BigDave
I was wanting to know what a gunsmith does with the machines in his shop? This is what I can think of right now. Mill - sight cuts, lightning cuts, cocking serrations, drilling, taping Lathe - no clue, maybe barrel work? Grinder - as the name implies Just curious... L9X25
The lathe is where steel bar is turned into a comp blank, cone tapered (if applicable), drilled for the bore and threaded. A mill usually cuts the ports out unless they do some of it on a lathe, with EDM, or some other method. Barrel cutting and threading occurs on a lathe as well. Frames are machined on the mill to install ramped barrels too. As you mentioned, the lightening cuts on the slide are usually performed on a mill as well. Carlos
Machine tools used in gunsmithing? You will love the Roderus Custom Gunsmiths site: http://www.roderuscustom.tzo.com Look for the 1911 gunsmith "Blindhog" and follow to his homesite - very informative.
