alzo
Do any of you have chrono data for N340 loads you've tried with 230gr JHP bullets ?
medic21
I have loaded-up some VV 340 and VV 320 in 230 JHP. I'm waiting for the snow to stop and the range to get get plowed-out. As soon as I get results I'll post both chrono and accuracy.
Mad Dog Racing
Bought Hornady 230g XTP's and Viht N340. Am going to load some bulleye rounds at 800 and 850 FPS, will let you know the results.
alzo
I've loaded some Zero 230gr JHP's with 5.9, 6.0, 6.1, and 6.2 grains of N340. It's going to be a while before I can get out to chronograph them.
medic21
Got to the range today, nasty cold wind. Recipe: Les Baer TRS 5" barrel, CCI 300, once-fired cases, OAL~1.260, crimp 0.470, VV340, 230 FMJ, ambient temp 28F, no s/s of over pressure. Use at your own risk. I do question 6.1 & 6.2 & will re-load them & chrono again. None come close to VV reload booklet specs Load high low average ES SD Accuracy 6.0 721 649 682 72 26 6.1 779 635 710 144 51 6.2 728 673 695 55 18 best 6.3 740 684 722 56 17 best 6.4 819 732 771 87
alzo
I made it out to the range today (35 deg F). I loaded a spread of loads using Zero 45acp 230gr JHP, COL=1.215", Winchester LP primers, N340 powder: 5.9gr Mean=792fps, ES=92.2, SD=29.0 6.0gr Mean=812fps, ES=75.8, SD=24.5 6.1gr Mean=807fps, ES=56.5, SD=19.4 6.2gr Mean=847fps, ES=64.3, SD=16.8 I think the 6.1 grain result is an anomaly. I sorted by headstamp this time and the 6.1gr load was almost all Remington brass. I noticed that I got lower velocities across the board with the Remington brass for some reason. If I look at just the Federal brass for the 6.1gr load, the mean is about 823, which makes more sense. These were fired from a 5" Wilson CQB with the chrono 10ft from the muzzle. Medic: FYI in the past, using 230gr Berry's Plated RN at 1.26" I got 823fps with a charge of 6.3gr of N340.
BroncoGlenn
Those are still some pretty substantial spreads on your loads. I've been using some loads of 230gr. over 5.0gr of N320 and have singe digit SDs for the two loads I've used them in: 230gr. FMJ, 5.0 gr N320, Hi: 837 Lo: 818 Es: 19 Av: 826 SD: 7 230gr. copper plated, 5.0gr N320 Hi: 813 Lo: 794 Es: 19 Av 805 SD: 8 Both data sets are based on 7 shot averages from mixed headstamps. Measured with an Oehler 35 chronograph. Fired from S&W PC1911 and ignited by WLP primers. Which brings me to another cross-road--your primers. You might want to try experimenting with other brands. Primers can have one of the largest significant roles in consistent velocity, all else being equal. I've always been happy with Winchester's in both pistol and rifle. medic21
Got out to the range again today while the sun was shining and no snow falling. I changed the recipe slightly from my earlier post: still VV340, 5" 1911, CCI 300; but OAL now 1.225 & 230 MG JHP Load high low average ES SD 6.1 725 678 696 47 17 6.2 741 688 719 53 19 6.5 826 713 780 113 43 6.6 837 783 814 54 20 6.7 843 787 818 56 25 Best load was 6.7. At 10 yds (with a rest) 5 rounds were within a 50-cent piece. Use at your own risk.
alzo
My means are based on samples of 20 shots. I use Winchester primers as well. I'll have to work on my reloading technique to see if I can bring the SD's down some.
