOND highest place in the Country to fly to/from because Delta owns something like 96% of the takeoffs and landings.

Great examples.... Cincy to Knoxville RT $970...... Cincy/Kansas City/Milwaukee/Cincy $1018....... Cincy/Portland/Bend $679 (with months advance notice).

The best example I have seen recently was Cincy/Omaha RT at around $1350. There were three of us making this trip so we diligently searched nearby airports, and found that we could fly to Omaha for something like $225 each out of Indianapolis. We drove to the Cincinnati airport... dropped our cars.... picked up a rental car and drove to Indianapolis (2 hours)..... dropped off the rental... FLEW back to Cincinnati.... only to connect to the SAME D*MN DELTA FLIGHT that there were going to screw us with the $1300/ea fare out of Cincy. Of course on the return, we 'missed' our Cincinnati connection back to Indianapolis, so we had to just get in our cars and drive home. :D In other words, all THREE of us fly the route we needed on the same flight from Cincinnati at approximately HALF of what they would have charged for ONE of us leaving from here.
