Pd Rule Question

In USPSA Production Division, is the use of grip tape on the slide legal?

Specifically, small pieces placed on the sides where forward cocking serrations would

normally be located.

What about under the beavertail where the web of the hand rests?

In IPSC Production Division this is considered an external mod.

Is it also illegal in USPSA?

Grip tape on the frame? Fine, not a problem.

Grip tape on the slide? Email John Amidon, he's the answer man.

(I'd say no, there are no serrations there and adding them would be an external mod, so grip tape wouldn't fly either. Then again, what do I know?)

I would concur.

I'm not going to make a call here due to the turmoil it can lead to but I will ask; How well will you be able to draw the gun out of your holster with grip tape at those locations?

The slide is a Baby Eagle which has a trapazoid shape. The sides are tapered to the top

making it difficult to grasp. Tape in this area does not contact the holster.

The beavertail is a Glock question. A piece of grip tape on the underside aft section positions the hand just a little lower and keeps the slide from biting the web.

Both of these "mods" work quite well.

Don't know if they are legal.

Cut and paste from the rule book:

"21.6 Aftermarket grips which match the profile of the OFM standard for

the approved handgun and/or the application of grip tape or rubber

sleeves is permitted. Modifications to grips, other than previously

mentioned, not allowed, such as grooves cut to reach mag release

or size reduction."

I electronically did a search of the rule book under Grip Tape. Two hits came up. This one under USPSA and one in IPSC. Nothing mentioned as far as the slide goes, just the grip that I could find.

I actually emailed John about this question (grip tape on the slide in production) for my LDA in 9mm under USPSA rules. No it is not allowed.

I figure the same for any other gun.

Vince

Thanks, Sargenv. That settles that on the slide.

Rule 21.6 quoted above doesn't seem to address anything but the grips, or does

this rule also include the beavertail area?

If you are talking about the underside of the beavertail, IMO that is part of the grip. If you are talking the top of the beavertail, then IMO it is not. I believe the grip includes the sides, frontstrap and backstrap of the gun. The areas your hand would normally contact. The only part that I believe wouldn't be considered the grip that your hand contacts would be the trigger guard, and frame forward of the "grips"
